Course 2, Discussion 1: Understanding your Leadership Style
Hello everyone,
If you are reading this, it means you have come a long way in your leadership training. Kudos to you for all the effort and resilience you have shown! It is amazing how you all are open to learning and adapting to new environments: the environment of leadership!
Before we zoom in and talk more about learning and adapting, lets zoom back out first and talk about how you feel about leadership. Regardless of how you see yourself, there is a leader within you. The one who visualizes how things could have run in a better way if you were in the leading spot. Leading spot here means:
A desire for change
Believing you got the abilities to make it happen
Visualizing success while keeping in mind the bigger picture.
Lets take a look at the leadership styles as proposed by Daniel Goleman
Picture taken from this source.
Your original style could be any of them. So for the purpose of this course, we are going to use a leadership style test to help you identify your core competencies. In brief, we are using the test here to help you identify your leadership approach. So, when you know how you approach an event, you could think and put efforts to bring a change in it. It will allow you to polish your strengths and focus to improve in other different areas as well.
Let's get started!
- Please take the leadership style test linked HERE.

@Hope I am a coaching leader. This is nice.
@Hope
✒️ Which leadership style did you score the highest for?
I scored the highest for Coaching, Democratic and Affiliative leadership style
✒️ Do you agree with this quiz?
I agree but to some extent. I encourage a clear long-term vision and inspiring people to shared goals, but I scored less for the Visionary style. And I feel I need to develop crisis resolution skills and identifying times when immediate action needs to be taken, there I scored more than expected in the Commanding style.
@resilience2025
Insightful!
@Hope
My style in leadership is visionary
I guess I do agree with the test
I scored highest for affiliative and pacesetting (both 35/35)
Pacesetting: "do as i do now" (results-driven style where leaders set high performance standards and lead by example, expecting their teams to match their pace and quality)
- (+): good for short-term results but detrimental in long run, emphasize self-regulation, clearly communicated requirements
- (-): may cause fatigue & burn-out in the long run. Usually no feedback given, low trust
Affiliative: "people come first" (people-focused management style that emphasizes emotional bonds, harmony and team cohesion within an organization)
- (+): strong people focus + moral compass, good communication and high level of flexibility + trust,
- (-): may neglect goals/ tasks for relationships (cares too much about others feelings?
It's interesting because these 2 styles seem opposite, but I think that's advantageous because they will ultimately complement each other well. What I need to improve based on this (and I agree):
- Don't avoid giving constructive feedback
- Don't micromanage (learn to delegate + trust)
- Be aware of burnout in both myself and others
"The more styles a leader exhibits, the better" so I can keep both these styles as part of my 'leadership system' and also work on understanding and adopting the other styles.
@awesomeForever34
Wow, I love how detailed and in-depth your response is!
It's funny - I also feel like I had a few conflicting results but you made an excellent point in recognizing that the traits can absolutely work together to make a stronger, more effective leader.
Thank you for sharing your results and how you received and interpreted them! It helps me better understand my own results 💜
