Mindfulness Daily Check In April 18, 2018
(oops sorry I'm late)

Hi wonderful community
Sorry I'm late for my check in- the wind was so strong knocked internet out for awhile. So today I'd like to chat on "Bringing Joy To Your Table" Yes food after all does bring joy to ouyr tummies right
Do you put the needs of others before your own? Would you rather please others than express your own emotions and wants? Do you believe that putting yourself first is an act of selfishness? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then food generosity practice could be valuable for learning how to be generous to yourself. Generosity is an important aspect of creating a healthy relationship with food, as well as being an essential part of mindfulness. Practicing generosity is especially useful for sensitive people with food issues who find it difficult to express emotionsand who give too much to others while neglecting their own needs.
We think of giving as an act that we do for another person. But the fact is that generosity begins with oneself. If you have ever been on an airplane, then you are familiar with the safety drill that the flight attendants give before the plane takes off. When demonstrating how to use the oxygen masks, the attendants tell passengers to put their own masks on first, and only then to help children with their masks. The point here is clear: There are times when you need to take care of your own well-being and health in order to help and give to others.
Lets practice this together.......
Appreciate meal prep. Instead of rushing your meal or eating convenience food on the run, you can take the time to prepare a healthful meal. By choosing nourishing foods and allowing your body to receive it with thankfulness and acceptance, you are generously giving to all of your body: the heart, the bones, the lungs, the muscles, the brain, and more.
Acknowledge the self-care. You could say that eating is the ultimate form of giving because it enables you to have the energy to help others.
Take a moment to really taste. You can also practice generosity by allowing yourself to truly appreciate, enjoy and savor food by slowly and mindfully tasting and chewing it.
Ask for help. Another positive way to offer self-generosity is by asking for assistance from others, whether for developing a meal plan, working with a professional, or getting help managing food portions and exercise. When you ask for help, you are allowing another to share and give in return.
Share the bounty. One last way of being generous with food involves sharing food as a resource with others. This could be expressed in such ways as inviting someone to dinner who would enjoy companionship, sharing or making food for someone who is sick or in need, or volunteering for a food bank or other food organization. This does not mean that you have to give until it hurts, but that everyone has worthwhile gifts to share.

So happy you're still here, I feared there wasn't going to be a check-in today
Luckily it was just the internet that was the cause, and even though it's such a bother, it isn't something more serious. I'm happy there's still a check-in today!
Also, funny thing is, the subject of today is actually something I've already worked on. Lately, for a month now or so I think, I've been helping my mom prepare food. Not every day, sometimes I'm home late, but whenever I can I do. It's a lot of fun because I'm bonding with my mom and I'm learning some new cooking skills
After a couple of evenings cooking with my mom, I've come to notice that I was looking forward to the evenings. I always felt good after I prepared a meal I got to eat, proud even. Especially when my little brother complimented the food, and specified that it was a compliment for the both of us. Makes me really happy
So yeah, awesome check-in and really good advise. Better late then never, as they say. Thanks for checking-in!
@JayTheBird14
aawww Jay Im happy to see you to
Yes internet went out due to weather, but I made it and wouldn't miss out with this wonderful community! Oh wow how exciting for you to join your mom when you can and learn some cooking stuff, as well as bonding time with mum. That is mindful of you. And sometimes spending time with mum is very special. Yes cooking can really be mindful as well as empowering to self. I am happy for you that cooking has you enjoying the evening times and also the family eats and likes it
@RumpleSteeleSkin - thank you for persisting and sorry you had dat naughty wind.

Fooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood (aaaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuwwwwww Homer moment) :D
As a Southerner.... food is a complicated subject. It's about comfort, it's about heart, it's about heritage, it's about history, it's about family and friends, it's about community, it's about passion, it's about love and it's a mighty powerful tool in the arsenal of hospitality. Food has started feuds, food has healed hurts, food can make a difference in a day or someone's life -- seriously, food for a Southern is an extension of emotions and an act of kindness. You might even go as far as saying "Food is a way of life in the South" and "The South believes in the need to feed".
There is a recipe... I've seen it everywhere in the South including newspaper holiday cookbooks, on kitchen walls, in school cookbooks >>
Recipe for Happiness:
2 cups of love
1 cup of friendship
1 cup of gratitude
Add a dash of laughter
Pour into each others soul
Author: unknown
How to explain this.... The way I grew up - these were the intentions you cooked every meal with. You were conscience of how you felt and what you thought because you imbued it into the food as you were preparing it. People could/can feel the love you put into a meal and not just the effort. It was like the mood, the thought flowed into you as you enjoyed each bite.
Does this make sense to anyone else???
@diplomaticconfucious
Hey there! I really like your response and I feel the same. Food is really important. And the love and heart you put into food really does matter.
I also like that recipe for happiness a lot! I think links extremely well with your post and what you are saying. I know a lot of people that feel the same as you, and cooking like that is only truly honest. Thank you for sharing your thoughts :)
@diplomaticconfucious

FOOOOOOOOOOF AAAWWWWWWWWWW
I do know about the "Sounth" as well as the big thing around food. I do agree with you on food is joy,food is healing, food is love, food is the healer and so much. Everyone works so so hard on gathering things and making it such a big thing-it is. I have this recipe on a magnet on my frig was given to me by a good friend and I love it!! You explained it well. As cooking in the South it was mindful and was all about pleasing another through food. Love this and thank you for sharing it
@RumpleSteeleSkin
Oh you big huggable elephant.... " Everyone works so so hard on gathering things and making it such a big thing-it is. "
You made me think of a story I hadn't thought of in ages, and it involves quite a bit of mindfulness, kindness, generosity, sharing and thinking beyond ourselves.

I hope you all get a chance to pause and enjoy this little reading of the Stone Soup book. There are tons of versions of this tale, in all kinds of settings, in all kinds of cultures, with all kinds of people but pretty much the same lessons.
@diplomaticconfucious
thanks for this lovely video. I believe there is no more joy we can experience when we can give and make others happy, seeing smiles on their faces.
@diplomaticconfucious this is why I refuse to cook when Im angry.
@Longing4peace
Do you find when you are angry or feeling down -- that's when it burns, bubbles over, sticks and just ends up yech?
Or again... is that just me?

@RumpleSteeleSkin

As for the burnt brownies I guess it's the first time making them lol
My mood is so very much tied up with what I eat.
Meal planning and buying good food on the grocery shop helps to make better decisions when I dont feel like it
@Longing4peace
Teach me the way of meal planning.....
I've not had much luck with it
@diplomaticconfucious the goal is to have a ‘plan of what meals youre going to eat for the week. You work out what ingredients you need for those meals and write a list. When you go to the store you buy whats on the list. This is supposed to stop you going into a shop and getting overwhelmed and buying junk food. Ever spent a fortune on groceries and then had no actual food to cook dinner with? I know I have. Many times ;)
@Longing4peace
Thanks... Weekly shopping... something I don't do.
Bi-weekly even tri-weekly... this may be my problem - our grocery options are limited and I'm even finding some of those don't have the best food practices going on - so I skip them. But it's mostly when I don't have the money - I don't go to the store, so I have basic pantry items I keep replenished (beans, potatoes, cheese, my gluten free donuts
). I did get a digital countdown crockpot in hopes of set and forget dinners that Christmas. Yep, right now it sits on the counter and I say forget about it.
Thanks again!
@diplomaticconfucious you can do a potato bake in the crock pot
@RumpleSteeleSkin
Food/cooking is like art to me, like an adventure, a journey into the jungle of spices, nuts, seeds and vegetables of all kinds.
Preparing different healthy small dishes of different cuisines for a nice relaxing eve gives me relaxation and exitement at the same time. Knowing after the meal that i enjoyed the different flavours but also did something healthy for my body makes me feel very good.
I just had this sent to me... and I had to share it.... sorry if I offend anybody... but so recognize this
