Anxious Mind

Can a person with an anxious mind start their own business? That's always in my 2 am thoughts like I'm in a job I'm not happy with and constantly thinking of starting a business but that panic of what if it failed or didn't work is too frightening.

Yes, a person with an anxious mind can start their own business. In fact, a lot of successful entrepreneurs have anxiety or overthink things. It’s just that they learn how to work through it rather than letting it stop them

Absolutely, all you need to do is gather up the courage and think it through. I don't know what kind of business you are looking to start, but as someone who is going through the thick of it in their marriage and a huge overthinker with major anxiety including social anxiety, I recently started my own business. It's nothing major, I'm just selling handmade items that I make, but I weighed the options for a long time before taking the dive. I am vending at craft shows and networking with other crafters which is all a huge step out of my comfort zone. Just go into it knowing it may not be immediately successful, and there may very well be difficult times, but believe in yourself.

I believe having a job you are not satisfied with can be a powerful positive motivation - either for changing a job (or a profession), or for starting your own business.

But what about anxiety? I think there is some kind of paradox hiding here:

If your business is not successful first time, you can fail, but gather a lot of new experience. It's certainly better than doing nothing. And you can use the experience to start again, this time with a full success. But then you can't see you never failed.

If you succeed with your business from the beginning, you are just happy. But you may still feel afraid of the day when something in the environment changes and things go bad.

Or maybe it is just like the rest of our lives? Attempts and mistakes? And it is not so important if we fail or succeed, but that we keep trying?

I might be also important what other qualities you see in yourself as a businessman.

For example, I never tried my own business, because I thought going for the money can make me sacrifice my values, personal values or peace of mind (but do all businesses work like that?).

Or I am not good at managing other people (but I could still be a single person company, right?).

Some other people may not be very good at self-discipline (e.g. spending money before they earn it) or dislike the idea of working within no fixed hours, your brain processing data 24/7.

But if your business is your mission or hobby at the same time, you can be a double winner...

As the other person said, maybe it's not about how anxious you feel now, but in what way you would overcome your anxiety, and make it work for you (like seeing the windows of opportunity for growth), not against you?

Oops. I am sorry for some typos. This six-day week at my job was really exhausting (battling some spring allergies at the same time). And I have just waken up from a small nap, reading your message.

Absolutely! I did. It was great for me because it kept me extra engaged and focused. Honestly, I don’t remember having as much anxiety then when I had my own business as now when I’m working for someone else. It probably has to do with the control aspect of anxiety.

Don't let the fear of falling stop you from running towards your dreams.

It's hard I know. But the fear of failure keeps so many people from doing what they love. Or at least trying it.

You may fail, you may lose, you may fall. Get back up and try again.

If you have children and/or a partner it's going to be harder to get things going while still supporting them, But not impossible. it will take some stress and work/dream balance. Which could be tough for anxious personalities.

@intuitiveNest4083 Absolutely, someone with an anxious mind can start their own business. In fact, many entrepreneurs face similar fears and doubts. The key is recognizing that anxiety is a natural part of growth and change, and it's possible to take small, manageable steps to mitigate the risks. Starting a business doesn’t mean diving in headfirst without a plan—it’s about building confidence as you go, testing ideas, and learning from setbacks. It’s okay to feel the fear, but it doesn’t have to hold you back. Sometimes, the biggest leap of all is just starting.

As someone who suffers from anxiety I started a business with my boyfirend 11 years ago. Of course I was nervous and scared but through the years learned the motorcycle industry where we repair motorcycles ( I even do all my repairs on my bikes myself that I ride). Just having good support helps along ways

Hello intuitiveNest4083. Many successful entrepreneurs have anxiety, and while it presents challenges, it can also be a strength. An anxious mind often means you’re detail-oriented, cautious, and proactive about problem-solving—all valuable traits in business. Would you like to talk about what is making you unhappy with your job?

I think job is harder for me than managing my own affairs... I don't like authoritarian cultures (typically found in workplaces).

@intuitiveNest4083 I ve had anxiety for a long time now and my way of life has been to stay and anxious wreck like if something is making me lose my mind but i know i have to do it for whatever reason may it be good for my long terms plan or good for someone else, i force myself to do it. I think we have to take chances on things and not let our fears hold us back even if we mess up because messing up and being afraid is just a part of life
