World MH Day: What do you wish more people knew about mental health?
Nobody asks for this disability just like no one goes looking for physical illness.
We dont do it on purpose to get special treatment or to get out of certain tasks, either 🙄😒
That it's not something we're bringing upon ourselves
@AbbyHarris1976 I totally agree with you on that one. We didn't wake up one morning and decided to pretend to have a mental health issue.
That it is similar to a physical injury. Just because you can't see it doesn't make it any less real.
I wish people knew the detriment an unhealthy mind can cause. People dismiss it simply because it's not a very visible or witnessable type of pain.
What do you wish more people knew about mental health?
I wish people knew how important it is for everyone with mental health problems to get treatment/counselling/therapy regardless of money or anything else. I am lucky that I get help from my family and my therapist but there are lots of people around the world who do not get the help they need both in developed and developing countries. To me it is important that people know they are not alone and that things can get better with the right help. It does not mean things will be forgotten or made to go away but that it is put in the right way so it results in empowerment, such as the empowerment I am learning/have learnt to have over my own body.
I think for me it would be more acceptance that people go through difficult times in their lives and that its okay to ask for help. @Kate
Just because Im depressed doesnt mean I want to kill myself. But people shouldnt just NOT care about mental health until it gets that far.
@Kate That sometimes it's not something the person brought onto themselves. A lot of people think that the person just refuses to be... "okay". But sometimes they have no choice, even though they try. Sometimes it's been there their whole life. They didn't just attain it through some traumatic experience. And a lot of people fail to see that. I think that's why so many folks with mental illness don't get better, because other either refuse or don't actually understand where the problem is coming from.
I wish people know how hard it was to get the things you need when it comes to mental health, how long it can take to find the right way the person suffering can help themselves. There's no quick fix, and even if you have medicine you're still going to have bad days. Mostly, I wish mental (medical) help was more readily available, and that stigmas didn't cloud people's judgments. I've heard of people suffering from DID getting questions after the Split movie about which alter was the "evil" one when DID is the brain's reaction to protecting itself at a young age.
I wish there was some arm of the government responsible for see that there is Mental Health in the Workplace! so many people become tramatized in school or at work, which may lead to, or even become a 'brain damaging stressor'. if it were a chemical poison, everyone would rise up in protest and the offensive material would be hastily removed. but because the Toxin is emotional or cognitive, it is tolerated. emotional and cognitive stressors lead to physical impairments, and are often at the bottom of 'stress related' disabling conditions.
@GusteeMoon123 omg this
It is so painfully true! The ones who gave me all the stress and anxiety at my old workplace had the audacity to tell me to "manage your stress" when there was no need for the kind of stress they were dishing in the first place!
