How to forget someone & move on? How to cope up with a breakup?

It is easier said than done. It is not easy to get over someone you loved a few days/weeks/months ago. For a second, I may feel convinced that falling in love with someone is easy but getting over it? Nah! It is tougher than what we think. Sometimes it is more than a year and still someone feel stuck and do not know how to get over it.

I read many posts in our community where members like me feeling struggled to get over the breakup. So, this is something that I wanted to write for a good time and here we are!

Everything in this world is temporary and has to come to an end. Relationships are also! There are times when you quit something and move on to something new and big. It is a decision.

Break up is a decision. Sometimes it is mutual. You both decided to separate your ways. But sometimes it is forced one from one side to another. A relationship is a mutual agreement and when mutual understanding and decisions are not on the track, separation is the likely outcome. I guess it is okay to break up rather than being with someone who impose beliefs on you and do not value you or your decisions.

So a decision made either mutual or forced one. In both cases, it is going to be tough to get over it. It feels like starting from scratch. A fresh start!

Here are a few things I find helpful in getting the process of moving on started--

Take your time -- No one knows you better than you. Take some time to be you. Sometimes introspection and self reflection help you understand it wasnt that bad as much as you are thinking. It is good it happened sooner than later.

Be open to new possibilities -- When you keep yourself open to new possibilities, you find ways to deal with how to get over it. You open yourself to write the next chapter of your life. And that is how you can get over a bad chapter of your life.

Rearrange your life -- After breakup, life seems jumbled as you went through a lot. So to get a fresh view, start from your place. Rearrange it and remove all the stuffs that might remind you of your ex or any such memories. These stuffs act like triggers. The minute you view them, you relive the memory and start thinking about anything and everything related to it again.

Vent -- Many emotions might be bottled up. You may want to cry, scream, break things and let all the frustration out. But sometimes we do not know how to vent? Or whom to count to vent? But if you are reading this, I must say you are lucky as you got 7Cups and its members who are really caring and supporting. Take out all your frustrations and take a fresh breathe.

Today is your day -- You are in the present day and it is your day. Either you keep thinking and make it tough to get over it or live your life by your rules. It is your decision.

First of all ... I think it's difficult to just "forget someone and move on" because that sounds like treating someone who you once considered a priority as an "option", and just because everything in today's world is all about momentary pleasure rather than true and genuine friendship and relationships doesn't mean that whatever relationship we might find ourselves in has to be.

That being said ... I have indeed been in countless situations where my friendship was considered an "option" when those who I thought were friends decided to "forget about my friendship" and move on". no They're the ones who "butterbomb" me with false compliments but don't mean any of it. crying

I think when something like that happens and we get thrown away like garbage by former friends, self-care is important, as is confiding in those we feel we can still trust. yes

Those we get attached to for a long time can make things seem unforgettable. One day those feeling will fade away for good and all you can think of is good memories and perhaps what you have learned from the relationship. tIt will not go away instantly ofcourse but time will manage it eventually. We often don't think that perhaps separation came at the time when we were only taking care of the other side and neglecting our own needs and desires. We needed that wake up call to self assess ourselves and probably start evaluating how things were. No one wants to be unhappy but it needs to taste bitter at first to reach that level of peace and prosperity.

@ASilentObserver i love this thread, thank you so much for posting.

How to forget someone & move on? How to cope up with a breakup?

so, my recent break-up is not too long ago (around 2-3 months?) and to be honest in my eyes, you wont ever forget a person. but with time you learn to appreciate what you have had but also you will be able to look back at it and think: this is not what i would want anymore. For me personally, distraction helps a lot. Your love life is only one area of your life, maybe the other areas of your life could use some nurturing now! Focusing on friends, family, education, work, goals.... anything that makes you feel like you are doing something and going forward! But this is just my experience and you Obs listed some awesome tips as well.

For me, a big part of it was accepting that the things that I wanted him to change were about him, not about me. Although I was able to change to fit his needs, he was not able to change for mine. It's part of who he is, and has nothing to do with how much he loved me. Ultimately, I feel badly for him because those aspects of his character will make all relationships challenging for him. I still love him in the sense that I want what's best for him, but I also want what's best for me too--and because of that, I think it's better that we're apart.

I've found it helps to revisit places where I don't have happy memories with my ex even though it's hard, to sort of rewrite my memories. Otherwise the negative memories kind of paralyzed me and led me to avoiding things.

Although I'm not in a relationship or divorced or something I must say that,

IT ALL COMES TO YOU IN THE END.

IF YOU DECIDE TO BE HAPPY, YOU WILL, WHETHER IF THAT'S WITH OR WITHOUT HIM/HER. IT DOESN'T MATTER TRUST ME. IT'S LL ABOUT YOUR SURVIVAL. YOU MUST BE A BIT EGOIC IN THE END TO SURVIVE. FORGET ABOUT THE S%'+= AND FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE. DO SOME THINGS TO BE HAPPY. TRY FOR YOUR WELL BEING. UNTIL YOU ARE HAppY AND SECURE.

Be honest with yourself. If you let negative thoughts destroy you, they will.... and they can. You can destroy yourself. Noone else. So you have to at least realize that, if not experienced with hard breakups (although every person in your life plays a different role) you will feel like shit and you will cry your eyes out for at least some time. And you will feel miserable and exhausted emotionally if you haven't experienced bad breakups. So the first time is the worst. Then you will not feel the same ever again with your breakups. You will feel more secure about yourself, less attached, more free. The more you are 'engaged' to a relationship the more experienced with others you will be and the best of all is that you will be able to feel better and better about yourself. People wouldn't be able to hurt you as much as you allowed them to and you will be your best friend at all times. Relationship or not, doesn't matter, if you love yourself you will be always lovable. Never lonely never worthless. Always feel good.

Thank you for this, I have never dated but I have had plenty of break-ups with friends

1. If I do the breaking, I have felt sad for a few days but most of the time, I am gratful for my space

2. Whereas, if someone dumps me and suddenly turns cold, shows their true colors or ghost me, I have retaliated against them before,
