Hello Leadership Crew!

Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.

To start, please read this post here and watch this video.

The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.

A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.

This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

@blissfulSoul2347 I think that those are really good steps to your system! Do you know how you might adapt even those into specific steps?

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

I think establishing a weekly review on the weekend to reflect on each week along with planning what to do next, and adjust my goals would be a good system to set up to help succeed.

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

Three behaviours which would help:
1 - Put it in my calendar as a recurring event, on the same day and same time each week.
2 - Set out short and simple review questions, e.g. what worked? What didn't? What's the top priority this coming week?
3 - Start with just 10-15 minutes of reviewing to establish a rhythm and develop from there as needed.

@FenrirWolf

That is a great approach to figuring out when and how you will take time to reflect on the week!

1. What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
A key system I need to set up is a daily routine for focus and consistency. Instead of setting big, distant goals, I want to build a structured system that helps me stay productive each day. Though I already have a set schedule, Now it is more organised, like starting with clear morning habits, scheduled deep-work methods/ planning, and regular reflection at night. This system will help me make steady progress instead of relying on short bursts of motivation. Very well suggested!

2. What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

  1. Start small and stay consistent: commit to just one or two tasks at a fixed time each day to build momentum.

  2. Track my habits weekly: use a simple planner (Like, I have created a google planner) to reflect on what worked and where I missed.

  3. Reward progress, not perfection: celebrate small wins to keep myself motivated. More than focussing on the results. It is beautiful.... the path

It's a great idea to set smaller 'closer' goals to keep yourself motivated rather than big distant goals that can make us feel demotivated.

Consistency is key! And the easiest way to stay consistent is to start small and not overload yourself :) Tracking weekly habits is a great way to keep yourself organised and up to date your tasks.

It's so true that we should reward progress rather than perfection as progress is the only way to ever achieve perfection!

I really liked what you shared about focusing on consistent effort instead of just results. It’s inspiring. Keep going, Hope. Every small step you take is shaping something amazing. You’re doing great!
And I must say, it is fun and also making me so good.

A key system to set up in my life to help me succeed is a personal organization and accountability system — one that keeps my goals, habits, and priorities clear and consistent.

Here’s what that system can look like in simple terms:

  1. Goal Tracking System:

    • Set 3–5 clear, realistic goals (short- and long-term).

    • Break each goal into small, trackable steps.

    • Review my progress every week (for example, Monday's) and adjust then when needed.

  2. Time Management Routine:

    • Use a daily or even a weekly planner, digital calendar (on an iPhone, iPad, etc), or app to structure my days.

    • Schedule blocks for focused work, rest, and self-care.

    • Plan the night before so I wake up with clarity.

  3. Accountability Check-Ins:

    • Have a “weekly reset” where I reflect on wins, struggles, and what to improve.

    • Share progress with a trusted friend, mentor, or even a journal.

  4. Emotional Regulation & Self-Care System:

    • Create daily grounding rituals (breathing, journaling, music, walks).

    • Identify triggers and coping tools for stress or burnout.

  5. Decluttering & Simplifying:

    • Keep my physical and digital spaces organized.

    • Remove distractions that don’t align with my goals or peace.

When I have systems like these in place, motivation stops being the only thing driving me — my structure starts carrying me, even on hard days. This leads to a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment as I see my progress and growth.

Here are three key behaviors that I can implement to build and strengthen that new system in my life gradually:

  1. Start with Daily Micro-Habits

    • Begin with one or two tiny, doable steps that feed my system — like writing down my top 3 priorities each morning, or doing a 5-minute reflection before bed. These are what I call 'micro-habits', small actions that are easy to do and can be done consistently, helping me build momentum towards my larger goals. Keep it small on purpose. The goal is consistency, not perfection. Once it feels natural, I can expand.

  2. Create a "Check-In" Ritual

    • Choose one consistent time each week (like Sunday evening or Monday morning) to review my goals, habits, and progress.

    • Ask I asked myself: What worked? What didn't? What needs tweaking?

  3. This keeps me grounded and reassured that the system is flexible — it evolves with me, accommodating my needs and circumstances.

  4. Reward Effort, Not Just Results

    • Celebrate each time I show up for my new system — even if things aren't perfect. This is what I call 'rewarding effort', acknowledging the work I put in, regardless of the outcome. It's a powerful way to motivate myself and reinforce my commitment to my system. Rewards can be small: a nice cup of tea, time to read, or words of self-kindness.

This trains my brain to associate my system with safety and pride, fostering a sense of security and confidence in my journey of self-improvement.

I love the idea of having things other than motivation to drive you! Motivation won't always be there, but habits that keep you disciplined and on top of your goals will! Of course with adjustments for times we may need more self-care and rest.

Micro habits are great! And check-ins too. It can be a bit difficult to self-reflect sometimes, especially if we know something hasn't worked out quite how we hoped. But it's an important step in readjusting our plan so that we can achieve our goals :) And like anything else, the more we do it the easier it becomes! (And of course we will have our habits and discipline to keep us going for when we don't feel like doing it).

I need to be more organized.

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

  1. I  can ensure that my desk stays organized (will also allow me to light candles again so double bonus)
  2. Every day I can work on cleaning up just one thing
  3. I can record my progress in a journal

An organised space and help keep an organised mind as the saying goes! A candle is a wonderful mood enhancer and can be a nice incentive to keep your desk tidy. Working on just one thing a day is a good way to maintain consistency without getting too overwhelmed. I wish you luck!

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

I need to set up a system that holds me accountable to keep moving forward every day. Recently I've felt very off track and unmotivated, and the best thing to do when that happens is to be disciplined and remember that some progress is always better than no progress. Even if it's just doing one thing better than I did yesterday.

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

I can schedule my time better, actually stick to that schedule, and keep my end goal in mind more often for the sake of keeping me on track and reminding me of my "why."

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

I need to set up a daily system to get the things I need to get done in a day while keeping my tech usage to a minimum.

What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

1. Not using technology half an hour to an hour before bedtime and half an hour to an hour after waking up, 2. keeping technology out of the bedroom and bathroom, and 3. keeping my phone on the work desk to act as a home phone instead of something I am carrying around the house.

I love the idea of turning your mobile phone into a "home phone"! Apparently there are apps/ settings or devices that can help do this.
