Course 3, Discussion 4: One Key Metric

User Profile: FrenchToast

It is pretty easy to get knocked off track in life. One way to stay on track is to have a core metric that guides you. If you have a north star that you are working towards, then you know how well you are doing. It is harder to be in denial or to participate in activities that are less helpful in meeting that goal.

Please watch this video

There are 2 parts to this discussion.

✒️ Work with your team or mentor and identify the key metric you are hoping to help move. Post daily (or the cadence that makes sense) in the 3 key things thread to highlight what you are doing to help us move 7 Cups forward. Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well.

✒️ (TW: themes that deal with death) Read chapter 12 of our Searching Soul book and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you. What you imagine them telling you is your compass. If you are acting in a way that is consistent with what they are saying, then it is very likely that you will end up living a meaningful life. Remember to listen to and follow this compass so as not to be distracted by the clock.

@FrenchToast

Focusing on one key metric is important because it gives clarity and direction. When a team has multiple competing goals, energy gets scattered. But if everyone rallies around one measurable outcome, progress becomes visible and motivating.

  • Professionally: It teaches discipline and keeps you accountable.

  • Personally: It builds focus and resilience. Choosing one metric in life helps you avoid being overwhelmed and measure growth meaningfully.

It’s about creating alignment between effort and impact.

@FrenchToast

When I imagine the end of my life, I hope people will say:

  • “She lived with integrity and compassion.”

  • “She gave her knowledge freely and helped others find clarity.”

  • “She balanced ambition with kindness, and left people feeling stronger after knowing her.”

This exercise is powerful because it strips away distractions. It reminds me that the true compass isn’t deadlines or metrics. It helps me re-centre on meaning rather than just productivity.

I agree that meaning is a powerful thing to have in what we do. It makes meeting deadlines less of a chore. Very powerful insight!

- The three key metrics I pointed out in the above thread were aimed at helping 7 Cups grow and thrive as a community. This involves becoming a listener and taking on the role of reaching out to hundreds of members daily by helping those with mental health challenges. I have also contributed by earning eighty eight different badges by successfully completing courses and training dealing with different personality disorders and enrolling into the Leadership Course Program and 7 Cups Internship program. Reaching theses goal are important part of my everyday life as I use those skills at my workplace and on 7 Cups.

  • The goal of choosing a single metric is important because it minimizes distraction and keeps things focused for long-term growth. The NS metric will help my personal goals turn into measurable and effective steps. I applied for roles in group support and safety teams. My one key metric is ensuring adherence to the respective teams' guidelines. Done posting @ 3 key things thread!

  • "I miss her terribly but the life she lived was always true to her values so I know that she was content and happy. She made me feel so every single day. If there's one thing she might be sad about right now, it's that she can no longer have Dan Eric's cheese ice cream. She fed me a lot of cheese ice cream. I'm grateful for the ways she protected me in this world. She believed in me the most. I've seen her grow from when we met when she was in ninth grade. She'd always been a loyal kid. She helped me a lot during my bad times. She was always careful with her work and she pressured herself a lot to be great at what she loves to do. She said every action impacts a person and always wanted every impact to everyone from anyone to be good. She helped a lot of people."
  • I'm not sure if I would call it strange that writing down the exercise made me feel content and happy. There are blurry faces for now but I do hope I live up to this!

As a new leader, I’m just learning how to work in the safety team. The key metric is maintaining the 100% flag accuracy. A single metric matters because it gives admins the high-quality reports that they need. For my personal life, this is important because it prevents me of being overwhelmed and it makes progress measurable. It keeps the work steady and motivation high :)

@FrenchToast

Focusing on one key metric is important because it keeps me grounded. Professionally, it helps me build consistency and purpose in my role- especially in a space like 7cups where it's easy to get overwhelmed by volume. It pushes me to think about quality of support rather than showing up. Personally it helps me stay aligned with my own values. Having a north star makes me more aware of how I'm spending my time and energy.

At the end of my life, I imagine people saying that I made them feel seen, safe, and understood. That I was someone they could come to without fear of judgment. I hope they would say that I listened deeply, cared genuinely, and showed up for them in ways that mattered especially during difficult moments. I also imagine them saying that I followed what felt meaningful to me, even when it wasn’t the easiest path. That I stayed true to my values, chose compassion over ego, and tried to make even a small difference in people’s lives. Maybe they’d say that I helped others feel a little less alone.

Doing this exercise felt grounding but also a bit confronting. It made me realize that what I want to be remembered for isn’t tied to achievements or titles, but to how I made people feel. It reminded me that the small, everyday interactions matter more than I sometimes think.

The key metric I am hoping to help move is to help everyone feel welcomed. I also wish to join the Welcoming Commitee, and help make everyone feel welcomed and accepted. I can measure my metric by counting the number of people I have welcomed.

