Every year on August 1, the world observes World Lung Cancer Day, a global campaign to increase knowledge of lung cancer, its effects, and the value of early identification, prevention, and cutting-edge treatments.
There are different causes of lung cancer, but smoking seems to be the major one.
Quitting smoking is a significant health decision that can lead to numerous benefits, including reduced risks of heart disease, respiratory issues, and various cancers.

There are so many illnesses that turn up without you having done something consciously.
Lung cancer is preventable. Stop smoking. You owe it to yourself. Give yourself the love you deserve. 💛
I think risks of smoking cigarettes are pretty well know. Vaping and smoking marijuana seems to be less discussed.
There's also radon, we ended up testing our basement when someone was doing it for free. It was ok, but we spend a fair bit of time for an almost undeveloped basement, there's a little gym area, I start my seedlings down there, he has his hobby and gaming computer down there. He decided to buy his own detector, paid attention to when it went up and put a removable seal over the sump pump which dropped the radon levels by quite a bit.
We also bought a few air purifiers as we've had multiple summers where the wildfire smoke really affected me. I'm no longer confined to one room when it's bad. Hopefully that decreases our risk even when we do have to be outside on poor air quality days.

I also think that there is plenty of information out there regarding the risks of smoking.
The obvious answer is to tell them to stop before they are full blown addicted to smoking.
I never had anyone around me back in the early '80's tell me to stop smoking. I went from the age of 13 to almost 30, when I was going for a physical to get life insurance. When I was presented with the monthly payments between a smoker and non smoker, that's when I chose to stop smoking.

I think it is helpful to remember that being young is all about learning. And so being young is all about curiosity and trying new things. So, we should expect young people to experiment with drugs.
So I think it is important to teach about risk. All drugs have side effects, no drug is 100% safe. Teaching children how to weigh up whether the benefit outweighs the risk, allows them to understand what they are doing when they try things and see through advertising.
I'm not sure many young people really know why they are doing a particular drug or considering it.
Its easy to put reasons like, it's a habit, or, my friends are all doing it, or, it's fun but perhaps seeing the deeper things, like the need to take drugs for emotional regulation because emotional regulation hasn't been taught, or the fear of rejection from friends from not joining in, can help them understand not only why they might be doing it, but also, what better alternatives there might be out there, such as learning emotional regulation or confronting fears.

Clio, you raised some excellent points. Teaching children about the dangers, how to deal with peer pressure, and—above all—how to control their emotions will, in my opinion, improve their prospects for the future.
