Course 1, Discussion 5: 7 Cups Culture

Hello Leadership Crew!

I hope you have been benefitting from this course. This is the last discussion of our course 1.

We take culture seriously on 7 Cups because it is the heart of how we operate. A wise person once said: You teach what you know, but you reproduce who you are. We can have all of the best training content we want, but if our culture is not strong, then we will not be successful in growing a thriving, compassionate, community that will make a global impact.

Every organization has a culture whether by design or by default. When culture (including values and mission are not called out or made explicit, the organization defaults to an implicit or unstated culture. The unnamed culture is not always great for the end users or the community. An example of a common and implicit cultural rule or norm is that the person that makes the most money or the organization is the most important. People that work in this organization then, naturally, because it is the culture, start organizing themselves around ways to make more and more money. The ones at the top of the hierarchy are the ones that make the most money. 7 Cups cares less about money and more about compassion. We call out compassion and celebrate compassionate people because that is central to the work we do.

Please read our guide here to deeply understand our culture. We have made it explicit because we believe it is important to help us all be accountable to what we stand for and believe in. As leaders on 7 Cups, you will be models that emulate our culture and values.

1. Collaborating - This guide has mentioned the importance of our personal and professional growth by collaborating.

2. Expect Failure - Expecting failure doesn't make us incompatible but prepared.

3. Taking self-care - Self-care is a crucial part to keep going even in low times.

The 3 most important things I learned from the guide is that we work on trust and have high expecations and high warmth. These are important for me because I want to dedicate my time to something important and in order to do that trust is a must. While high expectations and high warmth will always keep me motivated to keep working and doing my best. Third most important thing for me is to be fulfiled and have fun while having self-efficacy, since doing the work is important but all that work is meaningless if you do not enjoy the process.

Your work saves lives — Every conversation can prevent suicide, help beat addiction, or restore hope. This hits hard because it reminds me the support I give is truly life-changing, not just casual talk. It makes me take the role seriously and show up fully. High expectations + high warmth — Accountability (OKRs, feedback, facing problems) paired with encouragement, patience, and care. I love this balance—it pushes growth without burnout or fear, creating a space where people actually thrive. Trust is everything — It’s the foundation for growth, speed, and mission success. Building it through kindness, reliability, and no drama (no gossip, excuses, or jerks) keeps the community healthy. To me, it’s rare and powerful—trust makes helping others feel safe and fulfilling.

Loved the point you made about trust being the foundation. It really ties in everything together. Without it, none of this would work.

✒️ The guide is testified by my experience here in 7 Cups. It is a platform that cares for its listeners, leader, and members. It has high expectations and a support system that matches that level. It fosters growth, promotes inclusion and safety, among many other things that are just as equally important.

@Hope

I want to help create a culture of kindness and compassion on 7 Cups where everyone feels safe, heard, and respected. I can support this by listening without judgment, responding with empathy, and encouraging people who share their feelings.

The three most important things I learned from the guide are collaboration, trust, and expectations. These three are important to me because collaborating with different members to help problem solve improves critical thinking skills. Building trust within the 7 Cups community reduces fear of judgement, encourages vulnerability, and incorporates a shared common goal. Expectations within the 7 Cups community improves accountability and promotes success.

Three Key Lessons from the 7 Cups Culture Guide

The most important things I learned are:

  1. Trust is the foundation — it creates safety and genuine connection.

  2. High expectations with warmth — accountability feels supportive, not pressuring.

  3. Self‑care is essential — taking care of myself ensures I can show up fully for others.

These lessons matter to me because they remind me that meaningful support comes from honesty, compassion, and balance.

@Hope

The 3 most important things I learned and why they are important to me;

1. Solving problems that matter (instead of chasing perfection) because my profession engages with real, authentic, and messily complex human concerns.

2. High warmth+ high expectations is the kind of balanced space I want to grow in. I believe real growth happens when people feel supported but also challenged.

3. Taking care of yourself is "not optional" in helping and service professions. The idea that you and your health matter just as much as the work really aligns with what I want to practice as a professional.