I do want to share the exercise. I would like the people around me to have felt valued and loved by me. They felt I was like a confidante they could trust with anything and I was good at heart, doing the right thing whether people noticed or not. I made an impact, small or big.

@gentlemelon85

Aww 😊!! I really liked reading your reflectionhere

Your goal of helping everyone feel welcomed is meaningful because even small acts of kindness can make people feel seen and accepted ( I've experienced it myself in the past, a smal genuine compassion created a huge impact over me honestly and brought me up to the place where I am now 😊 )  I also think it’s great that you want to join the Welcoming Committee, since your intention to create a safe and comfortable space for others already shows strong compassion and empathy <3

I Appreciate You a Lot 🤗

Your response to the life exercise was especially touching either :) Wanting people to remember you as someone trustworthy, caring, and genuine says a lot about your character. I liked the line about doing the right thing even when nobody notices, because that reflects true kindness and integrity <3

No matter how big or small the impact is, making others feel valued and loved can leave a lasting difference in their lives for real 😊.

You're awesome, buddy 😊!

@FrenchToast Focusing on a single key metric is important because it provides clarity and direction, helping me stay consistent and intentional in my efforts. In a professional setting, it ensures that my actions align with meaningful goals and allows me to track real progress instead of getting distracted by less impactful tasks. Personally, it helps me stay disciplined and mindful of how I spend my time and energy, keeping me aligned with what truly matters.

At the end of my life, I imagine people saying that I was kind, supportive, and made a genuine difference in others’ lives. I would want them to remember me as someone who listened without judgment, helped others feel less alone, and stayed strong through challenges. This exercise made me reflect on how important it is to live with purpose and authenticity, and to make choices that align with the kind of person I want to be remembered as.

Yayy! you're reflection just touched me 😊.

Like I really connected with your reflection, especially your point about focusing on a single key metric. I agree that having one clear focus helps create consistency and prevents distractions from less meaningful tasks. I also liked how you connected it to personal discipline and intentional living ( that's fantastic 🤗 )

Your final reflection was powerful too ^_^ Wanting to be remembered as someone kind, supportive, and genuine says a lot about your character <3

I think listening without judgment and helping others feel less alone can leave a lasting impact on people’s lives your response shows a strong sense of self-awareness and purpose 🤗

Yayy!! I honestly wanted to mention it here 😊, I reallyyy liked this discussion o((*^▽^*))o because it felt very meaningful and reflective rather than just instructional. It made me think more deeply about the kind of person I want to become and what truly matters to me in life. I also liked the idea of having a "compass" instead of constantly feeling distracted or lost, because it reminded me that small actions and values shape our life over time 😊

I just wanted to keep it simple here ^_^

Here i go 🤗,

So One key metric I want to focus on in 7 Cups is helping create a positive, supportive, and emotionally safe environment through my forum's supporter role in the Positivity & Gratitude and Religion & Spirituality sub-communities. I want to spread kindness, empathy, compassion, nd emotional support while helping people feel seen and less alone <3

This goal is important to me because someone in this community once supported me during difficult moments, and it made a meaningful impact on me :) Now, I want to give that same support and kindness back to others. And it also kinda selfish. because more than everything else, i personally liked doing to to our community xD 😅

I think choosing one meaningful goal is important because it helps me stay focused and intentional instead of feeling distracted or overwhelmed :) Professionally, it helps me stay consistent and improve my communication, leadership, and support skills <3 Personally, it helps me grow into a more patient, understanding, and emotionally balanced person ❤️

My favorite part of this discussion is this 🤗.

( I think I’ve already kind of related to this question through the Way of River series slide (/^-^(^ ^*)/ )

So the second exercise made me reflect deeply about the kind of person I want to become :) I realized that I don’t really care abt fame or recognition after death xD but I do care about whether I lived meaningfully and stayed true to myself 😊.

I would want people to remember me as someone kind, wise, understanding, deep, empathatic and comforting to others :) More importantly, I want to feel peaceful n satisfied with the way I lived my life instead of feeling full of regret or emptiness.

This exercise reminded me that the small ways we others and live according to our values are what truly matter in the end to me 😊.

the small ways we treat others*

@AiluraTheCat,

I genuinely loved reading your response 😊 It felt very heartfelt, thoughtful, and emotionally honest. I especially liked how you said that someone once supported you during your difficult moments and now you want to give that same kindness back to others ❤️ That is honestly such a beautiful reason to help people.

Your thoughts about wanting to live meaningfully instead of chasing fame or recognition were also very deep and mature. I think the qualities you mentioned — kindness, empathy, understanding, and emotional comfort — already reflect strongly in the way you express yourself 🤗

Also, your line about wanting to feel peaceful and satisfied with the way you lived your life really stayed with me. That is such a meaningful compass to follow 😊
