Neutral Mind
“Not how long, but how well you have lived is the main thing.” — Seneca
Do you think you could teach yourself to have a neutral mind and what would be the benefit of having it?

@amiablePeace77 Great question. I am always working toward a neutral mind. I have small glimmers of it. I believe a neutral mind removes judgement from our thoughts. How great is that??!!
@yzzil
That's a fact, @yzzil. Thanks for adding that point here. A mindset without any prejudices is the greatest asset to have.
By neutral mind do you mean like being more stoic? For example, not reacting emotionally to certain situations that might bring up lots of emotion?
If that's the case, I think being able to have that ability would be very important. For instance, it can keep you from overreacting or from making rash decisions based on overwhelming emotion. It can also encourage better self-control.
@cafedaydreams
A neutral mind strives for balance and objectivity so it prevents overreacting or rash decisions. Good point about better self control.
@cafedaydreams
Great point there and thanks for reminding us about Stoicism.
Essentially having a pause between the trigger & response/reaction helps handle a lot of chaos. That way the mind doesn't feel burnt out or stressed.
For me, having a neutral mind is something I struggle with a lot. But I also am grateful for when I am strong with it, because I feel less complicated and it seems the situation, especially a difficult one, is better because I had a neutral mind. It is a lot of practice and takes good amounts of mindfulness. I feel like I can only appreciate the times I achieve this and be compassionate about the times I was not willing to. Allowing myself to be just as I am in my moment is important too even if it is to be affected because of my experiences I have had.
@TropicalMaple3
Nice that you show yourself that kind for compassion when not adapting a neutral mind. You are right in saying it takes practise and lots of mindfulness. The neutral mind is also called the meditative mind by some people.
@TropicalMaple3
Glad to know that you understand the power of being in the moment. That's exactly what mindfulness is for :)
Thank you so much.
@TropicalMaple3
Cheers :)
I’m so happy to still be learning so much and able to get helpful insight here about things that I particularly pay interest to. Thank you for being informative.
Define neutral mind please. New to this community…
@Njorun1338
Hi there and welcome to our community Njorun
.
The neutral mind acts as a scale, balancing information from both positive and negative minds, before making any decisions. The neutral mind is calm, centered, and precise. It is also called the meditative mind, so the practise of mindfulness meditation with strengthen it.
Okay, thank you so much for clarifying that. You know, without knowing what it’s called before, I do basically try to do that, bring the positive in when I’m feeling negative and consider the red flags or concerns when I’m feeling positive. Happy to have a word for it now. I do think I need to work even more on cultivating this, but it’s definitely beneficial I think. Not being too negative keeps you from self-sabotaging or accepting bad situations as something that can’t be made better, and not being too positive keeps you from making wasteful mistakes or failing to be compassionate to those going through a hard time.
@amiablePeace77
I have extremes of emotions, leaning greatly to the negative side, most of the time. It's difficult to regulate your emotions on your own when suffering from a mood disorder. But I have noticed that no matter what the condition of my mind, it rarely affects my decisions and judgement. So I suppose I can transition into the neutral mind, or not give in to my positive or negative emotions, while decision making. At other times, I am at the mercy of my emotions.
@FuzzyHugsX0X0
Sorry to hear that you're struggling with mood regulation. Being on an emotional roller coaster whilst having to face daily challenges is tough. I hope that coming here and practising mindfulness will help you to gain more emotional stability. This is a self help guide for managing emotions https://www.7cups.com/help-managing-emotions/
@FuzzyHugsX0X0
Sorry to hear that. Managing can become overwhelming at times and is something which we understand. I recommend checking this link: 7cups.com/help-managing-emotions

Hope you feel better :)
I feel having neutral centered mind is most liberating feeling. It means that I am aware of everything around me including positive as well as negative but nothing is affecting me. I am practicing to reach that state of mind more often and for longer period of time.
