Course 2, Discussion 3: High Expectations and High Warmth

Congrats! You made it the second course in the LDP! In this course, we focus on the specific interpersonal skills needed to be a strong leader on 7 Cups, including mastery of communication skills, time management, conflict resolution, stress management and empowering new leaders.

I know if you are here, you have read our values and culture guide. I would like to start off by further emphasizing one value that's required for a leader to be successful here, and that is balancing High Expectations & High Warmth.

Work environments with high expectations and minimal warmth tend to result in companies that are very driven, rule-oriented and risk-averse. The people do not tend to grow as much personally or professionally. On the other hand, workplaces that are high in warmth, but have minimal expectations, tend to struggle. Everyone is happy and feels loved, but not a lot of effective or focused work gets done.

7 Cups is high expectations AND high warmth. We expect a lot from you. You might feel like we think you are more capable than other people have suggested or maybe even more capable than how you see yourself. That is okay. Every person on the team has outperformed and done better than they expected. This is largely because warmth, patience, and trust help people make much more progress than they have in other environments. We have high expectations, but we will provide plenty of encouragement and guidance to help you get there.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

An imbalance of expectations and warmth leads to teams being unproductive, too little warmth and you become unapproachable and people won’t talk to you. Too few expectations and your team may not reach the goals they need to, to help the community.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

1.) Little warmth can lead to members feeling like Listeners don't actually care and may lead to some feeling like we talk very robotically. This would make us less approachable, and

2.) Low expectations can lead to Listeners to become complacent, and not continue to improve their skills. No warmth would also impede communications, likely leading to more communication issues.

These are great insights! I agree that refraining from sounding robotic & refraining from becoming complacent are important!

Having an imbalance of expectations and warmth can make me an ineffective leader,

How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

1) Having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, can impact the community, in that members become hesitant to seeking help and support, when struggling.

@FrenchToast✒️ If, as a 7 Cups leader, there is an imbalance between expectations and warmth, potential repercussions may arise.

✒️ In the scenario of having excessively low expectations or insufficient warmth, it can have dual effects:

1. **Impact on the Community:**
A deficiency in expectations might lead to a lack of standards, potentially resulting in diminished community engagement and quality of interactions. Conversely, insufficient warmth may create an unwelcoming atmosphere, hindering the establishment of trust and support among community members. Striking the right balance is crucial for fostering a positive and constructive environment where individuals feel both challenged and supported.

2. **Impact on Collaborative Dynamics with Fellow Leaders:**
Insufficient expectations among leaders could result in a lack of accountability and motivation, potentially affecting the overall effectiveness of the leadership team. Similarly, a shortage of warmth might strain interpersonal relationships, hindering effective communication and collaboration. Maintaining a balance in expectations and warmth is essential for promoting a cohesive and collaborative leadership environment, fostering mutual respect and shared commitment.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

if i have an imbalance of expectations and warmth as a 7 Cups leader, i believe that i would become emotionally drained and i might develop health complications and symptoms due to stress.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

having too low of expectations in the community would result in people not getting the attention and/or help that they need and deserve. if there was too little warmth in the community, i believe that this would lead to conflict and tension between listeners, members, leaders and participants. if there are too low of expectations and too little warmth with regards to working with my fellow leaders, this too would lead to conflict, negativity and stress related issues.

@FrenchToast

What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

Having an imbalance of expectations could be extremely unfair to your team. The first thing to comes to mind is person A gets 8 tasks to do within a week where person B gets 3 tasks to do in a week. All tasks are at the same level of work however that would not be a fair work load to person A nor would it be fair to person B as they would not be working to their full potential.

For warmth having an imbalance in that two things come to mind. 1) you are only giving some of the folks the warmth they deserve and not paying attention to some folks. 2) you are not giving anyone warmth.  Both are unfair to the team warmth is an extremely important part to help focus succeed and everyone should be given the right tools to help them succeed

How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

1) I think it will impact the community negativity . It will make people feel less welcome and make people feel like they are not doing a good enough job

2) I think it will leave a lasting impact that is neg to them as well, but it will make an impact on the way they view us as a leader. It might make them feel unnoticed and like they are not good enough. It will also strain the relationships out between leaders, and that is something is not good as well.

@FrenchToast

If there is an imbalance of expectations and warmth, it can lead to several potential consequences for a 7 Cups leader such as

  • The leader may feel overwhelmed, stressed, or unsupported.
  • While the leader may feel appreciated and comfortable, the lack of challenging expectations might hinder personal and professional growth.
  • The community members may feel pressured, stressed, or unsupported. This could create a tense environment, impacting their mental well-being and diminishing the sense of community support that 7 Cups aims to provide.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

If I was to have high expectations and no warmth I would not be approachable and that would make my team feel unsafe, uncomfortable, and unhappy. And it would lead to a negative experience for everyone.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

If cups has low expectations and low warmth there wouldn't be any structure because people wouldn't care and it would be very laid back. Without warmth we'd have 0 members because how would people recognize the leaders from the members if each person is unmotivated. There wouldn't be a point in being an emotional support for the members. If there's no structure or warmth then why would we be here?

If I had low expectations myself I wouldn't be dependable nor depended on to be accountable. No one would know that I was a leader.

@FrenchToast 1) If there is an imbalance of expectations and warmth it can make people either feel not appreciated or valued or that they do not need to do much to grow and develop or for the company

@FrenchToast I guess if I felt an imbalance of warmth and expectations I would not be inspired to work to the best of my ability

Having low warmth and expectations might affect the community making it a community that does not feel loved, valued or accepted and is only working to achieve goals.  I imagine it soul result in less satisfaction, underachieving and not an environment that encourages growth

It would also affect how leaders get on together because they might not feel supported, valued or have a good relationship with others
