Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals
Hello Leadership Crew!
Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.
To start, please read this post here and watch this video.
The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.
A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.
This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
I want to have a real study schedule, so that I can have the time for all the things I'm trying to do.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
I can start blocking out time every day to get everything done. I can prioritize. I can delegate tasks to other people if I just can't finish them, and recognize when I'm at my limit so that I can take a step back and do only what I am capable of.

A key system I need to set up in my life is a consistent routine for personal growth and productivity. Having a structured schedule will help me stay organized, manage my responsibilities, and make steady progress toward my goals.
Three behaviors I can implement are:
1. Set aside time each day to plan and prioritize my tasks.
2. Dedicate at least 30 minutes daily to learning or developing a new skill.
3. Review my progress at the end of each week and adjust my routine to stay consistent and improve over time.

That's a good one, mine was similar!

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
One key system I need in my life is having a consistent schedule to follow, especially so with the school year beginning soon.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
I can get a planner and start using it, I can actually work on using the system instead of making it and doing nothing with it, and I can write it down somewhere I see daily to remind me of it.
@auditjay77
I really like the steps you've outlined for your system! Getting organized can be so tricky but I love your idea of putting the planner somewhere where you'll automatically see it everyday! Good luck, you've got this!

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
I'm in the process of setting up a system for my eating habits (less snacking, more food with nutritional value) and exercising more. I'm doing this by making simplifying meal rotations, having nourishing food to hand and driving a different way home to avoid stopping off at a fast food place. For exercise I'm implementing a system of planning my activity for the day, the night before and setting out the equipment/clothes that I need to make it easy to roll out of bed and into movement.

Ah see above. I've already answered this I think.

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
I need to set up a simple, better and consistent routine for working on my professional goals, without putting too much of stress on myself.
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
Spend some time every day or every alternate day working on one priority task.
Break bigger tasks into small, easier and manageable steps.
Assess my progress once a week and make changes wherever necessary.
