Confidence. Too little and you'll always be second-guessing yourself, not speaking up for what you need, frozen and indecisive. Too much and you're the know-it-all who really doesn't know it all. No one does.
If not confidence, then my second guess is courage. No one wants to be a cowardly lion, but if you have too much courage, you're likely to get beaten because you failed to consider the danger ahead or the best course of action.
I like all of the answers given so far, but when I read the riddle I thought of fear.
We need a little fear to keep us safe, but too much and we become incapacitated.
