Day 6: Forgiving Myself, Gently

Hiiii everyone, I know it’s been a while xD but life got in the way and I’m back now with another part of the Love Month Celebration series, hope this finds you doing well. 🤍

I knowww that I might sound repetitive in each one of these but I will literally keep reminding you that i am sooo proud of you. If you’ve been here through the past few days (all through February so far actually!!) you’ve already done something incredibly brave. You’ve looked inward. You’ve been honest. You’ve questioned beliefs that once felt permanent and some of it may still do but what matters is that you have tried to show up for yourself with more safety and kindness every single time.

However sometimes? when we reach this point, something else quietly surfaces. Regret. Embarrassment. Guilt. Confusion. Anger. Or that heavy feeling of wishing you had known better back then.

Today is for ‘that’ part of you.  Not to reopen wounds. Not to judge your past. Not to re-analyse the would-haves, could-haves or should-haves of the past. Not to question your past choices or awareness.

Buttt to simply help you loosen the grip of blame you may still be holding against yourself.

I feel like this should be common knowledge but let me remind you that the truth is, every version of you made decisions based on what they knew at the time. Based on what they had the strength, awareness, and support to handle in that moment. The situations, the circumstances, the environment, the choices, they were all different back then.

You didn’t have today’s clarity back then. You didn’t have today’s understanding back then. You didn’t have the means and resources (emotional and otherwise) you may have today back then. And that’s *not* your fault.

You were never meant to know everything at once. You were learning in real time. You were choosing with the information you had. You were surviving situations you didn’t fully understand yet.  And holding today’s wisdom against yesterday’s self is not fair.  (Yess, it isn’t!)

There is a version of you in your past who genuinely believed they were doing the best they could. Even if the outcome wasn’t ideal or Even if you wish it had gone differently. Even if you feel embarrassed or disappointed now.

That version of you deserves compassion, not cross-examination or constant scrutiny.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean pretending nothing hurt you. It doesn’t mean excusing harm or skipping accountability.

It means releasing yourself from endless self-punishment and criticism. It means saying, softly but firmly, “I don’t need to keep hurting myself for this.”

Sometimes we hold ourselves hostage to a version of us who was still learning. Still surviving. Still figuring things out without the tools we have now.

You are allowed to outgrow your past without dragging it behind you as proof of your flaws.

You are allowed to become wiser without shaming who you used to be.

You are allowed to feel peace even if everything wasn’t handled perfectly/ or the way you ideally wanted to.

If/  you feel ready, here are a few gentle reflections you can sit with today/ whenever:

❤️‍🩹 What is something I still blame myself for, even though I was doing my best at the time?

❤️‍🩹 What did that version of me need, but didn’t receive? (from myself/ others)

❤️‍🩹 If I could sit beside my past self today, what would I want them to know? (A highly recommended prompt to respond to🫂)

❤️‍🩹 Instead of “Why did I do that?” Or “What could I do better?” can I ask “What was I trying to protect or cope with back then?”

❤️‍🩹 What am I ready to stop punishing myself for?  (Also thiss, super recommended to reflect/ respond)

You don’t have to force forgiveness today. This is not about suddenly being over it or falling under the pretence that your magically all-good/ at peace with it now.

I feel, sometimes forgiveness begins with simply saying, “I see why I was that way.” Or “I see why I did what I did then.” “I understand myself better now.” “I’m allowed to grow beyond that version of me.” Or simply just a “I see me.”

If/ when it feels right, place your hand over your heart and tell yourself: “I forgive myself for not knowing what I know now.”

Not because the past didn’t matter. Or can be forgotten. But because you deserve peace in your present.

You don’t need to carry every past version of yourself like a weight. I know it’s heavy and your heart is already carrying enough.

They were chapters in your life. Not definite life sentences.  And you are allowed to move forward with kindness and grace now.

You are not your worst decision. You are not your most uninformed moment. You are not the version of you that didn’t know better.  You are the person who learned. You are the person who stayed. You are the person who is trying.  And that is someone worth forgiving and worth loving. 🤍

What are you considering to forgive yourself for? 🫂🤍

I'm considering forgiving myself for the breakdown of my marraige. It has been a works in progress since late 2009 and being late diagnosed with ADHD partly explains but doesn't excuse some of the factors. I'll never know if the relationship might of lasted and there is no going back but I am learning to manage my emotions in a more mindful way so onwards and upwards 😄😄

Hey, thank you,  a psychiatrist has referred me for an ADHD assessment but I don't have any doubt about it all. It explains so much of my life, specifically social awkwardness, rejection and choosing isolation as a form of protection not just for me but also people i get close to.

Hope you're good and having read your profile I hope things are setling down for you.

@RunningMachine thank you dear and yes, it's going well till now!! I hope you're also feeling better!! I have those as well, choosing isolation to feel protected... I can understand your situation! Everything will be fine soon!! 💗🫂

Awww 💗

I reflected on the questions. ✏️✨

I don’t think I really have one big thing to forgive myself for, but I still regret not standing up for myself when I had friends that didn’t realise how much they were dragging me down. I’ve distanced myself from them, but they still don’t know how I feel about our “friendship” 😅

Im so glad I came across this.

But what if my past decisions werent about doing my best? They were spiritual lapses. Knowingly choosing sin.

How can I give myself compassion Im not deserving of? Forgiveness yes I can give.

What do you say?

@Creamyyy

I will give you the compassion you most definitely do deserve!

