Course 2, Discussion 4: The problem is the path
Hello LDP Team!
The problem is the path is the core insight that helps us evolve as individuals and as a community here on 7 Cups.
Here is an overview of this course:
Course Description: It is natural for us to want to avoid problems. Problems can cause worry, anxiety, and frustration. These are feelings that we often want to avoid. Problems, however, are the key to growth. When we face our problems directly we get smarter and grow stronger. A saying that captures this is: Progress = Pain + Reflection. This course helps you learn the value of problems by highlighting the difference between problems you might be concerned about and problems you can directly solve. Next, it walks you through the ancient practice of steering into problems directly in order to unlock their value and gifts. Finally, it helps you identify and measure progress so you can make continued gains in your personal and professional life.

Further Reading (Optional but recommended):
This idea of problem is the path is a reoccurring theme in self help books and especially stoicism. If you are interested in learning more about this thought process, we recommend the following books:

Watch the following video and identify 3 things in your circle of concern, 3 things in your circle of influence, and 1 thing you can do to remind yourself to focus on your circle of influence.
Circle of Concern:
Other people’s opinions of me.
Global or national events (like politics or the economy).
The way others handle their emotions or behavior.
Circle of Influence:
How I respond to stressful situations.
The efforts I put into personal growth or healing.
The way I communicate my needs and boundaries.
One thing I can do to stay focused on my circle of influence:
Keep a small reminder note that says, “Focus on what I can control.” Place it where I’ll see it often—like on my phone screen, mirror, or notebook—to bring my attention back to my own actions and mindset.
Next, watch the following video and highlight what stands out to you about this executive? What did they do that would be considered proactive as opposed to reactive?
What stands out about this is their remarkable foresight, their ability to anticipate challenges and take initiative before problems arise. Instead of waiting for issues to escalate, they actively sought solutions, planned, and made strategic decisions that positioned their team or company for success.
The proactive approach would be to focus on prevention and preparation, and to make the team feel secure and prepared.
For example, setting clear goals, communicating expectations early, and implementing improvements before they become urgent. In contrast, a reactive approach would have meant responding only after problems arose, rather than guiding events through foresight and planning.
@ScorpiaD
How we respond to stressful situations is definitely within our circle of influence! It can be applied to all and any situation in our "circle of concern" so I think it's a fantastic thing to keep in mind that our response is within our influence. No matter what the situation or our concern, we can control how we react!
✒️ Watch the following video and identify 3 things in your circle of concern, 3 things in your circle of influence, and 1 thing you can do to remind yourself to focus on your circle of influence.
3 things in my circle of concern:
- Anxiety
- Some people treat me bad
- Avoid so many things
3 things in my influence:
- I can work on what I hold
- My wisdom
- My exercises
1 thing I remind myself to focus on the circle of influence is an alarm
✒️ Next, watch the following video and highlight what stands out to you about this executive? What did they do that would be considered proactive as opposed to reactive?
_The character starts to empathize with the company, government...
_I think his proactivity is setting an example for himself, and everyone can see it

✒️ Watch the following video and identify 3 things in your circle of concern, 3 things in your circle of influence, and 1 thing you can do to remind yourself to focus on your circle of influence.
Circle of Concern:
-
Negative events happening around the world
-
What others think of me
-
How people treat one another
Circle of Influence:
-
Choosing to treat others with kindness and respect
-
Owning up to and learning from my mistakes
-
Creating habits and systems that help me reach my goals
One thing I can do:
I can remind myself that my energy is best spent on the things I can actually control — and the more I focus there, the more that circle will grow, just like in the video ♡
✒️ Next, watch the following video and highlight what stands out to you about this executive? What did they do that would be considered proactive as opposed to reactive?
What stood out to me about the executive was how he focused on his circle of influence instead of blaming others. He put his effort into improving what he could do rather than stressing over his boss’s behavior. Because of that, his attitude and results improved, and eventually his influence expanded too.
@RyanListen I really appreciate your answer; it's very well thought out! Having 'what others think of me' in your Circle of Concern is a really good perspective, and you're totally right. We can't change other people in any way, but we can always adapt ourselves.
@FrenchToast
✒️ Watch the following video and identify 3 things in your circle of concern, 3 things in your circle of influence, and 1 thing you can do to remind yourself to focus on your circle of influence.
CoC:
- Global conflicts such as the ones going on in Ukraine, Sudan, and Palestine
- The fact that there are people living in unsupportive environments outside of my reach
- Data centers and AI destroying the Earth
CoI:
- The stress I feel from all of the homework I get
- My friends are feeling extremely overwhelmed at the moment
- My partner for Speech and Debate is not putting any effort into our categories.
To focus more on my Circle of Influence, I just need to ask myself what I can do to make a difference and if there is truly no way for me to make a meaningful contribution, I'll know it's outside of my influence for now and that I should let it go for the time being.
✒️ Next, watch the following video and highlight what stands out to you about this executive? What did they do that would be considered proactive as opposed to reactive?
Instead of joining in the complaints about his boss, he works to adapt to his boss' unique skillset, of which everyone has their own. He got himself involved in business and worked to anticipate his boss' decisions so as to be prepared with a good response/solution.
@Hedgehogs83
"Global conflicts such as the ones going on in Ukraine, Sudan, and Palestine" that was definitely something that crossed my mind as a concern as well! You're very compassionate to think of that first.
@SelfCareMatters yes i've thought so too!

✒️ Watch the following video and identify 3 things in your circle of concern, 3 things in your circle of influence, and 1 thing you can do to remind yourself to focus on your circle of influence.
Circle of concern: What people think of me, court case, broken spreadsheet I can't fix
Circle of Influence: Responsibility, integrity, patience
I know the Serenity Prayer. I accept the things I cannot change and have the courage to change the things I can. :)
✒️ Next, watch the following video and highlight what stands out to you about this executive? What did they do that would be considered proactive as opposed to reactive?
Instead of getting mad at his boss for taking over the meeting, he paid attention to what his boss was saying. Instead of engaging in gossip, he instead went after improving his job. He talked with his co-workers, and looked like he was engaged in group activities. People were looking at him differently. This was very proactive. Getting mad and gossiping is reactive.

✒️ Next, watch the following video and highlight what stands out to you about this executive? What did they do that would be considered proactive as opposed to reactive?
Reactive: Being authoritative and imposing one's beliefs and opinions on others, believing them to be more authentic than others and criticizing them for their faults.
Proactive: Being creative, prudent, and shrewd among one's circle of influence. Not criticizing others, but being tolerant and empathetic.

@BobbieX
I really appreciated your reflection; it shows a lot of thought and self-awareness. The way you connected expectations and warmth to leadership was inspiring, and it reminded me how important balance is in building a strong community. Keep up the great work; your perspective motivates me to keep improving, too.
