IMHO, I am in different on the "Good Ole Days"
What was so good about the good old days, what is better today?
The comedy of "Ignorance is Bliss".
For me the "Good Ole Days" were - leaving your front door unlocked, and not worrying about home invasions. Coming home and nothing has moved or stolen. Leaving the keys in the ignition of your car, coming out to find it still there.
I remember riding my motorcycle to deliver my newspapers in my area, before I had a license. And not worry about harrassment ...
Violence was not common. News consisted of who married whom. fairs in the area. Harvest parties. but then there was Apollo Program, Cuba, Three Mile Island, & Chernobyl to name a few other things on the news.
What is better today? Medicine! AIDS \ HIV \ Cancer not a guaranteed death sentence. The advancement of Technology and Science.
There will be an implosion on the science end for the next 5 to 10 years, so there will be constant need for new Scientists in physics at least.

We definitively had some break throughs in medicine and I'm very glad that more lives can be saved now> I hear you thought about leaving the door open! Also leaving the washing outside and when it started to rain the neighbor will come and bring it in.
The good old days were good, better, safer, kinder.
I remember the first car in our street! and the first fridge! And the first computer lol, it was a room!

I remember those days too, the first computer at home - it was a big thing! I'm glad for the technical innovations we have these days so we all can connect.
I hope some things will go back to how it was what concerns safety and kindness, people seem to be under too much pressure these days.

Were the good old days really that good? Well yes and no. When I was a kid everything seemed simpler because my parents shielded me mostly from the rough edges of life.
We used to have a party line phone which means other people were sometimes talking to someone else when you picked up the phone. We have come a long way in phone technology.
What was so good about the good old days, what is better today?
What I think was good about decades ago were the ethical values that were more predominant at that time. And people worked together more in government. There is more partisanship now.

I can relate to what you said soul. In modern times life is easier what concerns technology and comfort but on a mental/emotional level it's harder, there is much more pressure on people.

I do find the microwave oven very handy though...

Were the good old days really that good?
Well, the "good old days" is not a universal trope. Some languages do not have a similar locution. Very often, the people who use that expression are not happy with lifestyle changes (technology, new words and expressions used by the young, maybe too many loved ones who are now dead, prices that go up and seldom down, etc.). They look at what they lost rather than what they gained.
What was so good about the good old days, what is better today?
I would venture to say that that certain new health/safety laws do impact your personal freedom and purse. But I feel we have certainly gained a lot culturally and technologically speaking. Some things that USED to be expensive are now practically free (travel and communications). My life was saved a number of times due to medical progress and I would not be here otherwise to tell you. :D

You mentioned some very good points Fradiga! We can't see the now as good when we focus on what we have lost rather than what we have gained! Topics which were very difficult to discuss in the past are discussed much more openly these days (example gender issues).
I'm very glad that the progress in medicine made it possible that you are here!
I remember in the early 70s my grandmother walking us to town to shop, she had a cart that old ladies always had, it would have items purchased in it, she would walk to another store and leave the cart ouside on the sidewalk with all the others while we shopped and it and everything in it would still be there.

It's still the case where I live (the boondocks in France - farming/hunting/fishing activities). I do not lock my house until I am going to bed (it's mostly symbolic anyway). I leave the key in its slot in the car. My (new) dog runs free. My bicycle does not need any security. We help strangers out of our property because they are probably lost.
At the open-air market, the mutual trust is even higher: "Pay me next week, the CC is not working today", "Don't forget your purchase!", "Sure, I'll watch your dog for a moment", bicycles and other expensive belongings everywhere, stands where the owner is gone to do his own shopping, and don't get me started with Ama$on parcels left at your door or behind it since it's not locked, of course.
Life is hard in the countryside and a lot of us are quite isolated. It would feel that too much safety would be.... unsafe. It's also a comparison between the POSSIBILITY that something terrible could happen to your person or your belongings and the PROBABILITY that your daily life is made easier when you trust people.
