A Ball Can Change the World: What's your spark?
A Ball Can Change the World: What's your spark?
in collaboration with @SoulfullyAButterfly
Sometimes change begins in the most unexpected ways, and I want to share a story where the path was not easy but small steps went a long way
It's a story of a simple sports teacher from a small town and with an extraordinary vision. In the late 1990s, he noticed a group of children playing football with a broken plastic bottle in the rain. That small moment lit a spark in him. He realized that something as simple as a ball could steer children away from drugs, violence, and hopelessness toward teamwork, discipline, and purpose.
In 2001, using his retirement money, he founded Slum Soccer, an organization that uses football to uplift underprivileged youth across his country. What started as a few kids playing in the slums of a town has now grown into a national movement, helping thousands transform their lives. Many young players have represented the country in international tournaments, proving that your birthplace doesn’t define your destiny.
Just like those children found purpose through play, each of us can find a spark that helps us rise above our own challenges - whether it’s addiction, unhealthy habits, or the weight of hopelessness.
The message is clear and powerful: Change doesn’t always begin with money, power, or privilege — it begins with compassion and belief. When one person decides to act, even a ball can become an instrument of change.
If a retired teacher could transform lives with nothing but kindness, vision, and a game, imagine what you can do with the opportunities in your hands today.
I would love to hear about your experiences
Have you ever experienced a spark (a moment, person, or experience) that made you want to change something in your life?
What kind of support or encouragement helps you move toward that change - or away from something that’s been hurting you? How can you use 7 Cups to help?
Thank you so much 🙏 @SoulfullyAButterfly for making significant contribution through you constant guidance and support for the post. Thank you for putting the soul in the content 🦋 😊

Thank you so much for sharing such a powerful story. What kept me strong was the support and love of my parents. My father hadn't much but worked hard his whole life and he made a great life for us, he's an inspiration. 💕💜

Hello @Amanda84. It's so beautiful to know about your father. I can understand your feeling as my father also worked really hard in his life and get his family a better live. And I relate to you a lot. 🤍
Thank you so much for sharing your inspiration. It really touched 💙
My 🤎 😊 for your father
@TowardsTheR8Intent
Thank you 💕
He has taught me to be humble, grounded and appreciative of what you have, but never look down on anyone else 🥰
That was a great lesson to have @Amanda84 💞. Thank you for sharing some bits of his learning. Those are the real treasures of life 💛
Really grateful of your father for giving us an humble and generous human being like you 😊
@Amanda84
I could say that you make them proud every single day with your humble kindness here. :)
@Sirpi
Thank you so much, this is so nice of you to say 💜
@Amanda84 I think for me growing up as I did although my life had endured years of being abused by my step father and ex---my entire life was not 100% bad. I have been fortunate to be in a few different environments where I witnessed how people treat each other with mine coming to how I got treated very young by teens due to my seizures over to my irish mom over to my classmates and people within my neighborhood. What it taught me was never ever look down or judge another person. What we might see on the outside may not be who or what they really are. They could be struggling with things we have no clue About or they may have more or less than me its no room to judge anyone. As my mom would say we are all the same in the sense of we all have feelings we all bleed the same color blood we are at the end of the day all Gods children and if we dont Wanna to be judged then its not our place to judge anyone either.
@eternalHero77 Hey there! Saying thank you wouldn't be enough for sharing a gist of your story. I could feel the long dark nights which you have gone through all by yourself. But I also observed one amazing thing, that is your username. It suits you actually. You have been a born hero and eternal to the heart of people you come across.
Even after going through all those things, your message include and concluded with positivity and hope. Hope for a better future and belief that there will be someone with you always just like your mom 😇. Thank you for igniting the spark ✨ through your words. 🤍
@TowardsTheR8Intent Thank you so much.
@TowardsTheR8Intent great work in posting this article and working really hard on ensuring the core message gets delivered while everyone can participate and discuss this essential bit of life. It was a pleasure working with you on this piece.
Sparks are tiny moments and experiences in our lives that impact us in profound ways, but sometimes we may not realize it.
7 Cups became my spark when I moved to my current country and did not find people aligned to my interests. It was a community that gave me the space to learn, grow, and then pour into it - just like how you and many others take a leap so that we can all benefit!
In other life moments, my spark was the hard realization that attitude and mindset is key. And so to answer your second question: self-accountability helps. We can begin to reflect what habits and skills we want to develop and then personally assess our progress. Having a community like 7 Cups to also support us in executing those goals is always a power plus
I am grateful for all sparks in life. the hard ones, the ones that show that humanity and kindness exist, the encouragement, the random creativity and what not.
I am confident your post will help us look for our sparks and celebrate/learn from them together
Hey @SoulfullyAButterfly! Without you the piece would have never completed. 😊
There's few things to say after reading your reply. First of all, THANK YOU for not losing your kindness when you didn't get the people aligned with your interests. I know it is really tough. And then to come from there with the strong mindset and showering so much Empathy in the community and beyond is truly encouraging 🤍
And I can totally agree with on the accountability part 👍. Self-realization Without getting ourselves is a beautiful process so make us progress.
Again, thank you for sharing your spark 😊. I can relate to it to an extend.
Lastly, I would like to say with pride that you are actually one of spark of this community. Even this post is came from that. Actually it's you who initiated the spark and you please keep creating those sparks in all of us 💜 Good luck 😊💞
This story took place in the late 1990's. This person has already worked enough to retire by then. The teacher used retirement money to do this, so it does in fact take money, power, or privilege to set something like this up. It's just as easy for people with money, power, or privilege to get it shut down, like calling the cops on the marginalized youth playing basketball under the assumption that criminality is essential to them, which happens a lot.
Nowadays, nobody will be able to afford to retire and social safety nets won't be there to help. 7Cups may in the future be forced legislatively to censor all discussion of society being anything other than this unquestionable just thing where those on top are superior and the rest have some essentialized negative trait which makes them subhuman and deserving of their fate, and punishments for those who disagree with this.
It may take more than a ball this time around.
I'm not sure what sparks me. I don't see things typically addressed beyond the surface level, as people are being abducted and put in concentration camps and disappearing. Maybe I'm a pessimist for wanting people to care about that.
The example was soccer, but it's not the game per se, but the assumptions of the people playing. It's very easy for people with money, power, and privilege to change the rules of society to shut such efforts down. Happens all the time.
Hello @Zeraphim! I hope you're doing well! I know it's really hard to live within that constant power and money superiority battles. I have been in that position. And that's the very time we need and value the spark to keep us motivated to survive or live.
The challenges are hard and I truly believe that there's no time bigger than this to stick by each other and show compassion to each other 💕
Hello! I felt the spark when i started taking poetry writing more seriously and showing it to ppl. It took huge amount of courage but i did it with the help of my wodnerful teacher! Sadly we only got one semester together, then my hs finished...
It felt so immersive and awesome, i felt more alive then i have ever did!!!
Sending love to allð¥°
@TowardsTheR8Intent Thank you for the beautiful story of hope💖 and for making this post 💖
The kindness of strangers were my first big spark💖 they taught me love, appreciation, a whole new world 💖 and 7 cups was my second big spark, 7 cups has given me a voice, taught me so many things including empathy and patients, and that life is beautiful 💗
@TowardsTheR8Intent
Hey R8, thank you so much for sharing a great post with an inspiring story.
Your honesty is the first thing I notice in this post through your credit sharing. People may get inspired by someone or get help from someone but sometimes they choose not to mention that. I really respect that you didn't choose that method. We are all in a community and working with each other is a way. :). Thank you for that great lesson here R8.
The story you shared is short but the message that conveys is deep. It shows us how important even a small change or support is.
You asked us the question; to answer that, I did have such a strong support and attention from my few family members and middle schoolteachers even though it was not a private school. Even if we don't have anything much, the education and the knowledge can lift us to another level. That's what I learnt from them. I could say that was my spark which I still hold on to.
The second question, being open to feedback, and continuous learning are the things that helps me to move towards the change.
The second part of the second question, :) this community is the place where we can create that spark for someone knowingly or unknowingly. This community is place where we can also learn and grow as a group not only as an individual.
Thank you so much once again for such a lovely post R8!
Hey @Sirpi! First of all it was so sweet of you to say those words. It means a lot 💜
Thank you so much for sharing your spark and to answer the questions so beautifully. I can personally say that you carry your learnings on stride. And you are really wonderful human being and so glad the support 🤍. Though it was few but I know it was meaningful for you.
I am agreement with your answers to a large extent. It was so amazing so see your answers. Your words shows how sincere, humble and genuine you are 😊😊. Wish you good luck to carry it forward 💞
@TowardsTheR8Intent
This is a powerful thread and topic for us to reflect on and thank you for posting this! I think it is beautiful and so much positive change can happen when we are brought closer to our meaning and purpose.
For me, my spark is intention setting and it’s not let me down since I started! I have been doing yoga for around ten years now and it’s where I learned that even on the tough days, returning to my mat helps me feel grounded and centred. I’ve met life long friends doing yoga too and it’s changed my life. It helps me to see more clarity and become more focused whilst focusing on mindfulness and overall health.
I think social connection is so vital for us to flourish and one that note, yoga and 7 Cups have so much in common!

