Things Christians Wish You Knew
If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?
If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

I’m adding a taglist to start, but this post is open to absolutely everyone! <3
@jesusredeemedme2425 thank you for tagging me
@jesusredeemedme2425 Looking forward to this thread! <3
@jesusredeemedme2425 we don't appreciate when someone makes fun of our God or religion. Most people wouldn't make fun of other religions, it's only ours that's constantly disrespected
@jesusredeemedme2425
We are easier to talk to than you think 🩵
We are not judgemental.
We know how to have fun.
No one is forcing us to believe and yes we can think for ourselves, we are actually quite intelligent.
We are not trying to turn you into a Christian.
And we accept you don't believe, but we don't accept the insults or the dismissiveness because it's our life 🥰

We are not trying to turn you into a Christian.
Are you sure about that? 🤔😉
@QuietByNature
💚🩷🩵💜💛💕🧡
Absolutely I'm sure 🥰
@jesusredeemedme2425
Kiara, I’m curious, What made you turn to Christianity? Were you brought up in a household that did not initially believe?
I was born into a Roman Catholic family, baptized as a child, went to a catholic school until grade 8 but after that they did not know where I belonged. Shipped me off to a catholic high school where I literally spent less than half the first day there.
Once I turned 16, my mom gave me the option if I wanted to continue joining her in church or not. I took that opportunity to run as fast as I could the other way 🙂 and I never looked back.
Remind me to respond to this when I have more time. Like tonight <3 Then I get the notification again lol
@jesusredeemedme2425
Sending you a little nudge to remind you ☺️🤗
Thank you for the reminder <3
My extended family is either very much atheist, or seemingly believe little to nothing. They were all abusive. My mom became a Christian and swore that the cycle ended with her. She raised me and introduced me to Jesus. I don’t believe because my mom believes… I believe because I’ve seen Jesus move in my life. I’m different because of Him. <3
Why did you run?
@jesusredeemedme2425
Why did you run?
For me it was a few things that led to no longer believing. The junior school i attended was very strick, disciplined students with a strap, out in the open so all the other students could watch and learn!
A school mate of mine was an alter boy and was abused by a priest. He turned out to be a bigger sh!te disturber than I.
One of the biggest is, why all the different religions and how stories in the Bible didn't jive with science-based evidence (incest for one). Why do some religions have no Jesus?
@QuietByNature
It's so terribly sad that this was your experience and your friends. This should never have happened. It breaks my heart that it did, no justification 🧡 I was never forced to believe, pray or go to Mass, I like to focus on the love, the hspougess, the idea of mercy and grace, humility, that's what the Christian message means to me, and as a Christian, I try to just be me and set an example of being welcoming, non judgemental , kind and just me and hope my faith speaks for itself and uplifts 🥰
@Amanda84
Tthings would be different if all Christians were as kind and thoughtful as you. ☺️🤗🥰
I’m so sorry… That kind of treatment is cruel and evil. No Christian should do that. Ever.
I’m not good with apologetics, so I’ll mostly let others answer these if that’s ok <3 But here’s my thoughts…
Every person and people group in the world attempts to figure out why they’re here and why the world exists. That’s where all the religions come from.
So I actually did read about the incest thing semi recently. If I remember correctly: So people were only allowed to marry siblings near the beginning of the world, before weird gene stuff was able to start forming. (Adam and Eve were the only parents, so they had no choice!) Then God instituted rules later forbidding relations between family members, to avoid all the weird stuff that happens with that, like disabilities caused by interbreeding (if that’s the right word?).
Not everyone believes in Jesus. Some do, but don’t see him as God. Others have other gods or belief systems.
I’m tired and hope that makes sense <3
@jesusredeemedme2425 Christians are like anyone else, some can be great some can be imperfect. The difference is some try to live with their sin and be comfortable, others try to turn from it and better themselves. Some Christians I grew up with are saintly to an almost unbelievable degree, some were once very fallen and flawed, but they both come together to improve themselves, and I think that's the most important part. Always improve on how you are, and though we all might still slip up it makes us no less bad for at least trying. Its a pretty universal message. Redemption and love. We can all improve if we only try.
Yay post time!
I love talking about and explaining Christianity, at least my part of it, bc there are a lot of misconceptions and differences between each section. I’m Protestant, which means we don’t really talk much about Saints. It just isn’t an important part. Some of our traditions, like baptism and communion (sharing bread and wine/grape juice) are also different.
Here’s a really big important thing!: not everyone who calls themselves a Christian actually follows what Jesus said, and all they do is hurt others and their ideas about Christianity. I always get sad when I hear the stories about strict Christian schools, or people who impose their beliefs. It isn’t right. Christianity is all about love, and some people, even people who go to church every Sunday, don’t get that.
