Fighting The Holiday Blues and Re-organizing Depression Group Support Rooms

Thanks to everyone who filled out the Adult Group Member Room Survey! We appreciate everyones responses and feedback and we want to get started on implementing some of the changes you suggested as soon as possible to help continue to foster the supportive and compassionate community we know and love.

Out of almost 200 responses to the survey, 60 of you had suggested we close a room. Out of those 60, 20 of you had mentioned closing one of the three depression rooms. After reviewing your suggestions and the activity in the rooms, weve come up with the following plan:

- As of Tuesday, December 19th, the currently badge-locked Depression Community Room will be closed.

- Depression Support 1 and Depression Support 2 will be renamed to Depression Support and Depression Chat. Both rooms will remain open 24/7, with Depression Support being the designated room for scheduled discussions and Depression Chat being an open lighthearted chat at all times.

- To kick-off these changes, we will be having extra discussions and events in the Depression Support Room on Tuesday, December 19th.

*Updated Discussion Schedule for 12/19*

- 10:00 am EST Depression and The Holdays with @Kate

- 12:00 pm EST Quiz! with @Truth22

- 2:00 pm EST Getting To Know You with @wonderfulpumpkin

- 6:00 pm EST What Is Depression? with @Eccho

- 7:00 pm EST with @BugInArug

We hope that these changes will help the group support rooms continue to be a thriving, active and supportive piece of this community. Please let us know your thoughts and, as always, were here to answer questions and provide support and clarity if needed.

Those are great changes! Although I'm a Teen and my feedback may not be too useful for adults; but, in my opinion, I think the Depression Support room should be closed if there's no discussion taking place, similar to how the teen rooms that are discussion-only remain closed when there's no discussion taking place to allow moderation to be easier smiley Since it's discussion-only, I think depression chat would be enough cheeky

@Emily619 depression rooms was too crowded outside of discussions, it was why they created more rooms.

@Emily619 I think there's enough people on the site looking for support for Depression to warrant a support room being open all the time, especially as we have other support rooms open with little problem.

I would have to go back to the teen list, I'm not sure what you have open all the time for teens.

@Kate

This is an absolutely great idea - I think it will really help to drive focus and build on the community we do love. Having one room specifically for support and another for lighthearted chat in the depression community, I feel, will help not only new members feel less lost but will really foster - as you say - the supportive and brilliant community we are all here for.

I can't wait to host more discussions and kick off the changes on the 19th with the community! <3

Magnesium Fights Depression

Magnesium plays a critical role in brain function and mood, and low levels are linked to an increased risk of depression .

One analysis of over 8,800 people found that those under 65 years of age with the lowest intake had a 22% greater risk of depression .

Some experts believe the low magnesium content of modern food may be the cause of many cases of depression and mental illness .

However, others experts emphasize the need for more research in this area .

Nonetheless, supplementing with it may help reduce symptoms of depression, and in some cases the results can be dramatic .

In a randomized controlled trial of depressed older adults, 450 mg of magnesium improved mood as effectively as an anti-depressant drug .

I started taking it last week to help prevent muscle spasms brought on by anxiety after my brother told me it's been helping him for years.
