Am I being emotionally abused?
My boyfriend and I have been in a relationship for almost 5 years, and still as recently as this morning he will find a way to lecture me about any mistake I make, big or small. I always have to apologize, and if I don’t apologize in the exact way he seems fit, he will tell me all about it. He brings a lot of old things into current disagreements, uses a lot of “you always” and “you never” statements, and has a way of making me feel like I’m impossible, and simply the worst to talk to. I’m not claiming I’m perfect, but it’s almost like he enjoys telling me what I should and shouldn’t do, and how I should or shouldn’t do it. It’s exhausting. Does anyone have any sort of experience like this? I can provide more details / examples / events because it’s gotten to the point where I write out most of our arguments for my own sanities sake. He makes me feel like I have this completely warped view of everything. Advice?
@Livejinxed
Many people feel this way and experience this ......
The Always/ NEVER and dragging up past experience or arguments ..... is a non working situation
many times a person who does that and punishes their partner for every small detail is harboring anger about something else and is picking at the edges instead of the main issue.
perhaps look at all the items going on and in my case the accusations and nitpicking was deflection of the flaws that are really happening..... many many good sites with very good relationship advice i have been listening to podcasts from one called "marriage helper "
@Livejinxed- The fact that you wonder if you are being emotionally abused is telling. Emotional abuse is subtle and insidious at it's onset. The fact you are questioning your experience is the next level called gaslighting. Your partner should be supporting you, not putting your down. Sounds like you already are aware how this has been affecting you. You might consider professional support for yourself, and the two of you as a couple. You deserve peace and comfort in your relationship.
Hi there !
Even considering you may or may not be emotionally abused speaks volume. I am so glad this platform is here for everyone to share their experiences. I have also been emotionally abused. I experienced someone telling me that my experiences weren’t valid and called me crazy constantly. I also experienced someone who wanted to know where I was at all times and when they got upset with me they would cut off communication by ignoring me as “punishment” or even making me feel as if he was cheating with someone else. This was extremely toxic for me & I felt like I couldnt be open with him or be my true self because of the fear of his retaliation, which often meant an argument where I was not heard. I hope me sharing this experience helps you or anyone reading. I also found some images that contain additional signs, i hope they are helpful and you find some light in this situation.. sending much love & light!
