In-Person/Online Support Group Library
by VinylFly

...See more The following is an incomplete library of both in-person and online free of charge or by donation support groups for those suffering from a wide range of addictions including alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex and pornography, eating disorders, mental health and behavioral addiction, and other addictions not specified here. There's also a section for friends and family members of people with addictions along with some harm-reduction resources for people who are currently active in their addictions. Please feel free to add your own groups and resources which aren't on this list or to share your stories and experiences with recovery support groups. Before we get started, let's define a few words and phrases which may be unfamiliar to many who are new to the world of addictions and recovery. Definitions Abstinence: The practice of restraining oneself completely from indulging in their addiction. Moderation: The practice of regulating and putting a limit on one's indulgence in addictive behaviors and activities. Recovery: A process of change through which an individual achieves freedom from the problems caused by their addiction and improved health, wellness, and quality of life. May or may not include complete abstinence from substance use and/or addictive behaviours. Sobriety: A state of not being intoxicated by alcohol or other mind-altering substances 12-Step Program: A spirituality and abstinence-focused program based on a set of guiding principles outlining a course of action for recovery from addictions. The original 12-step group was Alcoholics Anonymous and it was founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Robert Holbrook Smith (also known as "Bill W." and "Dr. Bob"). For more information about the specifics of the program and a detailed outline of the guiding principles and steps, check out the 7cups 12-step working guide (https://www.7cups.com/12-step-working-guide/ [https://www.7cups.com/12-step-working-guide/]) Harm-reduction: Policies, programs, and practices that aim to reduce the harm associated with the use of substances. It is about preventing harm rather than complete abstinence, recognizing that stopping use may not be realistic or desirable for everyone. Secular: Attitudes, activities, or other things that have no religious or spiritual basis. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: A type of psychotherapy that focuses on the development of personal coping strategies that target solving current problems and changing unhelpful patterns in cognitions (e.g. thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes), behaviors, and emotional regulation. Now that we've got the definitions out of the way, let's get on to the list of support groups. Addiction And Childhood Trauma (Discussion)
by magicalOcean594
Last post
June 23rd, 2025
...See more Addiction and Childhood Trauma Have you ever wondered if your addiction stems from your childhood trauma? There are several underlying causes of addiction. One of the leading causes of developing addiction later in adult life is childhood trauma. A study done on PTSD and substance use disorder found that 77 percent of those who were suffering had at least one childhood traumatic event. To better understand the effects of trauma and how they lead to addiction, let’s take a closer look at the correlation between childhood adversary effects and addiction. First, what is childhood trauma? Its not an easy task to define trauma as Trauma differs from one individual to the next. Trauma is thought to result from an event or multiple events that an individual experiences as emotionally or physically harmful. These experiences have lasting effects on the wellbeing of the child into adulthood. Common traumatic childhood experiences can include: -neglect -sexual,physical, and phycological abuse -grief, loss of someone close -witnessing domestic violence -having a parent who used drugs or was mentally ill As children, one of our fundamental psychological needs is attachment. We attach ourselves to our parents and look to them for almost all of our needs. As a child, your variety for attachment is limited to a small circle of people. Usually your parents, close relatives, and family friends. Stress and trauma can interrupt the development for attachment. The experience of childhood trauma has a detrimental effect on how individuals see the world and their place in it. Traumas that result from acts such as abuse and neglect create a negative self-image. Deep down, most people who have suffered childhood trauma don’t think that they amount to enough. They may also see the world around them as a hostile place. Childhood traumas can teach us that the places and situations we should associate as safe and comforting could be hostile. This frame of mind is a negative place to live hence why individuals who are the victims of childhood trauma will often seek to escape. Some addictions that others seek to escape too are not limited too but include: -substances -sex -gambling -work -food -relationships -social media -self-harm If you would like to read more on childhood trauma and addiction please click on the link below, to read the full article. Childhood Trauma and Addiction: The Connection Explained | Safe & Sound Treatment (safesoundtreatment.com) Discussion questions Many people use drugs as a crutch to help them handle difficult emotions such as anger, depression, and anxiety. These emotions are challenging for everyone, and it can be hard to resist the temptation of an easy escape. What choices does a person have, other than drug use, when they are confronted with these painful emotions? What emotions might lead you to using drugs or alcohol? Magics answer: I have a choice to move forward in my life positive, use my support network, and help others and give back (service work). Some emotions' that may lead me back to drugs and alcohol may be Anger, irritation, Hurt, shame, and guilt.

