Mindfulness Daily Check-In August 2, 2019

Happy Friday wonderful Mindfulness Community
Developing a healthy sense of humor can help you improve your self-esteem, especially if you learn to make light of life, and give up taking yourself so seriously. If someone makes a joke that is unintentionally hurtful, laugh. If someone makes a joke that is meant to be hurtful and humiliating, just laugh. Dont receive that energy. I know this is not an easy task but I believe that with practise we can program our minds to filter out the negativity to a great extend.
Chances are, everyone else will be surprised by your reaction, and those who tried to humiliate you will not bother next time. Moreover, not giving them the satisfaction of seeing how much you dislike the joke, or how much it hurts you, will help your self-esteem thrive.
Would love to hear your opinion about this.

@amiablePeace77
Agree :)
@amiablePeace77
When I think about "receiving the energy" of something that is cruel (jokes intended to harm in this example) I wonder what receiving that energy looks like. I'm a little worried about laughing at stuff that's intended to humiliate and hurt. Could you say a little more about why this is a good approach?
@charmingZebra4754
Zebra, I find that when I take this negative energy my thoughts change to the negative too, I might start to self-doubt, have doubts in general, feel low, insecure. Laughing about it changes the way I process the words spoken, takes away the severeness. I would not do it all the time but only when it's the safest reaction (sometimes speaking up can cause a fight). Also I do want that my brain keeps associating laughter with feeling good, but sometimes this practise can disarm others very well.
@amiablePeace77
Peace, I
I would love to learn ways to deflect traumatic conflict rather than experience that confusion within the organization and experience of my thoughts. I'm hesitant to try to train my brain to reorganize the understanding that laughter = pleasure or happiness, though. I don't necessarily believe that laughter does = pleasure/happiness, but there are a great many social indicators that I think many of us learn that train us to comprehend laughter as pleasure/happiness. I wonder what I would be taking on to reorganize those responses and social cues so that I could interact in a positive way. It seems like an important time not to reinforce cruel and harmful intentions, so I want to be careful not to do that as I care for and tend boundaries.
@amiablePeace77 I tend to follow your advice and laugh at family jokes even if I am not sure they are still funny. I think it is not an info sharing time but a feeling sharing time. I do not see those humor times come up enough so laugh whenever you can as long as it is not harming someone in the room you are laughing. I can straighten it out in my mind later.
There have been lots of times when I've had certain unfriendly people I work with make fun of me. Sometimes it is by making remarks about me to other people when I walk by. But there are lots of other ways. I know that I am different from them. But to do what you said does help. It doesn't make it stop hurting all at once--especialy if you go and think about it after you laugh at it. But if you can keep laughing at it it may help. And definitely not "receive the energy" of it. Thanks for this thread
@BitterSweet250
BitterSweet, people often only find out how much things hurt when they walk in your shoes. We are all different in our ways, some visibly some in a non visible way, it does not make us less beautiful inside.
I always found it great thinking back of the moments people did hurtful jokes and I laughed or smiled and saw their confused faces. That made me laugh and stopped them too, maybe not all but at least some.
@amiablePeace77 thank you for this great check in
I love being humorous or funny or silly. At times this helps another even myself when things are rough. A bit of humor is great medicine I say
@RumpleSteeleSkin
Rumple, it's okay to be silly sometimes, it's even "more okay" in rough times, takes the severeness a bit away.
(my silly face)
@amiablePeace77 I agree hun
Well said Ami
