Got a Hobbie?

User Profile: crystaldawn76
crystaldawn76 March 15th

I used to have many hobbies that I would partake in. I love to paint, so, right poetry, read, I did scrapbooking, I love to take pictures, I enjoy singing karaoke, and I also like to bake.

Lately I have been in a bit of a funk and have not really felt like doing any of those things. I was just wondering if anyone else gets into these funks and when they do how do you get out of them?

Also, do you have a favorite past time/ hobby that you love to do? I would love to hear about it!

@Amanda84 football! That's really cool. I have never been one much for sports. When I was younger I played volleyball with friends at school and sometimes at their house on weekends. I like to dance but have not done that in a very long time. I don't listen to music nearly as often as I should. Thank you for sharing!

Reading, listening to music, walking and sports.

I did actually dig out my electric bass guitar and amp from a cupboard yesterday, it bad been a while, I haven't improved any 🤪🤪 Dud I enjoy it, a little but equally get frustrated by it 😕

@RunningMachine I need to start going for walks, being out in the sunshine is good and I could use a bit of a health Improvement. I have never really played an instrument, I used to have a keyboard but I never learned to read music, I played by ear.

After my pulmonary embolisms when my lungs were still full of blood clots  I started by just going for really short walks, literally just to the end of the road and back every hour, gradually increasing distances over the first couple of weeks until I could walk at a comfortable pace. With my history I need to do some movement every 90-120 minutes engages my calf muscles to force return of the blood through my veins. After a couple of weeks I returned to the gym and built in simply low intensity walks with some days being am outdoor walk for a change. Most afternoons especially when I'm mut working overnight intend to go for a 3-6 mile walk, podcasts, music, audiobooks or occasionally without.

I'd just suggest maybe staring with just short regular walks and building up gradually, it will help you get accustomed to it and your ligaments and tendons will strengthen.

I learnt bass via a cycling friend who played lead in a Dire Straits Tribute band, strictly for fun and just a few local pubs and clubs. When there bassist left I stood in for a few gigs but was delighted when I was relaxed. The band follows the bassist, for timing, I was a disaster 😁😁😁 I learnt to read music eventually but I really struggle with concentrating on both hands at the same time so any other than a really boring repetitive bass tab quickly overwhelms me 😕😕

The guitar sits in the cupboard mostly as I get frustrated with it, but occasionally I'll have a tinker with really easy ones 🤪🤪

@RunningMachine Thats amazing that you have been able to build up your strength a d resilience. I used to walk 6 km a day. I had a big dog and he was very good incentive for going for walks. Long walks..lol

I helped all sorts of people as a cycling coach, helping them set SMART measureable goala was vital, considered there fitness level, lifestyle, time available and their desire. Sometimes it was just about enjoying a club run, slow paced group ride and not struggling to be dropped off the back and was fortunate to work with some very promising junior riders that showed amazing potential but unfortunately didn't always stick with it.

When's your first walk, if you have a smart watch, or activity tracker maybe keel an eye on your heart rate and manage your pace from there.

@RunningMachine I don't know when my first walk will be. When the weather warms up most likely.

It's wonderful that you were able to help so many people.

@crystaldawn76  Yes I've experienced the same feelings many times. I find that what helps is to not force the feeling away, more so let it be how it is. Kind of like being bored you sit with it until it passes. BUT if you're not wanting to do that I suggest trying something you haven't done before, can find activities on Google like things to make out of paper, cardboard, beads, yarn, scraps of scrapbook paper ect.

@tealLion9329  That is very good advice, thank you. I have been sitting it with it for a while and I really believe that I have the winter Blues. I think once the weather starts to get warmer and I am able to get outside things will get better. I have also been quite sick this winter off and on. Hopefully when spring comes I will be healthier and feeling more energized. Thank you for sharing!