...See more I am a alcoholic I drink until I black out I had an episode last week. But I currently 5 days sober now I did have urges to drink a few days ago but I didn't drink I am proud of myself I really do hope to continue on my sobriety from alcohol. It's hard I come from an alcoholic family I had few family deaths in the past two years from them drinking everyday. I tend to get my urges when I am stressed or depressed and I would drink my pain away because that's all I ever saw. But when I black out I'm an angry drunk or I wonder off and have people worried don't know where I am and have family and friends look for me. So I will try to check in as much as I can and have this post help remind me to stay sober and fight the urges when I get them. I been sober twice from alcohol 1st time was for 2 years and the 2nd time was for 6 months last year.

ACA - Adult Children of Alcoholics & Dysfunctional Families

...See more Good morning, Forum, By recommendation of my therapist, I attended my first ACA meeting last night and it was too incredible not too share. Adult Children of Alcoholics & Dysfunctional Families offers free online group support environments that hold space for hard conversation. As such, I wanted to be sure to share this resource with you all in case anyone else is interested. The Mission: [https://adultchildren.org/] Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA)/Dysfunctional Families is a Twelve Step [https://adultchildren.org/literature/steps/], Twelve Tradition [https://adultchildren.org/literature/traditions/] program of people who grew up in dysfunctional homes. We meet to share our experience of growing up in an environment where abuse, neglect and trauma infected us. This affects us today and influences how we deal with all aspects of our lives. ACA provides a safe, nonjudgmental environment that allows us to grieve our childhoods and conduct an honest inventory of ourselves and our family—so we may (i) identify and heal core trauma, (ii) experience freedom from shame and abandonment, and (iii) become our own loving parents. What is ACA? [https://adultchildren.org/newcomer/] ACA is a 12 Step program that focuses on emotional sobriety. We were all profoundly affected by the dysfunction in our families of origin, whether alcohol was present in the home or not. Consequently, we developed a set of “laundry list” traits that helped us survive that experience. These traits may have been adaptive at the time, but have now come to substantially disrupt our lives. We recover by “working our program.” This means attending ACA meetings and working the Twelve Steps. The Steps are not meant to be worked in isolation, which is why we work with more experienced members, a twelve step group, and/or our fellow travelers (others in ACA). ACA is a spiritual program, not a religious program. The only requirement for membership is a desire to recover from the effects of growing up in an alcoholic or otherwise dysfunctional family. ACA has no membership fees. Since each meeting is autonomous, and each meeting can be a different experience, we recommend that if your first meeting is not a fit for you, try other meetings before deciding if the ACA program can be helpful in your journey from discovery to recovery. Meetings are intended to be a safe place. We share our experience, strength, and hope; we offer compassion and understanding. We also have the right not to share, unless we are ready. We welcome you to join us. Please note that ACA is not a replacement for addicts working an abstinence program in other Twelve Step fellowships. Adult Children of Alcoholics works best for people that have obtained a level of sobriety in their other program(s). The Laundry List: [https://adultchildren.org/literature/laundry-list/] The Laundry List is a list of traits generally exhibited by adult children of alcoholics & dysfunctional families and serves as the basis for the problem statement. [https://adultchildren.org/literature/problem/] The Adult Children Bookstore: [https://shop.adultchildren.org/] ACA literature for recovery and follow along workbooks. Find a Meeting: [https://adultchildren.org/meeting-group/] There are many types of ACA Meetings [https://adultchildren.org/meeting-search/]: in-person (face to face) [https://adultchildren.org/meeting-search/], online [https://adultchildren.org/quick-search/?onlinebt=Click+Here], telephone [https://adultchildren.org/quick-search/?telephonebt=Click+Here], and audio/online [https://adultchildren.org/quick-search/?audiobt=Click+Here]. ACA also offers hybrid meetings both online and in-person. You are not alone. 💝 Source: Welcome - Adult Children of Alcoholics & Dysfunctional Families [https://adultchildren.org/]

...See more I have realised that smoking is for no good. It’s a waste of money now and in the future. Smoking deteriorates my health costing me more money in the future. I have bigger goals in my life and in order to reach my full potential and have greater experiences in life I have to quit this. I have tried to quit smoking before but I comeback here again. Please, if anyone can give me some tips or help me some how or share their experience. It would be great and helpful for me through this journey. Looking forward to your answers.