I'm not good with words. I hope someone will come along and do a better job. But. You are human! Allow yourself to be human. To be human is to make mistakes and not to be perfect.

You did something you regret doing. Something you wish you hadn't done. I've got so many of those. Perhaps together we can remember,

It is OK to make mistakes.

@Creamyyy

Hey hey, glad you found the post and I appreciate the honesty in how you’re looking at your past. 💖

I think it’s sooo important to acknowledge what you said about accountability. There are moments in life where we recognise that we made choices we knew weren’t aligned with our values or beliefs at the time. That kind of awareness can feel very heavy because it’s not just regret about the outcome, it’s regret about the decision itself.  But even in spiritual traditions where sin and responsibility are taken seriously, compassion and forgiveness are not meant to be withheld from ourselves forever, I feel.

Accountability is meant to guide us back toward alignment, not keep us trapped in permanent shame or a downward spiral where we turn to endlessly criticise ourselves.

The fact that you can look back now and recognise those moments as lapses already says something important. It means your awareness has grown. Your conscience is active. You are reflecting on who you want to be and what values you want to live by.  People who truly don’t care about their actions rarely pause to examine them this deeply hehe.

Ooof and I hear something very strong in what you said: that you feel you can offer yourself forgiveness, but not compassion. And honestly my friend, that’s an interesting place to be, because when we really think it through? forgiveness itself is already an act of compassion in some form. It means you’re willing to release endless punishment, even if you’re not fully ready to be gentle with yourself yet.

Maybe compassion here doesn’t have to mean excusing the choice or pretending it didn’t matter. Maybe it simply means recognising that you are still a hooman who is capable of learning, changing, and choosing differently now. (In the present)

Adding to it, growth often comes from the very moments we wish we had handled differently. Allowing that thought to surface itself is us shedding a lil bit of that attachment with past and growing into someone different.

I know our moral compass can be the one true guiding light in many situations and that’s why I want to remind you that we allowed to hold both things at once: responsibility for your past, and the hope along with a little grace for the person you are becoming. One does not cancel out the other nor does it undermine the experiences or feelings we had at a particular time in life.

And the fact that you’re reflecting on this so openly tells me that you care deeply about living in alignment with your values now. That in itself is meaningful.  Thank youuu for trusting this space enough to honour something so personal to you and for seeking insight where you found necessary. I always choose to say exactly as I feel about something hehe, it can resonate with some or may be not, it’s okay either way considering we all can look at things differently at times and this one question of yours put so much food for thought in my brain xD truly hoping this helped in someway still.

Much open to hear your thoughts on it! 🤗💖

By the wayyy, as a natural progression to my thread titled on forgiveness, the next post was initially about this same topic xD a little extra focus on compassion and boundaries but you really made me think here and I considered tweaking the content and integrating “accountability” in the blend also. I find this much important for all of us trying to learn to be more gentle with self. While holding enough space for accountability without letting it turn into another battle we fight against ourselves.

Oh gosh.

I feel you wrote this right at me!

I know all this. But I sooooo need the reminder.

Keep being you. And keep being that annoying reminder.

I've been avoiding "positivity" group here on 7 cups for a bit. Just haven't felt up to being a positive. But this is the positivity I need. The recognition that *** happens. That life is rough. That I've made mistakes that I can't handle. But that somehow I'm going to get thru it. And that there are wonderful people like you out there who just

don't

stop

trying to help.

Love you.

i went through the exercise.  I have teenagers who feel the need to guilt me for not being “perfect” in every way and all.  That was the root of my exercise here or the gist of it as I reflect to see if any of their concerns are true.  I don’t think so, but we can look at it more closely and I think time will tell.

What are you considering to forgive yourself for? 🫂🤍

1. Being an awkward person

2. Being rbf is my neutral face

3. Making wrong decisions

4. Doing absurd things when I let my feelings took control of me

5. Thinking too much

6. Not getting enough sleep

7. Getting stuck

8. Losing my temper sometimes

9. Not being a spontaneous person

And the list goes on and on 🙈💖

❤️‍🩹 What is something I still blame myself for, even though I was doing my best at the time?
I still blame myself for staying in something that was hurting me, even though I was trying my best to make it work. I didn’t have the clarity and strength I have now, but I still wish I had walked away sooner.

❤️‍🩹 What did that version of me need, but didn’t receive? (from myself/ others)
She needed consistency, reassurance, and emotional safety. She needed someone who could show up for her and make her feel secure. From myself, she needed to feel heard and protected instead of being ignored.

❤️‍🩹 If I could sit beside my past self today, what would I want them to know? (A highly recommended prompt to respond to🫂)
I would tell her that she did nothing wrong by loving deeply. I would tell her that she is not “too much,” she just gave her heart to someone who couldn’t hold it properly. And one day, she will have the strength to choose herself.

❤️‍🩹 Instead of “Why did I do that?” Or “What could I do better?” Can I ask, “What was I trying to protect or cope with back then?”
I was trying to protect the relationship and hold onto love. I was trying to avoid losing someone I cared about, even if it meant losing parts of myself in the process.

❤️‍🩹 What am I ready to stop punishing myself for? (Also, this is super recommended to reflect/ respond)
I am ready to stop punishing myself for not leaving sooner. I forgive myself for not knowing better and for learning through pain instead of clarity.

❤️‍🩹 What are you considering to forgive yourself for? 🫂🤍
I am choosing to forgive myself for staying, for over-giving, and for ignoring my intuition. I forgive myself for being human, for loving deeply, and for trying my best with the heart I had at the time.
