Empathy and Compassion

There are numerous skills that are included into the framework of Inner Development Goals. I would like to note that such skills as empathy and compassion are especially valuable for me since they allow people to make connections, gain new perspectives, and maintain their relations. In today's world where diversity rules, empathy is needed to be able to consider other people's experience and point of view instead of evaluating any situation based on one's preconceptions.

While empathy is about gaining an understanding of other people's feelings, compassion is a desire to help those who need support. I believe that developing empathy and compassion is crucial to building more inclusive societies and enhancing cooperation between people since they will be more willing to collaborate with one another when feeling understood.

However, empathy and compassion do not necessarily have to involve other people only; it is necessary to develop these traits in relation to oneself too. Being compassionate to oneself is a good way to take better care of oneself in various difficult situations.

To me, both empathy and compassion are very strong qualities since they motivate us to take care of others and at the same time not forget to take care of ourselves.

Do you remember any instance when empathy has helped you solve an issue or improve your relationship?

How do you exercise self-compassion in hard times?

I use empathy regularly to solve crisises that develop when people are feeling sad and worried and find they can't relate. 🌲

Yes, empathy always helps me solve issues easily as well as improve my interpersonal relationships. At times, being empathetic has also costly me heavily in a sense that I was taken advantage of by people I empathized with. Therefore, I highly believe that it's also necessary to be aware of those who genuinely need your empathy and not faking a situation, for instance.

How do you exercise self-compassion in hard times?

I practice mindfulness and make sure to indulge in self-care routines like cooking my favorite dish (Biryani), taking myself on a dessert date, applying Vaseline to my heels and dry skin (if any), reading self-help books to calm my nerves, taking a walk into the woods and exercising.

What about you?

In response to your second question, I find self compassion comes through acts of self care for me. Taking the time to sit down, relax, watch something funny, do a face mask and really unwind is a huge act of self compassion for me, it allows for me to show up in my life how I like to e.g. being a compassionate person is a lot easier if you actively practice self compassion - no matter what it looks like to you.

@Architak2007 During hard times I like to go to a quiet place and pray and trust that things will get better.

Empathy has helped me understand other people’s perspectives and avoid misunderstandings. In hard times, I practice self-compassion by accepting my mistakes and reminding myself that it’s okay not to be perfect.
