7 Cups 10th Birthday (Day 2): Your Work Saves Lives!

Hi everyone! I hope you are doing well. In honor of our 7 Cups birthday, we will be reflecting on our 7 values. You will see posts surrounding the values we hold dear. The goal is for us to reflect and reconnect with these core values and engage in discussion.

Today’s theme is ‘Your work saves lives’. It is the first value from our 7 Cups values!

It is human nature that we want our work to matter. Our time and energy are limited. We naturally want to dedicate it where it matters most. At 7 Cups no matter what your focus is, the base of your participation/contribution especially as listeners is helping others/supporting them through their tough times. The time you spend here, the work you do makes an impact.

The next time you log in and start to do your thing! Just take a moment to reflect on the purpose of your work. While listeners make a more obvious impact, you can still make an impact as members, even if all you do is work on yourself!

Being mindful of this value helps us make the right focus choices on 7 Cups and to feel a sense of fulfillment and purpose.

I understand that our community is humble and I love that about us. So I will not be asking you to reflect directly on your roles as I don’t want to make you uncomfortable! Instead, we can reflect on the work of others and help each other realize the importance of their contributions.

  1. Think of any role on 7 Cups. How does that role make a positive impact on our community or as a whole? (Example of roles, Listener, member, mentor, academy graduate, mod etc)

  2. Can you share with us a moment you felt supported/were helped by someone in the community? What was their role and what did they do that made the impact? (Feel free to avoid names and specific details)

I look forward to your answers!!

Well, I honestly think that all the roles are value and important for the Community. Because I have to focus my answer in one role, I would say that the Room Supporter role have made a great positive impact, specifically in 7 Cups' chatrooms because you can make activities, you can talk with the members openly, the members are more receptive, we have fun when we do games... Definitely, is amazing.

Because I'm listener, I have access to the Listener Chatroom, when I was a Newbie, I had lots of doubts, not now fortunalety. There was always a Chatroom Mentor that answered all my questions with pleasure and education. That's why they made a wonderful impact.

Listener chatrooms are definitely a great place to learn about the different opportunities available at our site.

I am writing from my Listener account, but I would like to say that it is the Members who come here to share who are saving their own lives by reaching out for help. Members take a risk every time they share something vulnerable about themselves, some emotion that is frowned upon to explore by society, some dilemma that is not supported within their family or community sphere. The fact of welcoming, including and then supporting that person's personal growth to a slightly better spot could not be possible if that person was not Courageous enough to reach out for help. So, I applaud the fortitude and guts of the people who reach out, our Members.

Totally the reason I love the Newbie Hub! I want people who enter this website to feel welcomed and nurtured for being who they are, and supported in their quest for growth.

Such an important reflection! It indeed takes courage to reach out and ask for help when you have been turned down so many times

I love these questions and this post so much! Thank you Hopeee :) ♡ It was awesome to read through.

  1. Think of any role on 7 Cups. How does that role make a positive impact on our community or as a whole? (Example of roles, Listener, member, mentor, academy graduate, mod etc)

    - The role that comes to mind for me is quality mentor. I love being a quality mentor and I think mentoring is really important, and useful - especially in the first month of being a listener, but also throughout your listening journey. Your mentor can help you along your journey as a listener, providing support through resources, help with navigating the site, mock chats and also answer any questions you may have. When you are a new listener, the site can be hard to navigate and feel overwhelming, and it can be hard to start off listening. With a mentor by your side it makes it that bit easier, to have someone to go to, to learn and grow with. This then leads to more listeners staying on the site, after feeling supported, which impacts the community as more listeners will be available to support members - and more members will feel supported - and the community will grow <3

-A moment I felt supported/helped by someone in the community is when my mentor reached out to me to check in on me for the first time, we went through some of the questions I had about cups, and they helped me along my listening journey so much. Having a mentor there made me feel connected to the community more, and helped me to feel supported.

@Hope thanks for such an awesome post!

I always tell newer listeners and my mentees that no role is more important than others. Even though we have admin and ambassadors etc, they are not "over" anyone. They just have a specific role of managing a team. But that still requires team work and everyone to put in their fair share of effort and ideas.

Another thing I tell them is even if you don't get any other role on Cups other than a Listener, that is still a very very important role. In fact, that's where we all started! If we didn't have listeners listening to members, then none of us would have any other role! The Listener role is the glue that keeps us all together

Members are also another vital part of Cups. Again, if there were no members, none of us would be here. I so appreciate the vulnerability of every member courageously reaching out to speak about the hard situations they are facing. Every time I speak to a member, I am honored that they trust me enough to open up.

Can you share with us a moment you felt supported/were helped by someone in the community? What was their role and what did they do that made the impact? (Feel free to avoid names and specific details)

I have leadership roles in the Listener Community Discussions Team and Quality, both of which I have felt very very supported. I am thankful for the admin/ambassadors for both teams and for their dedication to helping those of us with the tasks we have to complete. I feel I can go to anyone in either of the teams and ask for support or guidance. I am never met with any judgement. Instead, things are explained clearly and usually followed up by asking if I need help with anything else.

The leaders in the teams that I am in are a great role model to me for what skills a good leader should possess and I look forward to continuing to walk in their footsteps.

@Hope love this reminder! 💕

  1. All roles are essential to the whole. However, this time, I'd like to spotlight the group leaders. The therapeutic effect of group intervention is amazing and these leaders spare their time and energy to host and provide support. Additionally, participation in group sessions builds a sense of community and camaraderie between people. So... shoutout to all Community Moderators, Support Team Leaders, Support Team Teen Stars, Room Supporters and Discussion Leaders!
  2. There are many. One of those moments was when I logged into Cups after work. My 'cup' was running low. I came to see if there was a session going on. P&G session was just started. I participated, supported others, and felt supported. My draining cup was quickly refilled. The P&G lead at that time is an outstanding example of a servant leader.
