The difference between being single and in a relationship
As we grow older, we may find ourselves either single because our spouse has died or divorced or currently in a relationship with someone else or alone. If our spouses die or we are divorced, we then choose whether to remain single or go into another relationship when the time is right. The question we have is which is better: being single or being in a relationship.
Once we lose a spouse to death or get divorced, it is hard to decide what we want at that moment in life. If a spouse passes away, we are dealing with their death as we see fit. If we divorce, we are maybe afraid to go into a relationship soon after because we need time to find ourselves again. We need time to heal from what we have been through.
When we are single, we are free to do whatever we want; we have no one to answer to, whereas if we are dating, we are somewhat held down to answering to someone. It really depends on who and what you are looking for. In a divorce case, some are not ready to jump into dating because of abuse in the marriage and cheating spouses. A person may need time to heal from the situation before diving into another relationship for fear of a repeated relationship they just came out of.
There is something called the 3-6-9 rule to dating. Here are the explanations:
1-3 months: This is known as the honeymoon stage and chemistry. Everything will feel exciting and effortless. You begin to if there is chemistry, if there are any arguments, or if there are any flaws in the other person.
4-6 months: This is where the glasses come off and everything comes into a better picture of you and the other person. You begin to notice certain patterns, behavior issues, and negative stressors in life.
7-9 months of decision-making: This is the period where you begin to see if a relationship will work out. You see if a relationship is worth going forward. You both will decide if it's worth the shot to date or go your separate ways.

Anyone can find love, young or old. I believe there are several people meant for each of us but I also believe not all of us will find them.
I've always been single so it's not a catastrophe. It's a culmination of life's events. I like my independence and space and am very glad not to have settled for less than I deserve.
Whatever your situation is, you can always find happiness in it :)
I strongly believe love does not depend on age, gender, race, etc. However, it depends on how much we are open to it, open to being vulnerable.

I think being completely honest with ourselves with what we've experienced in the past, where we really see ourselves in the future, and what we have done for our own "peace" is important.
Giving ourselves time to heal or grieve from the previous marriage/relationship and not rushing into anything is imperative. Working with a professional (therapist or counselor) to help sort out the good and the bad from the past, and begin a pathway to healing or comfort for the grieving in case of spousal death. In the case of divorce, and I will use my own experience. Acknowledging mistakes and working through unhealed wounds was a must. I had to learn the "what" and the "why" in my previous marriage.
Interestingly it does seem that after you have lived alone for a few years and then the years keep going by it might become harder or even less appealing to get into a relationship again.
I very much do believe older people can find love! So often people who don't want a future companion are basing it on past learned emotions and experiences. Many of us say we don't want all the "drama", but maybe subconsciously we are saying "I don't know if I can be vulnerable again".
One last personal thought.....
If you have worked on yourself in healing and good self care, why not give yourself a chance of feeling and seeing love in a way you have not experienced before.
I feel that I would like to share the last phase of life with a partner that I can laugh with, cry with, and enjoy activities with. ❤️👥🙏

My C-PTSD kept me from having a love life. I've always loved one women or another from afar. It's been heartbreaking and lonely for me. Now I'm a senior citizen and resigned to spending the rest of my life alone, as well.
I didnt want to get with anybody else if my husbamd passed or divorced hes been gone a year now amd im questioning if i might want someone..
@pamharley003 My first time I was alone I had got out of a 10 year abusive relationship and at dat point my decision was I WAS DONE with men permantely. A few years went by and In doing so I learned how to be my own best friend and enjoy my own company however as time went on tho I still wanted to be alone God had other plans. a guy entered my life dat eventually we got in a relationship. I lost him in 2020 he showed me what real love was and how it felt as well as taught me how to accept it and giv back in return. I think of him every single day and even mention his name at least once a day but many days its so much more. Now I again chose to be alone but different from the first time I go by the memories I had wit this guy. Tho I think he would like knowing I am wit someone so I will be open to it if it comes and if not I am ok wit dat as well. I am at the age now dat really to start over I saw in my first relationship although I suggested therapy even if he had said yes I likely wouldnt have given my all. Where as in the last relationship we each put in 100% into one another. It took work and in the work we became one. If he was here now then sure we would be still putting in our 100% but to start over and do all dat work I am not up to all dat so if person came in my life now he really would need be somethin’ extra special to get me to change my decision.

I think many people are lonely and if they opened up to a deep friendship or relationship they would spend their golden years with companionship. Age is not a deterrent.
I found after a long marriage I found someone and fell in love, and it is a different experience. It is one that made me grow and feel alive again ... being alone living with memories I was not really living.
I look at the huge increase of romance scams aimed at the older folks because at least scammers know far too many are lonely.

I think that even if I am alone then I need to have a life of my own based on a strong spiritual practice of some kind. When the other person is the foundation of my life I may compromise basic principles to try to save the relationship. With a strong spiritual practice, whatever happens to the relationship, I will be okay.
@pamharley003 I don’t think anyone is truly “meant” to be alone. It can feel that way sometimes, especially after disappointments or long periods without connection, but that doesn’t make it a fixed destiny. Sometimes it’s more about timing, healing, or the spaces we’re in.
And yes, older people absolutely can find love. In fact, many say it’s even more meaningful because there’s more self-awareness, clarity, and depth. Love doesn’t have an expiration date.
It’s okay to have moments where you question it, but your story isn’t finished yet. There’s still room for connection, in whatever form it comes.
