All,

As you might know, badges are an integral and key part of our community culture. Badges reflect your journey with the community. Your participation and contributions in the community.

They are a way to recognize and appreciate your efforts and spirit to support the community.

When you earn a badge, it shows your accomplishments and milestones. A way to celebrate all your good work!! They represent the growth path of your journey. Each badge is the representation of a step you took in your journey. Whether it was completing various training, taking tests, completing mock chats, participating in various sections of the community or stepping up to take some additional responsibilities to support the community.

So, here is a checklist of badges you may earn in the group chat rooms just by being a supportive and active participant.

Maybe I'm cynical but I see this as a marketing ploy and it does very little for the majority (in my opinion) for members who may be struggling with overuse of this site. It seems to foster such overuse as good and acceptable. Such overuse actually impedes one attending to real life matters. ... like with any phone app or online game I'm not certain what the advantage is to the company but I'm certain there is one, else why do it? Perhaps you somehow profit from so many clicks or logins directly or indirectly?

As for listeners, I do not know.

@themainjane I appreciate you sharing these thoughts. I have been feeling a little wary of how many badges there are and how... gamified the site can be. Of course, they're pleasant, but there needs to be a balance.

@JaimieF and @themainjane I agree. I've always been wary of the badge-led culture.

The gamification of 7 Cups was discussed in the forum quite a lot around the time I joined. One example from back then that hasn't been deleted yet was @Zedda's: The last post I'll ever make here. I wish you all well. As a result I thought a lot about it, and I came to the conclusion that professionalism as a listener really means ignoring the badges. The core of what I do as a listener is taking general requests, and there are no badges for that anyway.

Overuse of 7 Cups, like anything else, is potentially harmful because 7 Cups comes to compete with real life instead of enhancing real life. I don't think there's any serious business case for encouraging overuse, except maybe to make impressive charts to present to potential buyers.

@JaimieF I like badges. But I stopped caring about them when I found some ridiculous objectives for their achievement.
What has made me somehow "addicted" instead is getting my training completed... but even that addiction is now discouraged with the Leadership training, which apparently may never be displayed as complete on my dashboard not because of me but because of something pending resolution on the site).

@ThankYouForLettingMeTryingToHelp it's an important lesson how to let go. What matters most is our health and wellbeing. If something doesn't feel right there is no point in pressuring ourselves to do it.

Badges can be nice reminders of our journey and they can help to set goals and milestones. It doesn't mean we have to have every single one of them. There are lots of badges that are awarded by simply listening and that's the main purpose of the listener role. That can be gratifying on it's own.

@kindSoul10 Understood. Have you taken a look at My Diary? https://www.7cups.com/forum/GeneralSupport_28/DiaryEntriesConnections_1597/Mydiary_209578/

@themainjane I'm more concerned about the streak ones. I don't use 7cups every day. I think it could be hard for some, especially for long ones like the year.

I AM SO GLAD TO SEE THIS. There was a whole thing about badges in the 7Cups "book." I have issues with the gamification because it gets so silly and keeps people away from the mission of helping people. There can be chats that need answering, why lead people to quizzes about favorite BTS members or ice cream?

Anyway, badges are good, but for longevity and purpose. If you can rise through the ranks in 2 months, does it mean anything?

I find it so natural to embrace and help others by speaking compassionate words. And all these badges achievements really means nothing to me. I lost interest reading what I could achieve because it's harder for me not to show love & encouragement.

So that's why people heart random things and why some listeners join a chat and post basically one word at a time?

@HappyDucky8 that might be why. i figured that posting one word at a time is also just a common and somewhat annoying way of texting these days. :P
