Course 1, Discussion 5: 7 Cups Culture

Hello Leadership Crew!

I hope you have been benefitting from this course. This is the last discussion of our course 1.

We take culture seriously on 7 Cups because it is the heart of how we operate. A wise person once said: You teach what you know, but you reproduce who you are. We can have all of the best training content we want, but if our culture is not strong, then we will not be successful in growing a thriving, compassionate, community that will make a global impact.

Every organization has a culture whether by design or by default. When culture (including values and mission are not called out or made explicit, the organization defaults to an implicit or unstated culture. The unnamed culture is not always great for the end users or the community. An example of a common and implicit cultural rule or norm is that the person that makes the most money or the organization is the most important. People that work in this organization then, naturally, because it is the culture, start organizing themselves around ways to make more and more money. The ones at the top of the hierarchy are the ones that make the most money. 7 Cups cares less about money and more about compassion. We call out compassion and celebrate compassionate people because that is central to the work we do.

Please read our guide here to deeply understand our culture. We have made it explicit because we believe it is important to help us all be accountable to what we stand for and believe in. As leaders on 7 Cups, you will be models that emulate our culture and values.

@Hope

1. It's okay to say 'no' sometimes ~ It's something that I was struggling with a lot, but now I feel like I'm doing better.

2. Having positive attitude and mindset can really change how we see world and that way we can truly enjoy every day.

3. Mistakes and failures are there so we can learn from them, it's all okay and part of human life. They teach us how to be a better version of ourselves. Mistakes happen all the time, we just can't let them stop us from who we want to be in life ⭐️

Please highlight the 3 most important things you learned from our guide and why they are important to you.

First, I really got to understand more that I'm solving a problem and doing really important work on 7Cups. I, and many people all over the world, struggled with challenges when we were growing up without having this opportunity. If I can give another youth or adult that privilege, I'd feel so fulfilled and happy because they absolutely deserve it. This is very, very important to me.

Secondly, I learnt that it's okay to not get it in the first try. Failure is okay as long as you're staying focused and putting in the work. It helps us learn what not to do and that increases our knowledge on whatever we're doing. When I fail, I now know to not do that again and to keep trying till I find what works.

Lastly, The problem is the path.

  1. Trust is the foundation of success at 7 Cups. It enables growth, collaboration and the courage to take risks, making it essential for creating a supportive environment.
  2. High Expectations + High Warmth – It’s the perfect mix of pushing for greatness while having each other’s backs. You get the best of both worlds like support and the drive to level up!
  3. Solving Problems That Matter – It's all about tackling the big, real-world problems that make a difference.

Highlighting the 3 most important things I have learned from this guide and why they are important to me:

1. Being accountable: that is something very essential when you are out there working for people on a large scale, because it's easy to skip and blame mistakes on others, but a community that recognizes its duty builds a functional future.

2. The concept of the gas tank- This is an easier way of understanding our abilities and limits, and what can drain the system of its efficiency, so putting proper caution on unacceptable behaviors sounds very effective in controlling possible future damage.

3. Taking care of the caretakers- Because, this is not just about helping those in need but also supporting those who have recovered from their issues and constantly working on their growth and happiness, especially the 7 cups team, from the oldest to the newest listener.

I think to have fun and be fuffilled can sometimes be difficult on an emotional support platform. Although the work is extremely rewarding it is difficult at times to allow myself to enjoy it when I pressure myself. In that same breath, failure is a difficult topic for me and I can really struggle with perfectionism. I think on this platform it has allowed me to make mistakes and to not beat myself up for it so I do appreciate this reminder. Furthermore, the strength based approach where I can showcase what I am really good at is so important.

@globalWillow3000

I really appreciate your honesty and self-reflection. I understand that working on an emotional support platform can be both rewarding and challenging, especially when I put pressure on myself to always do things perfectly. It’s a great reminder that mistakes are part of growth, and I’m learning to embrace them rather than be too hard on myself.

The strength-based approach is also something I value because it allows me to focus on what I’m good at and contribute in a meaningful way. It’s reassuring to know that I don’t have to be perfect to make a difference. Your insights really resonate with me—keep shining, and don’t forget to show yourself the same kindness and compassion you give to others!

Not everyone is a good fit - No need to force yourself upon something that you dont feel like doing. Everyone is suitable for something different and that is all right.