Christianity also follows a lot of science! If you want, I can talk abt Creation and the Big Bang, that’s a part I’m decently comfortable with, and why I scientifically agree with Creation over evolution (as someone who lovesssss biology 😉)
If you want to comment or have a question, feel free :) I know my first way of explaining everything doesn’t work for all brains, I’m all good to reword things if it would help. Tbh even if you have an insult, go ahead. We can talk it out, if you’re willing.
I’m a newer christian in certain ways. While, I grew up Catholic, I truly did not know much aside from the basics of Jesus Christ and some things here and there. Yes some friends of mine, invited me to some of their Protestant churches. While, kind of them to invite me, I always felt a cultural divide. Both of my parents are solely Spanish speakers here in the US. My sister and I were born in America but as a result we would attend mass in Spanish. You can imagine, Catholic Church services being slow paced, but truly felt unable to understand anything nor put two and two together. The few times, while working towards communion and confirmation, the youth teachers would, speak to us in English and truly teach us about Christ and his teachings. Those, are the few moments, where I truly felt connected to my lord. Yes he is our, lord. Sorry to make it lengthy, but i wanted to share my story as, after so many attempts from others to bring me to the faith. Nothing worked because, from what I feel and have lived, it’s not about a religion but truly coming to faith. Once, I had appeared abandoned and unwell to others; I still felt a calming presence guiding me. Till one, day I was hosting at the restaurant, I worked at inside the airport. A youngish man, had approached and asked for a menu. He looked at the menu all too intensely. I felt usual about his presence. While, I tell you there was nothing extraordinary about this man in presence, believe me I would not be able to recognize him again. But his eyes stared at mine intently, as he asked me “do you believe in Jesus,” while I felt off-put by this weird man, i suprsingly said yes. Almost like in a trance, unable to speak, I listened to him, as he said “alright, just know he’s coming, and I’ll be back,”While I assumed this man, would be back later, claiming to be a missionary, he never came back nor asked for me. Truly a weird man, in every way making me feel exposed and stunned at the same time. Almost like, I’m to shocked to move as I had been that day, he had approached me. Sorry to make this too long, and include this weird story but it goes with my coming to faith, and the journey, I’ve been on. More so, the many things, I had thought I once knew; since come to understand. Those things, especially about the beginning and end of the world and the creator. Including the prince, who came down to live amongst his brethren. So that who, believe in him may have eternal peace. And shortly, after that man’s visit I had started to read and study the word and look into what, that strange man meant to tell me. And little by little, I’ve been made whole again or maybe for the first time in my life. So that’s what, Jesus has brought to me, that nothing else not even family, traveling, education, friendships, or partners ever have. Because it’s peace 🕊️
Abundant experience, evidence and intuition has convinced me that my "calling" is among those who have been alienated by religion. It often feels like my comfort zone. I think that's because Spirit supports that perspective.
I grew up in a dysfunctional, toxic, cultlike, hyper religious family. At one point, I was abused and molested, both at school and at home. I was terrified of religion and that fear was a daily constant. I attended a couple of Catholic schools, and because I was already suffering and fearful, they tormented me without mercy.
There is much much more to the story, but I think you get the idea. By the time I was a young adult, I was absolutely convinced that it was impossible to be religious without also being a shameless hypocrite.
Despite my feelings about religion, I still managed to maintain a feeling of connection to God. Over the years, that sense of connection has continued to grow. I even felt that connection during the years of chronic depression and anxiety. Although sometimes it felt as though it wasn't enough, it had to have helped me survive.
Skipping past decades of life's ups and downs, tragedies and blessings, hopelessness and inspiration, here I am today. There isn't enough time to explain how I came to my current spiritual perspective.
I am Christian, yet among Christians, some would judge that my eternal soul was in jeopardy because I don't agree with them.
What I find interesting is that the more open my heart feels towards God, the less the written word about Christianity means to me. I think it has to do with what is written in Ephesians 1:13-14, and also referenced in several other scriptural locations. Clearly, it is the will of Jesus that each person relate directly to God, rather than spend their lives trying to use their intellect to figure out God's will.
I don't preach. Sometimes I answer questions as carefully as I can. Mostly, I demonstrate.
I've been in extremely dangerous situations, with people who seemed to be most un-godlike. Just as light and dark cannot coexist in the same place, neither can love and fear. With a prayer and good intentions, I was always okay.
My screen name reminds me of my hearts desire - to be a river of Spiritual Energy. It's been helpful.
I have a feeling that this thread will become huge. There’s certainly a lot to discuss.
