Stress Awareness Event - How to cope with stress?
Hello, my lovely community!
Self-Harm Recovery and Anxiety support are collaborating together and are happy to welcome you into our 2-day long event about Stress Awareness! (You can find a masterpost here.)
Whether we're worried about things in the future, or so stressed and anxious we can't move forward, the stress takes a toll on our minds and bodies and affects our health. Excessive or unmanaged anxiety can become unhealthy if it takes the form of an anxiety disorder, for example. That’s why I would like to talk a little bit about ways on how to cope with stress or anxiety.
People usually manage their stress or anxiety in so many possible ways so here are just some of them:
- Take a time-out. Practice yoga, listen to music, meditate, get a massage, or learn relaxation techniques.
- Eat well-balanced meals
- Limit alcohol and caffeine, which can aggravate anxiety and trigger panic attacks.
- Get enough sleep. When stressed, your body needs additional sleep and rest.
- Exercise daily to help you feel good and maintain your health.
- Light a candle. Using essential oils or burning a scented candle may help reduce your feelings of stress and anxiety.
- Take deep breaths
- Colouring mandalas
- Count to 10 slowly. Repeat, and count to 20 if necessary.
- Welcome humor. A good laugh goes a long way.
- Write it down
- Maintain a positive attitude. Make an effort to replace negative thoughts with positive ones.
- Help other people. Volunteer or find another way to be active in your community, which creates a support network and gives you a break from everyday stress.
- Learn what triggers your anxiety. Is it work, family, school, or something else you can identify? Write in a journal when you’re feeling stressed or anxious, and look for a pattern.
- Talk to someone. Tell friends and family you’re feeling overwhelmed, and let them know how they can help you.
Now it’s time for some questions for you!
Are you using any coping mechanism while experiencing stress/anxiety?
Do you have your own coping mechanism which works the best for you?
Thank you so much for participating in a Stress Awareness Event. Don’t forget you are not alone and we are here for you. Hope you all are safe and well.

Are you using any coping mechanism while experiencing stress/anxiety?
I may meditate or listen to music or write my problem in a 7cups thread.
Do you have your own coping mechanism which works the best for you?
No I remain stressed till the problem end or solve.
Are you using any coping mechanism while experiencing stress/anxiety?
I try to work out every morning, running three times a week, yoga three times, and either hiking or cycling the last day. While actively stressing out, I tend to do deep breathing exercises or journal my thoughts out, just to get them out of my head. It helps me feel lighter almost. I rationalize my feelings: why do I feel this way, and is it justified.
Do you have your own coping mechanism which works the best for you?
I pray. Been praying a lot these last few days, but it brings me comfort knowing that God is in control. It's easier to carry my faith than anything else, and it brings me comfort.
Are you using any coping mechanism while experiencing stress/anxiety?
Yes - meditation.
Do you have your own coping mechanism which works the best for you?
Meditation will work most of the time, but sometimes I just like to sit in a recliner with a heating pad on my back and neck, put on a quiet meditation or just shut all the noise and lights and whatnot off, and take the time to relax, breathe, and pray.
Are you using any coping mechanism while experiencing stress/anxiety?
Some coping mechanisms I've been using are deep breaths, meditation, listening to soothing music, having something nice to eat, reading a book I love, and spending time with friends
Do you have your own coping mechanism which works the best for you?
The coping mechanism that works best for me is listening to soothing music
@tami150
1. Are you using any coping mechanism while experiencing stress/anxiety?
If I can catch myself before spiraling into anxiety, I try to refocus my thoughts on something positive.Unfortunately, I don’t usually catch myself and just spiral into anxiety.
2. Do you have your own coping mechanism which works the best for you?
Prayer and/or refocusing on something positive
@tami150
Are you using any coping mechanism while experiencing stress/anxiety?
As described in this post, taking a time-out.
Do you have your own coping mechanism which works the best for you?
I walk away from the situation. I need to get some perspective before my mind goes on a downward spiral. I like to go for a walk in the woods, take some deep breathes and really think things through. The only issue is that life doesn't always allow time for this.
@tami150
Are you using any coping mechanism while experiencing stress/anxiety?
Music - video games - coloring - deep breathing - going for a walk - if it's nice out doing yard work helps sometimes
Do you have your own coping mechanism which works the best for you?
It's allways changing - because what works one time may not work the next time. So I try to switch it up and keep trying until I find something that does work
@tami150
Are you using any coping mechanism while experiencing stress/anxiety?
I try to. I remind myself to take deep breaths, slow in, slow out. I talk to my overactive Amy (amygdala) and tell her to stop all is okay and to get off the panic button. Walking and gym exercising are very helpful. I am learning to reach out more and share my thoughts with others so they are not all bottled up in my own head.
Do you have your own coping mechanism which works the best for you?
I have found going on walks and being mindful with my surroundings. Right now the bright colors of the leaves, the smell off fall, and I have been enjoying walking through piles of leaves. I also get some relief from the gym, even on bad anxiety days, I get a couple hours of less anxiety running through my body.
Are you using any coping mechanism while experiencing stress/anxiety? - I do a few like walking, cleaning, taking a nap.
Do you have your own coping mechanism which works the best for you? - The best I find that works is writing and cleaning.
I have started meditating! This is a life saver for me!!