Try Hard - Putting efforts into something fullfilling will always bloom and will return to us. If we decide to do something, we should go fully in it so we dont regret it later.

Have Fun - Most essential thing in life. Do something that makes you feel alive.

1. Failure as a learning opportunity: On 7 Cups, failure isn't something to fear; This is an opportunity to reflect and grow, either by learning from difficulties in conversations or by enhancing your ability to assist others through resilience and determination.

2. Teamwork and personal growth: Teaming up with peers on 7 Cups helps you get better at solving problems, tackling them one step at a time, while growing as a person and a team member. Helping someone succeed is a motivation to take on more challenges and grow.

3. Friendliness and trust: On 7 Cups, it is essential to foster a positive and friendly atmosphere. By establishing trust and providing a platform for individuals to express their thoughts freely, we create a collaborative environment aimed at helping others.

trengths-based approach and the analogy of a "gas tank" for energy, aligning with 7 Cups' leader policies suggests my key system should focus on sustainable expertise development and energy management. This means creating a framework that fuels your passion and prevents burnout, allowing you to become a world-class expert in my field. To implement this, three behaviours are essential: First, establish "Knowledge Fueling Sessions," dedicating specific time blocks for deep learning and skill development in my areas of expertise, ensuring my "gas tank" is consistently replenished with new knowledge.

Second, implement "Energy Conservation Practices," such as mindful breaks, time-blocking to prevent overwork, and setting boundaries to protect my personal time, recognizing that my energy is a finite resource.

Finally, foster "Collaborative Growth Communities," actively participating in or creating spaces where i can share knowledge, receive feedback, and learn from others, leveraging my strengths-based approach to build a supportive network that contributes to your expertise and prevents energy depletion. These behaviours will contribute to a system that cultivates sustainable expertise and aligns with the energy management principles implied by the "gas tank" analogy .@Hope

The 3 most important things I have learned from our guide and why they are important to me.

  • We Expect Failure -  For me this one is very important because its something which I've been working on myself. We all make failures and for a long time, I had trouble accepting my failures.  I'm getting much better at learning to accept failures as learning or lessons and using those to search for a better solution.
  • Take care of yourself - I believe this is super important for everyone and for me a work in progress.  It's more important too me now than it was when I was younger. Now I have health conditions which require me to self care and so I'm working on improving my habits such as healthy eating, exercise and taking time out to relax and recharge.
  • Collaborate - Remembering that no matter what roles I take on here this is a team.  We are not alone and working together is important. Through collaboration with the team we can gain a greater understanding of problems and how to solve them.

I agree with all your points. You mentioned comprehensive points from 7Cups Culture. It's inspiring that you are taking failures as a learning opportunity and finding their solutions.

Failures are little part of leading path towards success, we have to see it in this way....🌸💗

I relate to what you've stated. Embracing failure as a learning process is an important mindset. It's great that you're not just embracing failure but using it to fuel your growth and problem-solving.

To help make it more real, in this post, please highlight the 3 most important things you learned from our guide and why they are important to you.

  • Trust - Like it says here: "Trust allows us to personally grow and it enables 7 Cups to reach its mission. If we do not trust one another, then we will not grow and 7 Cups will not reach its mission." Trust is undoubtedly a key ingredient in both personal growth and the success of 7 Cups' mission. When we trust one another, we create a safe space for learning, vulnerability, and connection. However, growth can also stem from moments of discomfort, critical thinking, and even constructive feedback.
  • Friendliness and Conscientiousness - Like it says here: "We deeply value warmth and friendliness as it dramatically increases trust, which is our superpower. Similarly, we also value conscientiousness because it too increases trust. When a person is conscientious it means you can trust them to work hard, work smart, and get the job done." I agree that warmth, friendliness, and conscientiousness are foundational to trust. Warmth builds a sense of safety and connection, while conscientiousness reassures others that responsibilities will be handled with care and diligence. It’s interesting how these traits complement each other. One builds trust through emotional connection, and the other through reliability and competence.
  • Collaborate - Like it says here: "Helping others problem solve will help you to be more successful at 7 Cups. When you help others, they will be much more likely to return the favor and help you." When you assist other people, it can form the basis of a feeling of trust and community, which can invite people to be helpful in return. Folks generally respond well to people who sit and listen to them, and it is likely that such people are willing to return a favor by being helpful themselves. Such an exchange of giving and receiving can create a condition where all are ensured success together and everyone is highly motivated to work together.