“The Spark That Found Me” 🌙✨
Sometimes, the universe doesn’t shout your wake-up call — it whispers it. It hides inside the smallest moments — a word that lingers, a glance that comforts, a lesson that quietly rewires your heart.
My spark didn’t arrive like lightning. It came softly, through people who believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. Through my teachers who saw potential in my silence. Through my family, who gave love even when life gave us little else. That’s when I realized — you don’t need everything to begin. You just need one reason not to give up.
There was a time I thought I had to wait for life to get easier before I could change. But the truth? Change doesn’t wait for perfect timing — it starts the moment you decide you’re tired of feeling stuck. That tiny decision, that quiet “enough”, is the spark that rebuilds your entire world.
What keeps me going now isn’t loud motivation — it’s soft reminders. Kind people. Honest words. The gentle push that says, “You’re not broken, you’re becoming.”
And that’s why I love this community. 💙
Because here, sparks are shared — sometimes through stories, sometimes through silence. You never know when your words might be the light someone else was praying for.
Thank you @thoughtfulSail5983. It was beautiful to know your spark and the story. Your writing mesmerized me and left me speechless. I can't express in words how beautiful it was to read your reply. 🤎
I feel so connected to it and it touched me somewhere deep and will stay with me for quite sometime I believe 😊. So Thank you so much for 🧡
@TowardsTheR8Intent Very motivational story and a true massage ! Really we all grow from challenges, how can we understand the value of light if there is no dark and there's always a light of hope awaiting for us . Wish everyone recover their challenges , walk along with hope and become successful in achieving all their goals .
My partner has made me spark up change in my life. I knew that nothing was wrong with me but that doesn't mean there's nothing to improve. He made me realise that there are things I can improve on, not just for him (even though he will benefit from it) but for my growth. I always communicate with him about whatever I'm working on, and he supports me and holds me accountable 🫶🏽.
