Assertiveness: An Important Skill for Everyday Life

Assertiveness is the ability to express one’s thoughts, feelings and needs openly, honestly and respectfully while considering the rights and feelings of others. It is a healthy balance between being too passive, where others might take advantage of you and aggressive, where you do not consider the emotions and boundaries of others. An assertive person expresses themselves without fear and hostility and acts confidently.

Being assertive builds your self-confidence as you learn to value your own opinions and start standing up for yourself. This way, you can calmly handle the situations that may arise and make choices based on your needs. Better communication skills go hand in hand with assertiveness. When people know where you stand and what you need, misunderstandings are less likely to occur.

Assertiveness also helps in stress reduction. When you hold in your emotions and constantly agree to things you do not want, it can lead to elevated levels of frustration and anxiety. Feel more in control of your life, which leads to less stress. It also encourages healthier relationships, both personal and professional, because respect and mutual grasping are key components of assertiveness. People are more likely to trust and respect you when you speak directly, but they will also appreciate your kindness.

Where do you see yourselves implementing assertiveness in your lives? What are some areas in life where we think we could practice assertiveness a bit more?

@SelfCareMatters

I need more assertiveness to stop always saying yes to things even when it puts my own needs last 💜🥰

I was like that at one time, as well. Then I was in residential treatment for 4 months, and one of the things they taught us was assertiveness. Now I know how to stand my ground without being aggressive about it, and also curbing my passive-aggressive behavior. I noticed that when I assertively placed boundaries with people, at first, some get mad. How dare I not communicate with them?

I got cut off accidentally. In short, assertiveness can't be argued with. You're not a jerk, and you're not a pushover. You're advocating for yourself. :)

I went to see if we had an assertiveness training and we don't! However, this path may be useful and I am going to check it out!

@SelfCareMatters

Assertiveness has always been a hard one for me! I think so many of us are scared of coming across rude, but it's super important to establish your boundaries, so this is something I'm definitely trying to get better at.

I think it's hard for a lot of people who aren't used to standing up for themselves. A lot of the times we give in just to avoid starting an argument. When you are assertive, people know you're serious, but you're being genuine and honest, not angry or hurtful. :)

@SelfCareMatters I think assertiveness is something I need in both my personal life and my work. Sometimes I hold back my feelings or needs to avoid conflict, but I know being honest and respectful will actually help me and my relationships. I want to practice being more assertive in school, group projects, and with my friends, especially when I need help or need to set boundaries. I think it will help me feel more confident, less stressed, and more in control.
