Things People Who Are Left-Handed Wish You Knew

If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?

If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

For me, it’s not a lot different from being right handed. Still, there are some smaller things that can get annoying 😐

For example, when you want to use scissors. The ones I own are for both left handed and right handed people, but the ones my family has in the kitchen aren’t and can only use them sometimes (???)🙄

Also, writing with ink is a mess, because my hand will smear the ink. That was a bit of an issue in elementary school, today I just don’t use ink for writing anymore 😅

Also, I want to add that being left handed isn’t always the same for everyone. For example: I can play the guitar the same way a right handed person does, while some left handed people have to hold it differently (which I imagine to be really annoying) 🤔😁

What makes scissors different?

@jesusredeemedme2425

Not sure about that tbh but I think it changes which part of the blades is up and which is below? I‘m not good at explaining this in English 😅 Never had to talk about scissors in such detail! 😂

Hi 🦋 😊 . I can understand that cus when I am eating with my right hands if I had to use my scissors... I will use my left hand. but I can't cut through it.... even if I try 😅 . Hmm now i gotta know that it's about blades and not about hands lol 😆 thanks for sharing .

I'm left-handed, and I have to eat on the left side of right-handers so I don't bump their elbows.

@jesusredeemedme2425

so I have many people in my family who are left handed, my mum, sis , gran , uncle , two of my cousins and maybe more, cause of it I learnt that most of the equipment are designed for right handed people like scissors that this is one of the major reasons why many left handed people die, also in many cultures being left handed is considered as a bad thing, like my mum had to put up a habit of eating with a right hand and my sister often gets called out for it. in some cultures left hand is also considered a devil's hand ( you can explore this in the movie " the left handed girl " )

@Jesusredeemedme2425

The most annoying thing about being left handed to me is dry erase boards lol they are terrible

Something thats surprisingly hard is eating dinner with your right handed spouse. You HAVE to sit on the left and your spouse must sit on the right or else you guys will bump elbows all dinner long. Lol

Something a left handed person has to be mindful of is different cultures. Different cultures find it offensive to shake with their left hand so thats something that is always in the back of my mind.

My husband and I sometimes like to bump elbows on purpose! We're so silly.

Another leftie here! Sort of silly experience, but when people see you draw for so long and will even comment on the fact, and then come back later and be like wait! I just now noticed you're left handed ! Its so silly how many times this has actually happened to me , you would think watching me so intently like that you'd have already noticed :p

Sometimes I have to change the settings on games so the main controls are the ASWD rather than the arrows because I don't have that much coordination on my non dominant hand. Now I have a number pad with arrows that I can connect to my PC and put on my left side, the mouse on the right is fine tho