@crystaldawn76

I also wrote storys, poems and essays when I was younger 😍😍. Now my hobbies are graphic designing and recording audiobooks.🐶🐶

Last time I got stuck or in a funk, it was because I was overwhelmed. Either from too much work, or from not doing anything artistic or creative for a long time

( Warning: free advice ahead)

You could try taking a break from life...maybe a walk in a park or venting to someone, or eating you favourite food. Incase it's because you haven't done anything artistic for a while, you could be feeling guilty. You may take baby step and be proud. Paste a sticker on the cover of a book . Any sticker, any book. The main thing is to be PROUD. Realise that this was difficult step given you were feeling in a funk and you did NOT feel like doing this . Be as proud as if you conquered the world. That should tap in some intrinsic motivation. If that doesn't work, you can try the cookie jar method for motivation u can google it.

I wrote a paragraph lmao🥺🥺 I hope you getunstuck soon ♥️♥️

@gregariousSquare298

This is a good reminder.

At my age sticking a sticker on a book sounds frivolous. But, you are so right, when we are in a funk, it's an achievement that should be celebrated. Today I'm going to do the equivalent of multiple stickers on many books and be proud of all of them.

@gregariousSquare298 that's wonderful that you wrote when you were younger. Did you ever do anything with your writings? I have been debating getting a book published but have been too chicken to do it yet LOL thank you for the wonderful advice I will check into the jar method. I don't mind that you wrote a paragraph, I appreciate you getting back to me!

@PurpleTulip07 My mother used to crochet and knit but this is something that I have never learned to do. My hands are bad now, so I do not think I would be able to do it now. My grandmother tried to teach me to knit when I was very young. She got me to knit on the first row several times. Every time she would pull it out and get me to do it again. She said that the first row was the most important. After 10 or so times of her doing this and not showing me how to knit the second row I got frustrated and gave up LOL

I relate completely because I'm in a funk right now. I hatched a bunch of chicks this weekend. So cute. But I catch myself wondering why im bothering. All hobbies seem so pointless. I too used to do lots of creative things, but cab rarely find the interest.

A few things help me. Allowing myself to have "cry days". Although normally for me is a "cry couple of hours". Just allowing myself to be miserable and lazy for a bit and then ill suddenly have an idea of something I want to do.

Having something to eat. I definitely find it harder to be positive if I'm hungry. Sometimes I ignore meal conventions and eat a meal when I need to eat a meal. It improves my mood and reduces snacking.

A support group that does crafty things. A fabulous idea I found largely by chance. I first went to just listen and  didn't feel like joining in at first, but then, one day I just did.

@Clio9876 I think having baby chicks is a wonderful Hobby! They are so cute. I like chickens, someday I would like to have some laying hens. Yes I understand what you are saying, sometimes we just need to allow ourselves to go through what we are going through. I am glad that you found a group and I hope that it is working well for you. I need to find something like that to do, I do not have many friends and it would be nice to interact with other people.

@crystaldawn76

Even though I haven’t seen you in person, I’m sure that for you this is just a short period of a funk and you’ll overcome it easily.💪

You mentioned whether we could stop practicing the hobby… From my point of view, a hobby is not just time we spend doing something we feel forced to do. No… a hobby is a place to recharge your soul, bring happiness to yourself, and take time to relax. Especially if you share this hobby with someone—like drawing or writing—and allow someone to participate, give their opinion, and if it’s clear that they admire it or praise it, it really acts as a form of soul recharging.

So please, continue and share with us. Let us enjoy your writings, drawings, or whatever you want to share with us🙏🙏☺️

@friendlyLight1447 thank you very much for your kind words, it is truly appreciated. I agree that a hobby is not to be forced it is something that we enjoy and love. I am really thinking about publishing a book of my poetry, it will probably be something that I will start once the warmer weather comes and I can get outside. I think I will feel better when the weather is nicer.

Music and walking are my biggest hobbies and when I don't walk for a few days it really affects me.

Gardening, can't wait for spring, tidy up the winter mess. I have already started my peppers in doors. Hope that my garlic survived the animals and winter.

@QuietByNature I really need to start going for walks as soon as the nice weather starts. My biggest reason for not walking is that I do not like the area that I live in. I used to live where I could go for walks in nature paths and it was quiet. I guess you could say that I got a little spoiled. It's not as nice walking in rural areas. I want to extend my garden this year. I love having a vegetable garden. However I will need to put a net or something over it because last year the deer ate my beans lol
