Member Statuses!
Hiya, lovelies!
Me and the wonderful @EnigmaForte have decided to pair up and discuss the possible future update of members having statuses!
This feature is already available for listeners displaying as: red = offline, orange = busy and green = online.
[Note: this allows Listeners to manually choose whether they are available to talk to people in Private Messages.
If they are set to:
Online, which means that the listener is free to take General Requests which are made by clicking the Connect Now button.
Busy, which means that the listener is active, but may not be able to respond to Private Messages immediately.
Offline, which means that the listener is either not available for chats or are using their member account to seek support for themselves. ]
Some of the positives of this feature are:
~ This gives members the opportunity to let listeners know when they want to talk and need support - instead of being offered it when they are busy doing something else in the community. E.g. forum, feed or group support chats.
~ It reminds listeners of boundaries. If a member is not ready to talk about an issue, they can set their status to Offline to allow themselves a break.
This idea has been submitted to the Suggestions Box several times and wed like to hear your thoughts surrounding it! - Please remember this is a respectful discussion with the whole community, let us listen to others and put our opinions across in a kind manner.
What do you think? Let us know! We value your opinion.
Thank you for reading, we hope that you are doing well! :3

This is such a great idea! I've always wondered why the ability to change status isn't available to members as well. Every time I go on my member account it will just show that I'm online even though sometimes I don't really want anyone to know that I'm actually online because I just want to read and post things in the forums. If this feature is available for member as well it would be so helpful! :)
@blossombreathe
Hi there! So I'm actually very confused about this post. My member account already has a status feature on it (right now it's green) in the corner of my icon. So I had assumed this feature was available to members.
Members should not be expected anything from listeners. even if they are online. status for members is a bad idea because listeners will expected things from online members. its not okay.
@TortueDesBois, that is an interesting point.
@TortueDesBois
Heya!
I think that is a very interesting point to make about the member statuses. You are right that members should not have to meet up to any sort of expections, except the community guidelines! However, I believe that it would be useful for all members to let listeners know if they want to be reached out to. (with the new listeners PM'ing members option) In addition, members who have roles in the community such as forum supporter or may be holding a discussion with the Appreciation Team, will be able to set their status to offline - to make sure that they aren't disturbed! They aren't expected to respond anyway, but it is a heads up to listeners to let them know that they don't need to wait for a response.
Thank you for contributing, lovely!
@blossombreathe
Listeners already trouble to use their statut, and their statut create expectations in members (which is totally normal)
but expecting the same from members is very not nice, it will cause a lot of stress in members.
There shouls not have ANY expectation from member statut, and if we can change our statut, then there will be expectations, like the one to answer to our messages if we are online.
I should never be expectated anything, mainly not to answer timely because i am online. the statut will cause this expectation toward members
@blossombreathe oh wow I remember when we first ever talked about this kinda thing a year ago Lauren xD you complained about it then too :p cos you didn't know I knew when you were online all the time xD
@Keanan
haha yes xD I've been thinking about this for a while now, eh? @_@ I think it's a massive part of privacy for members tbh :3
@blossombreathe I think it'd just be best if it was made that members only appear online while in messages/group chats, so if they are just chilling or on the forums they won't be seen really. But you also have to think that it's helpful for some listeners too. To know when a member you wanna check up on is online can encourage you to talk to them again and see if they're alright. The whole showing if members is online has lots and lots of benefits that you have to consider with this hehe :p <3
@blossombreathe
I think it's good that members should have statuses. IMO, red doesn't always mean no messages, it means don't expect a fast relpy. Because sometimes people don't communicate in real time just through messages. Red doesn't always mean don't message because you should always feel like you could message your listener/member as long as you are respecting the boundary they told you in PM's. But I do agree members should have statuses because I've had inappropriate listeners get mad at me when I'm online and don't reply to them on my member account. Because as a member sometimes you only feel like posting feed comments, posting forum, or talking in group chats you might not feel like replying to messages on some days. The statuses would help members self care. Sometimes inexperienced teen listeners think self care is only for listeners and they don't understand that self care is for everyone. Thanks for bringing this idea up. <3<3<3
@summertimeSamness
That is quite true, Sam! I've also had cases where listeners become mad if they see you're online and you don't respond ASAP. I think this feature really helps members feel more comfortable on 7 Cups and take the pressure away from responding to messages. In addition, as you've said, it encourages both listeners and members to practice self-care! *hugs* Thanks for sharing, lovely.
I think this is something that members should be able to control. It goes beyond just messages from listeners. Many people do deal with unhealthy relationships, and the online status is one way someone can watch someone and the person being watched doesn't get any notification of that.
