50's Plus Check in thread July 21st to July 29th

User Profile: DaveMcGrath
DaveMcGrath July 21st, 2018

How's it going?

Everyone getting excited about the proposed 50+ subcommunity? I think there are a lot of possibilites that can be explored with such an idea. More importantly, how does it make you feel?

Further, anything interesting going on in your neck of the woods?

Not much here, teaching extra classes to cover all the ones I'll miss when on holiday.

Even if you don't post, no matter, just know we are excited you are here, drop by one of the other threads to let us get to know you.

@DaveMcGrath well I am excited about having a 50+ community to discuss the issues near and dear to me. I can remember 50 years old okay, but 35 years old was like a different lifetime. Teenage years was another lifetime. I heard there are phases in your life and having people in the phase you are in can help with empathy and just knowing things the other person in going through.

@soulsings

I like how you used the word phase because that is what I heard earlier this week from others also. It is amazing the different phases that we have and some of the friends in each phases and which friends we still have from some of those phases.

@DanaMH

It's wonderful to have still friends from your "young" phases, I am lucky, I am still in contact with 2 people I know from school (best friends), unfortunately they are in a different country. I find it much harder to get new friends after a certain age, sure after hitting the 50s.

@amiablePeace77

Yes, I like some of my friends that I have now had for 31 years which is amazing and I agree it is harder to make friends when you get older maybe because they all have a lot going on but maybe because we have a broad range of interest also.

User Profile: soulsings
soulsings July 25th, 2018

@amiablePeace77 yes making friends can be more of a challenge. To me that is one role that this area can help us with.

@soulsings I relate to everyones comments about how having/getting/keeping friends as you age. For me my life changed so drastically that I've lost touch with the friends I had in my 30's and 40's. And the last 6 years of my 50's have been a whirlwind of even more changes. I became so busy I didnt have/make time for riends. And the social media sites that have become so popular are overwhelming and a little uncomfortable to me. I dont understand how these younger people have time to take picutes of everything they think, say and do, and post them on all these sites. Or why they would want to? I do have one real friend that has weathered the crazy storms of my life for the last 15 years and I treasure that relationship. Thank you for letting me share!

We are wiser, calmer, and often happier than we were, aren't we? Maybe because we worry less and less about what people think? I didn't expect that to happen when I was younger! I think the 50+ is going to be a lovely community. We won't desert the 35+ though, if you will have us, it is nice to mingle, right?

Dana, I'm filling the form :-)

I am so glad this is happening. Im struggling with having a good attitude about getting older and how different I look and feel. I know this is a big part of my depression. I truly want to age with grace and I hope connecting with others who have seen more of life will encourage me to have a more positive attitude...and maybe I might be a little bit of an encouragement too.

In my neck of the woods...I am prematurely retired due to emotional overload. I am working on "reinventing" myself. Learning quilting and trying to find out what I am supposed to do with the rest of my life...write a book, teach some worldview classes, develop some business ideas. I have not been able to make choices about what to do with my time for 33 years so this is kind of daunting and a little scary.

Looking forward to visiting here later today and read some other folks posts. Thanks to Dave and 7 Cups for giving this a go!

@estompe55

I agree once we get older it is harder to figure out what to do with our time. Learning quilting and the other ideas that you are thinking of sound like really great ideas. If you also like to play games my therapist mentioned to me about Meetup and the Sr Center is always trying to find folks to play games with others. I also started helping out at the food bank if you are interested in volunteering I am sure there are lots of things in your area that also need help.

@estompe55

Hi estompe, first of all I like to say that I am happy that you connect with us, you are very welcome here. Stepping out of a busy life into a quite one takes a lot of courage and is definitively not easy in my opinion, it requires a lot of adjustment or "reinventment" as you said. When retiring (for whatever reason) things change, a lot of us have to define a new "me", but it can become a wonderful journey, not been driven anymore by what we have to do (at least to a great extend) but what we can and to a good deal what we want to do.
