@Clarisse29

very interesting concept but

IMO many people tend to NOT acknowledge the fact that they present a different person on those sites etc then who they really are

Dear sir(s),

It has come to my attention that I cannot understand you. What you portray on main social media is someone who disappears for long periods of time, and comes up occasionally to make humorous anecdotes, question profound things, or, often, both at the same time.

I feel that those things you say are very true to who you are and what you think about all day. However, the long periods of disappearance seem inconsistent to me. As far as I can tell, the problem is that you *can't* disappear. You are so ingrained and networked with the people around you in waking life. Why should this not extend to the people that you think about just as much if not even more often at times.

This said, who are you waiting for on other social media? I'm referring to the ones that you have a profile on, but never use, or have anything of interest on said profile. You aren't known to pick things up in waking life just to put them down. Or is it that the other social media is intrinsically uninteresting? I must admit that I do think that to be the case with at least a couple of them.

Finally, there is the matter of how you interact on things aside from, say, ***. Your posts are sometimes obnoxious enough to potentially have the effect of upsetting others. You overthink your messages and replies to people who are just most going to ghost or ignore you. Also, there are your niche interests, such as posting groups for ironically making fun of things that you love. Why do you spend more time on all of this than your actual friends?

One final point to make, however, is that I must confess that your time spent on social media is very healthy, and perhaps even too low. There is no further point to this letter, however, I hope that it gives you something to think about, and that all goes well for you in your endeavors.

Yours,

Yourself

(To Myself) Hey, you don't post as often as you would like. It always seems like somebody else has already posted the things you would like to post. Once in awhile you have something to write that nobody has written yet. Then you wonder if it's relevant or helpful. Will the people who read it think you're an idiot? Does it matter?

It doesn't seem like just the right thread is there for you to really say what you need to say. You don't know what that thread would be or what it is that you really want to say, either. You just keep looking and hoping that the right thread or question will pop up that will call for that comment you've been needing to make for so long, whatever that comment may be.

I love this prompt.

Dear Person I Present on Social Media:

Who are you anyway?

Do I even like you?

Love,

Pat

Dear Aqua,

and other usernames you use on various social media platforms,

The online world has been your life. You've learned and immersed yourself in so many interests, old and new. You've met various people, whom themselves might be facades. You've connected with them, you cared for them, but then they left you, like people did in real life to me, in the past. We didn't fulfill our tasks, and that affected us. I've lost chances and money, all the while being called crazy and uncaring. The people around me have been affected.

You've written such letters, but they didn't affect what I did. The amount of information, and things you want to pay attention to, have affected you and me both. I am being called immature, and treated like a child, worse than when I was actually a kid, and you were not present as often. You wish I could change that.

We are both confused, I know. We almost became one and the same, and you cannot coexist with me unless I give you the space to do so, and I haven't even succeeded giving myself autonomy. My grief is yours too, and vice-versa, because emotions never know boundaries. They always learn them, according to the people in which they reside in, and interact with. That is why you talk about them online.

You are a sweet, kind, sane, rational person, until I show up and ruin everything when you are triggered. You are hiding me. You don't want that, but you have to, but you also love privacy, so...

I must find a way to balance ourselves again, for both of our sakes.

Hopeful, but also distraught,

Your real-life conscience <3 :)

Dear Anna,

Your hurt is not shown,
Your pain is hidden.
But your bravery is not.
And neither your thoughts.

You show strength and support.
Have a way with words.
But still don't express,
not what goes within.

Some things need air,
the things you hide.
The fear you went through,
what you hide behind a smile.

You are strong minded,
you share your thoughts.
You have humor and joy
that you do show a lot.

The closedness you have,
is what you feel protects you.
It has always worked,
even before you went online.

I know you, even though I don't.
I see what you hide,
I see what you show.
I know you are open,
I know you are closed.

Some things are shared,
others are not.
I am proud of you,
you have opened up.

But the pain you hold back,
can come out too.
Because the world can know,
what has been done.

@Clarisse29

Dear social media self,

It is easier to present anonymous, mundane glimpses of life to the world, than to be vulnerable. I challenge you to be authentic and not hide the difficult, messy parts of your life. You can be behind a screen, sure, but always be real, be true to yourself, your goals and values, and continue to be UN-apologetically you! Because the world needs more of your encouragement and hope. Shine a light in the darkness of our world.

Note: I have never done one of these writing prompts before, but I really like this idea. I will look for more of them in the future.
