I would remind them of their great achievements in the past and about their kind heart. I would tell them one bad day isn't the end of the world. That they deserve to taste the fruit of success and hardwork.

It really depends on the situation. Encouraging a child to jump down a high step when it is safe?

Has that friend asked you to motivate them? Let's be careful about giving unwanted advice. You can say you understand and ask if you can help, maybe point to the fact that once they do that thing, it will be behind them. 

I have trouble with the "because they do not believe in themselves". To me, this expression is rather vague.

Imagine you would have to motivate a friend to do something they feel they can't because they do not believe in themselves. What would you say?

This is tough because my therapist often asks me this. What would I tell someone else who was struggling the way I am? It’s so easy to give advice when you feel good and feel like you have all the answers. It’s impossible to tell yourself those same things when things aren’t going well.

Imagine you would have to motivate a friend to do something they feel they can't because they do not believe in themselves. What would you say?

I wouldn’t say anything. I’d motivate and inspire them by letting them see me in action believing that seeing is believing and actions speak louder than words. When they see me they’ll eventually be inspired to believe in themselves enough to try whatever they didn’t believe they could succeed in before. 

But if my friend and I did have a conversation about this subject, I’d tell them to repeatedly tell themselves yes they can and will do it till they believe in themselves enough to do it
