Mindfulness Daily Check-In- Thursday, June 21
Hello everyone! Welcome to the Mindfulness Check-in. I hope you're doing well.

Today I want to focus and discuss about - Taking Rest.
What do we understand by taking rest?
Relaxing. Refraining oneself to take part in any activity, Sleeping.
But too often when taking rest, one not taking rest. Because your body might be in rest position but mind? It still engaged. You might have noticed even after going to bed, your mind is thinking about what happened today and about tomorrow.
Though you resting, mind is actively running with different thoughts. It is not allowing you to take a sound rest.
So, when you rest, your mind too rest with body. To do this, you need to feed your mind that it needs rest too.
Focus on how your body is feeling. Start with head followed by face and rest part of the body. You can say sort of screening the body.
Focus on it and be mindful of how you're feeling. Feel the relaxation.
It will put your mind in rest mode and you'll have a good rest and sleep. After rest, you will be energetic and active with body and mind.
Please share your thoughts about it. And, what thoughts you experience while taking rest?

I usually underestimate the power of doing a body scan to relax, but it always leaves me in what feels like a relaxed puddle. Putting my mind to think about how I am feeling *right now* forces me to become present and tears me away from trying to think of the past or the future. It gives me a sense of calm and deep relaxation as I realize just how comfortable my body is at that very moment.
@Raindrops00
Body scan is very helpful to me too, it allows me to really feel tension in the body i might not have realized whilst walking around.
@ASilentObserver Hi Obs!
How are you doing today? I hope you are having a wonderful week so far!
Please share your thoughts about it. And, what thoughts you experience while taking rest?
I think that this is so great! I always struggle with allowing my mind to rest as there is always so much that I have to do, and so I'm always thinking of what to do next and how. Doing this definitely helped me feel more relax, and now I'm going to nap!
@ASilentObserver
Good post Obs. Good to see you.
Checking in within a body scan is a plus when you are restless for a myriad of reasons - including over-thinking. Checking your body out - aches, pains, position, respiration, and so on - the mindfulness helps to untie the physical knots, undo the body origami, and if you truly fall into the rhythm of your breathing and just focus on it - it can open the door to peace that one needs. It may not always be the key to a sound sleep - but it can help identify something that you are cognitive of but is disturbing you so it can be addressed.
Reminds me of Michael Sealey (https://youtu.be/1vx8iUvfyCY) for "detaching".
I hope this is the kind of thing that people are supposed to post on here, please let me know if it isnt. Im new here.
Something that I heard from an amazing therapist with a YouTube channel (Kati Morton, her work is amazing!) that really struck me was this:
Normal people will often start their days with about ten poker chips. These chips can be used to handle difficult situations, stressful conversations, emergencies, etcetera. As this goes on and the chips deplete, their emotional bank takes a little more of a hit with each struggle - but they can still function mostly normally. If they use all ten in one day, then their emotional bank will be completely empty and they may have break-downs or experience intense anger, sadness, and emotional turmoil when the smallest things occur.
When people have mental illnesses, they often will start their day with no chips at all, causing the smallest things to possibly push them over the edge. They might wonder why, what happened? How did this little thing set me off? I havent been through that much lately. but maybe they started their day at zero.
No matter where you are, its important to recognize the things that you are going through. Its important to keep inventory of your chips so that you can better know how to allow yourself to heal and replenish as much as you can.
What things do you do to evaluate where your chips are? How do you replenish your emotional bank?
@MidnightSunlight23
Hi Sunlight, this is a great post. I find this is too little recognized that people with mental illnesses often do not have the reserves others have to start and get them through the day.
What things do you do to evaluate where your chips are? How do you replenish your emotional bank?
Usually a quick body scan helps me, i do it in the morning when i wake up and then another time or twice during the day. One of the best things to replenish my emotional bank is (after meditation) just do something i like, sitting outside reading, watching a movie or something similar to get a light and clear head.
@ASilentObserver
Hi Obs
, I really like your thoughts about resting and screening the body to find out where tension has been accumulated.
@ASilentObserver I love doing body scans where I focus my attention on the head, chest, arms, torso, legs, feet. It helps if I breath deeply when I am aware of that part. And I try to put the thoughts on hold until I finish the scan.
Thanks for sharing this.
