Thank you for this post pam!
Sometimes when many things happen at the same time it can feel harder to stay mindful so I focus on my breath, it becomes my anchor to the now. Deep breathing helps me to calm my nervous system. Mindfulness has helped me in many ways like learning to become more aware of my inner world, my thoughts and also to become more patient with myself and others.

Listen to music, write it down, talk to someone you trust if you have anyone who is that trustworthy in your life, exercise, take a little nap, spend time with friends, or do some other activity like house work such as cleaning.
All this will help you take your mind off of the things that mindfulness would have helped you with if it wasn’t difficult. But when it is, the activities mentioned above can help.
I believe to practice this we can just see what our 5 senses are experiencing at present moment. Check what you are seeing, what you are hearing, who is next to you, what taste are you experiencing, what frangegnce/smell is there and what your skin is feeling like .
This will help you to come back to present in just a moment of time and then take 2 deep long breaths and you will feel the difference.

Ground with the senses is very effective and using fragrance can be very powerful!

I think one of the things that can make mindfulness hard for others is that they may have formed unrealistic expectations on what mindfulness can do for them. It tends to be a practice that a LOT of people, including professionals, talk up as being so beneficial as to be almost life-changing all the time. While that can be the case for some people, the way that you utilize mindfulness really plays a part in its usefulness. And if you expect mindfulness to do things for you such as making a problem go away or thinking it will bring you immediate relief from stress and anxiety, it's not going to work well.
Sorry for getting on my soap box there. I used to be very skeptical about the use of mindfulness but do now think it's a good idea when you use it as a tool rather than a "treatment". I still think that sometimes mindfulness gets talked up so much that people can accidentally think it's some miracle cure for their problems. Focusing on the present moment isn't always beneficial. Sometimes you do need to focus on the problem or goal at hand.
To answer your questions, I think the hardest time I have with focusing on the present moment is when my anxiety is so high that nothing can bring it back down other than taking a walk. I can try "interrupting" all I want, try those grounding techniques, try visualization, it doesn't work. Sometimes I just need to walk away if I can and come back later. Mindfulness has sometimes helped keep me from ruminating on negative thoughts.
