Stress Awareness Event - How to cope with stress?
Hello, my lovely community!
Self-Harm Recovery and Anxiety support are collaborating together and are happy to welcome you into our 2-day long event about Stress Awareness! (You can find a masterpost here.)
Whether we're worried about things in the future, or so stressed and anxious we can't move forward, the stress takes a toll on our minds and bodies and affects our health. Excessive or unmanaged anxiety can become unhealthy if it takes the form of an anxiety disorder, for example. That’s why I would like to talk a little bit about ways on how to cope with stress or anxiety.
People usually manage their stress or anxiety in so many possible ways so here are just some of them:
- Take a time-out. Practice yoga, listen to music, meditate, get a massage, or learn relaxation techniques.
- Eat well-balanced meals
- Limit alcohol and caffeine, which can aggravate anxiety and trigger panic attacks.
- Get enough sleep. When stressed, your body needs additional sleep and rest.
- Exercise daily to help you feel good and maintain your health.
- Light a candle. Using essential oils or burning a scented candle may help reduce your feelings of stress and anxiety.
- Take deep breaths
- Colouring mandalas
- Count to 10 slowly. Repeat, and count to 20 if necessary.
- Welcome humor. A good laugh goes a long way.
- Write it down
- Maintain a positive attitude. Make an effort to replace negative thoughts with positive ones.
- Help other people. Volunteer or find another way to be active in your community, which creates a support network and gives you a break from everyday stress.
- Learn what triggers your anxiety. Is it work, family, school, or something else you can identify? Write in a journal when you’re feeling stressed or anxious, and look for a pattern.
- Talk to someone. Tell friends and family you’re feeling overwhelmed, and let them know how they can help you.
Now it’s time for some questions for you!
Are you using any coping mechanism while experiencing stress/anxiety?
Do you have your own coping mechanism which works the best for you?
Thank you so much for participating in a Stress Awareness Event. Don’t forget you are not alone and we are here for you. Hope you all are safe and well.

I mindfully pay attention to my breathing and body tenseness.
If my breathing becomes shallow or if my body becomes tense, then I might do the things below.
First ask myself:
What what is causing the tenseness?
Am I worried about something, if so what? Is it a real danger now?
Am I being obsessive in some unhealthy way?
Am I sitting too long? Do I need to get up? Move, stretch?
Am I hungry or thirsty?
I might:
drink some water,
sometimes warm or hot water is more soothing.
Am I concentrating too hard?
Am I not breathing properly?
Is my posture hunched over causing body stress?
Am I overdue for a break?
I might:
get up and move,
get away from the situation,
get away from device screens.
I might:
stretch,
maybe do some tiny Tai Chi flow stretch and breathe moves
as explained here
https://www.7cups.com/forum/HealthyLiving_141/ExerciseandActivity_825/TinyHabitsversionofSlowRelaxing20secondMovestoInduceCalmness1stTinySwayArms_231188/
I might:
do a quick exercise or stretch video routine
(I have a big collection of YouTube links to pick from).
I might:
do some rhythmic moves from side to side, like swaying stretches, which feel very good and is supposed to help the brain resync and relax.
I might:
slow down breathing to 6 breaths per minute with emphasis on a slight extra exhale
I call it DARTH VADER breathing, as explained here
https://www.7cups.com/forum/HealthyLiving_141/ExerciseandActivity_825/DARTHVADERBREATHINGTECHNIQUEImadeittofixmyshallowbreathingwhenstressed_231131/
and I might also use my breath-reminder-beeper bookmarklet app I recently made as explained here, which I find to be a very relaxing breathing training tool (also for "entraining")
https://www.7cups.com/forum/HealthyLiving_141/ExerciseandActivity_825/BREATHINGTIMERTOIMPROVEBREATHINGORFORMEDITATIONJustmakeabookmarkwithittorunitinyourbrowser_231132/
I might:
take my mind off things for a while and do a mental "reset"
like by doing some chores or doing some cooking,
something completely different and in a different room.

Thankyou for the lovely post, amazing points ❤🌻
When I am stressed or anxious, listening to music or journaling or taking a nap helps me calm down a little ❤
@tami150
Are you using any coping mechanism while experiencing stress/anxiety?
I use music I grew up with when trying to cope with things I am going through. I write daily in my journal and use it as times as a to do list to work on things I want to make better for myself.
Do you have your own coping mechanism which works the best for you?
crafts, meditation, walks on the beach
Are you using any coping mechanism while experiencing stress/anxiety? I practise a lot of yoga. Or pilates if is the stress related to my body. This is the healthiest way to exercise for now.
Do you have your own coping mechanism which works the best for you? I name things around me and focus on really active muscle release :)
Are you using any coping mechanism while experiencing stress/anxiety?
Listening to music and going on a walk
Do you have your own coping mechanism which works the best for you?
Clearing my head in one way or another
