Stress and Unhealthy Eating

Hello guys laugh

We all know the scenario, little time, lots of things have to be done at home and yeah, there is the shopping still to be done too.

So we rush into the supermarket, grab a few things we need and then we pass the aisle with chips, sweets and chocolates. Before we realize it a bag of chips or something else is in our trolley. How come? surprise It was even not on the list but something in our mind tells us to fight the stress with chips. Hm, we move on. Same thing happens the following week and the next one. We created a bad habit without realizing we did! It just seems to have happened automatically or not??? Maybe deep inside we learned that stress and chips go together or stress and sweets? It is totally okay to have a treat but is it okay to have a treat every time we feel stressed and what are we training our brain how to handle stress in this way?

I understand this and I still struggle with it!! Except my bad habits come from highly fattening foods

@Zulegirl

It's easy to fall into the trap of pizza, cheese or chips, to name just a few particularly when they feel so good at that moment to beat any kind of frustration or sadness and hard to get used to lower-fat-alternatives. I remember when I did the "change" (no added sugar for example), it was very hard but now I am profiting a lot from it in many ways.

@Zulegirl

Hi, I am very sorry to reply only now. Yes, of course you can message me, I would love to support you but atm I am not able to take any chats because of my current schedule. Withstanding all the "sweet" temptations we are exposed to every single day in shops, maybe at work or even at home is difficult and can be also very frustrating. It takes a lot to go through it but I realized that lots of problems like e.g. candida just disappeared on their own. Again, very sorry for the late reply.

@amiablePeace77 I found that it helped to change one thing at a time. It is easier to start habits by not changing everything at once. I could change the pizza to whole wheat flour and the toppings to many veggies. Make the pizza a treat rather than a staple.

Also I like pancakes but getting too many carbs so I did a recipe with 3 egg whites (all protein) and reduced the flour so I get the protein and less carbs. https://www.7cups.com/forum/50OverCommunity_193/WellnessinBodyandMind_1703/Shareyourrecipeshere_214486/

@soulsings

Nice ideas. It's tough to change everything in one go so getting into it gradually can be a good way. I also still bake pizza but just a treat like you mentioned.

@amiablePeace77 I try to eat slowly and focus on the food. Also give thanks to all the people who grew the food, made the food, transported the food, sold it. It is truly an incredible act of giving.

Awesome soul, focussing on the food and the other things you mentioned like the people who produced it, creates awareness and to me more valuation of what I eat instead of eating quickly and unconsciously.

@amiablePeace77 For me once in a while is okay. But making it a habit is not really good. Stress eating can cause serious health problems like diabetes, high cholesterol and too much preservatives in sweets and junk food. I admit that I am a culprit for stress eating. But I try to control it. I drink tea, read a book, walk in the park, watch a movie to relieve my stress. :)

@Jewelmoon17

Those are much healthier alternatives, glad you can manage it this way. How we eat (calm or stressed) impacts highly how the body deals with the food like you stated - cholesterol for example.

Well mine's more like mindless eating AND stress eating. But I restrict my urges with busying myself and taking small amounts. The life im the world with unhealthy but more convenient junk food

@AddictedTealover98

I believe mindless and stress eating are very commun these days, distraction and small amounts are good ways to deal with it, also the ways how soulsings eats (see post above) - eating mindfully. When I go into a shop I am kind of sad to see how big the aisles with junk food are and how small with healthy alternatives, this is a good indicator to me of how strong healthy thinking in a society is.

Hello friend

I am not sure I do that with food but it does make me reflect on other crutches I use in dealing with stress. Something that I should think about more. Because they do and can become vices or substitutes for unhealthy habits.

Thanks for the thought-provoking questions.

@scarletPear1945

I agree, it's not just only about food it's about much more, about how we deal with challenges in general in life and what healthy ways we learned to cope.

@amiablePeace77 I think I am in an even worse place than that. I have been avoiding grocery shopping altogether and instead filling my days with constant fast food and convenience store junk food. I don't want to be this way but I am too tired or too overwhelmed to get out of bed most days to even do the bare minimum and grocery shopping and cooking were one of the first things I cut out of my routine. I don't want to spend all this time in bed, I want to be in a better place, but I don't know how to regain the motivation. I don't want to keep eating so unhealthy. I hate myself as soon as I pull into the drive thru, while I'm eating it, and long after I finish.

@SecretlyMe

It sounds like a kind of inner war is taken place in your mind, on the one side knowing that life can be so much better when eating healthy and on the other side trying to cope with all the challenges, the stress and the massive temptations of getting a fast meal without having to spend any more energy on cooking it because you might be already tired. I think the worst is the guilt cycle and that must pull you down and might even make you feel bad about yourself. It's tough but the reward is immense in my opinion. The brain starts working better, less anxiety to mention just 2 advantages. Here are some links I find very helpful:

That's so true. Stress eating is so common nowadays and it does feel like we are training our mind to think that it needs sugary or high-fat foods. The effects of sugary "comfort foods" do push me towards over-eating when feeling stressed or even bored tbh. I always regret eating all that sugar afterwards though..🍰🍧

@VickyP I hear you and my gut really suffers from too much sugar.

User Profile: amiablePeace77
amiablePeace77 OP February 2nd, 2020

@VickyP

Stress eating cancels all the after-joy, the nice memory of having enjoyed a good piece of cake for example but what is left is the memory of guilt.When I am stressed I like to chew on something, chewing gum helps (in moderation), carrots (also sweet) or apples and oranges.

Is there any fruit or vegetable you like a lot and can eat instead?
