Mindfulness Daily Check-In March 15, 2019

Hello everyone in the beautiful mindfulness community🧡.

This Friday I like to share with you a short story I read which made me think deeply. Would be nice to hear what you think about it.

"A horse suddenly came galloping quickly down the road. It seemed as though the man had somewhere important to go.

Another man, who was standing alongside the road, shouted, "Where are you going?" and the man on the horse replied,

"I don't know! Ask the horse!"

Explanation: This is a short but well-known Zen story with a powerful meaning behind it. The horse symbolizes our habit energy. The story explains the way we usually live, at the mercy of our old habit energies which have been established not by our intentional actions, but by our surroundings and mindless activity.

It is easy to do things out of habit. one of my habits that I'd like to modify is the need to eat at specfic times during the day - whether or not I'm hungry. I think this habit leads to me eating more than i need.

@MissPen

Pen, I see what you mean, eating when not hungry does not make sense to me, though having fixed meal times can have advantages, but again not if you are not hungry.

@amiablePeace77 that is a wonderful story! I love it. It describes how the thought "horse" can take over and take us where it will.

@soulsings

thanks soul. sometimes we got to check whether we need to tame the horse or even whether we are sitting on the wrong one. :)

Ami, I love your check-ins! They help me to consider things in a way that I haven't before and I am always discovering something new. I read your post yesterday and have been thinking about what the story means for me. The story of the man on the horse is really meaningful to me. I am the man on that horse but I'm happy to say that I've gained some control over the direction that I'm headed now (still practicing)- but for a long time that horse was the one taking the lead. Before I understood the importance of mindfulness, I felt out of control of my emotions. Everything else around me (the horse) was in charge of how I felt and reacted. The more I practice mindfulness, the more understanding I feel about my emotions and I have greater strength in recognizing and controlling how I respond.

@OneTraveler

I am very thankful for your kind and wise words and that you are benefitting from mindfulness. It's truly a miracle pill to me. To me mindfulness seems the only way to tame our "horses" , it might take time and practise, but we can and reach our destination in a safe way. Being controlled by our emotions is a very hard and unpleasant way to live.

I guess I was the rider on that horse and, yes indeed it took me to a place unknown and I had to find my way back. A great lesson learned.heart

Forget to add a story about a group of frog to yesterday's post. A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, when two of them fell into a deep pit. All the other frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep it was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead.
The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit with all of their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. She fell down and died.
The other frog continued to jump as hard as she could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at her to stop the pain and just die. She began jumping even harder and finally made it out. When she got out, the other frogs said, "Did you not hear us?" The frog explained to them that she was deaf - she thought they were encouraging her to jump out of the hole the entire time.
