“ Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.” —Albert Einstein

Each year the International Day of Peace (IDP) is observed around the world on 21 September.

  • What comes to your mind when you hear the word peace?
  • What do we need to achieve peace in the world in your opinion and where could we start best?

  • What comes to your mind when you hear the word peace? I think of a still calm lake.
  • What do we need to achieve peace in the world in your opinion and where could we start best? I think we need to focus more on what we can do to help others because they are suffering as much as we are.

Helping others helps ourselves too. Only a true chain of support worldwide will help in my view, let's all be a link of it.

Peace is an end to all war, fighting and unrest.

To achieve peace, everybody would have to be happy and satisfied with the way things are.

@WharfRat I agree. To me the first step in that is to look in my own mind and find a way to negotiate peacefully the black and white thinking that leads to wars.

Does that make sense to start where we can make a change?

Peace can happen with a less polarized world 🌎. It starts with simple kindness and acceptance of all.

Thank you for this wonderful post!!

When it comes to the word Peace, what comes to mind and where should we start.

As @WorkingitThrough2 stated, in ourselves and in our realm of responsibly. That is mind blowingly simply and most effective.

But what is peace?

In my opinion, the antonym of Peace is War. That being said, most common causes of War are Religious and Political based

So to have peace what is needed to stop War?

More compassion for the Value of Life. The meaning, the comprehension with wisdom of “To Live”.

Good point about compassion! People who are kind and compassionate are more satisfied with their lives, have better physical and mental health, and have stronger relationships so at the end the whole world benefits!

Einstein was a brilliant mind but if he really said that, he was being naive. I'm a bit suspicious here as Einstein is one of the most frequent people used for fake quotes, which spread across the Net at great speed...

When I hear the word "peace", the first words that come to mind are "utopia" & "brief".

As for what it would take to have world peace, the following would be required:

  • A single world government to rule all the nations. This government would have to possess so much power that no one would dare to question, let alone oppose, any policy enacted by it.
  • This one-world government would have to be an oligarchy or elite committee of some kind. It would not be a democracy for reasons of scale, among other factors. Though it would not be a democracy people would, in all likelihood, call it a democracy.
  • A permanent ban on any & all small arms not in the hands of military or LEOs (law enforcement officers). In fact there would have to be a strict rule forbidding civilian possession of anything possibly dangerous including but not limited to all kitchen knives, flathead screwdrivers, & any sewing needle longer than maybe 1.5 inches. A lot of hand & power tools would have to be strictly limited to those who use them professionally...until technological advancement makes such tools obsolete.
  • No prisons as we know them. The justice system would have to consist exclusively of facilities for therapeutic treatment (including brain surgery, if necessary) & quick execution of those who don't respond to any treatment &/or are not interested in reintegrating into society. All sentences would have to be carried out in a speedy, efficient fashion with no appeals permitted so as to not build up a backlog of cases. Whatever form of justice this system would have, it certainly would not be the current adversarial model (prosecutor vs. defense in a court under a single judge).
  • Communal raising of children, as opposed to the old two-parent model or raising by a single parent. Letting kids be raised at home would allow for too much possibility of chaos or unrest down the line.
  • A single curriculum for all education, but it wouldn't be a simple one. It would be in every school in every village, town & city in the world. Such a curriculum would be as much for raising children to become proper citizens as for educating them. It would also be for sorting the brighter pupils from the average & fitting them for leadership roles; most likely, they would learn some critical thinking skills--but not too much. The values of a permanently peaceful world would have to be beyond question, of course.
  • No privacy. Not even in bathrooms or bedrooms.
  • No freedom of speech or of conscience. No holding of or publicly espousing any belief contrary to the world government of peace could be permitted, lest opposition & strife be stirred up.
  • The world government would be the sole authority; therefore any criticism of its policy or decrees could easily be declared illegitimate & thus rightfully eliminated...by peaceful means, of course.

The above is not a conclusive list.

It would be a permanently peaceful world. There would be no wars, no strife, quite possibly no violent crime anywhere. The question is: would you want to live in such a world?

@slowdecline48

Thank you for sharing these points. As to your question

Would you want to live in such a world? I would say no. Freedom, for example freedom of speech (even if more in some countries and less in other atm (which needs to be worked on) is one of the most precious things we have. I prefer flexibility to rigidity.

@amiablePeace77 If it's any consolation, even if such a world emerges in the future, it would not be permanent...

War is indeed horrific; it has been criticized an awful lot & rightly so. But it does teach useful lessons, though perhaps these lessons could be gained at less cost: it reminds us of honest differences between segments of humanity & that not every difference can be solved by civil discussion (if only that weren't so!); it demands a certain level of honesty (the government may lie to the people in certain instances but not to itself, if it wants victory); most of all, war demands that we be clear about our motives. If a nation is going to break the peace then it had better have a d*** good reason for doing so. This is more true now than it ever was, since in democratic republics governments have to account for their activities. If the people are not satisfied with the rationale, then they will put pressure on the government to abandon the effort. That's what happened in the Vietnam War, after all. Some say that happened with our occupation of Afghanistan, also.

We all want peace. I do too. The problem with peace is that if it lasts long enough it can lull us to sleep, so to speak. War is one of the worst tragedies devised by mankind. Avoiding tragedy requires a feel for it, which in turn requires a sense of history (one reason why I read it). Because peace is pleasant, it leads to a preoccupation with presentness & thus to a loss of the past & a disregard for the future. This is because peace is pleasant, & pleasure is about momentary satisfaction. A long period of peace would raise up leaders with no tragic historical memory, so they wouldn't have much wisdom. Such shallow leaders would, due to their lack of wisdom & experience, eventually commit the kind of blunder that would lead to a general war of some kind. After the Napoleonic Wars, several decades of peace in Europe (except for the Franco-Prussian conflict) led to rulers who lacked that tragic sense of the past--which caused them to stumble right into WW1.

At this point I've probably said too much 😄

Feeling safe and accepted

What do we need to achieve peace in the world in your opinion and where could we start best?

We need to defend Palestine. When we take the side of truth, we gain our humanity.
