The Meaning of Your Name
Names are powerful. When we are still in the womb, our parents or caregivers begin to get an idea of who we are or who we might become. They begin to imagine us. This is captured in the ritual of choosing a name.
Whenever I talk with expecting parents, I ask them about the names they are choosing between and what the names mean. I ask them about what resonates with them? I sometimes ask friends, family members, and colleagues this too. It can be an insightful process.
Thinking about our name is important. It is something that uniquely belongs to us. There is a psychological explanation of this called the "cocktail party effect" which underlines the importance of our name. We can be in a crowded and loud room. If someone 40 feet away mentions our name we immediately hear it and can focus in on what is being said. Our names are that powerful.
Names have meaning to us personally too. We can, in some ways, choose what our name means (and the same applies to those of you who have chosen your name). The brain processes over 950 billion bites/units of information a day. Proactively thinking about our name can help us with the story we tell about ourselves. Here is how you do it:
1. Write down your first, middle, and last name. (Your chosen name is good, too!)
2. Google or ask AI what each name means.
3. Organize them into a sentence or a sequence that makes the most sense to you.
4. Reflect on the meaning of your name in the past and what it means for your story going forward.
We are big on anonymity here so don't share your real name, but feel free to share the gist or the meaning of your name, what it means to you, and how it influences your sense of past and the future.
I'll start. Here are my elements or name blocks (I can rearrange them):
-a secluded narrow valley - connection to the land, peaceful
-lion strong
-navigator
Here is my meaning: I'm a strong navigator with a connection to the land that lives in a secluded valley. That actually fits! I am mostly a monk living close to nature in the trees. I work with you all to navigate the Good Ship 7 Cups (sometimes through treacherous waters).
I've probably done this exercise with a couple of dozen people. Part of it is the meaning is loose or ambiguous enough that it can be used pretty flexibly; and part of it is that it also "just fits" the person some of the time in an unexpected way.
Again, if comfortable share your reaction to this exercise in general sense. Please don't share your real name. And, thankfully, multiple names can share the same meaning, so it isn't super obvious how to decode things. Bonus points - ask your family members or friends and share what they feel/experience in the exercise.
My name means the Grace of God.
@Hannahatm13 The meaning of your name is so beautiful! 🥰
@Hannahatm13
That's beautiful 💜💕
@Heather225 Confirmation of just how remarkable of a person you are!! ♡♡
@YourCaringConfidant

you're so sweet!
@GlenM my name means anointed or Christian in faith. Neither of these things relate to me at all.
I love my name. ♡ It's means "desired for long".
@YourCaringConfidant what a beautiful meaning!
@GlenM Thank you. I think so too! The funny thing is I have a cousin named my name too, but she has an "a" in hers. I'm Desiree. Guess my mom must've liked the name a lot. 😂
@GlenM
So I broke this down in a numerological perspective, with the number 9 being my numerological number. My name (in full) means 'humanitarian', 'old soul', and 'compassionate leader'.
@ScorpiaD
Oh I absolutely love this.
Grace, calmness and natural beauty
I think I’m far from calm but I think the words are beautiful. Something to incorporate into my daily day.
@peachThinker662 what wonderful words! How can this help in daily life?
I can use them for daily affirmations to promote calm and grace
because I have so many names 😂
I won't share them, well except Anna, that is my real name.
But the rest will be a mystery.
Their meaning is in no particular order:
I do feel those fit pretty nicely, not only for my presence here on Cups,
but in life in general.
I have always worked well and been resilient under pressure, and well
you could kind of say that I thrive under it, and sometimes people feel
better just knowing I'm there, I also do know that sometimes I just need to
open up the link to dashboards for them to work 😂 same goes for tech,
well, except my internet. Maybe if it wasn't my internet, haha!
And mystery and enhancement, I uh, work in mysterious ways?
Nah, I just have tons of ideas and it's an absolute mystery of where they
come from, and then I go and make something out of them, I've created
a series or three on here and taken on fun projects that I've enhanced with
positive leadership in some ways. Which goes in to the last one, leadership
and legacy and I hope that what I do here will create a legacy of positivity
and care and last but not least, kindness.
✨💙✨
My first name means Glory to God.

That's so kind of you to say!
I'm really glad to have met you too,
your name fits you so well too and it's absolutely beautiful!
My parents both chose my names, and doing this research has
helped me learn how powerful names can be and how they affect us.
Two of those names have been in my family for a long time, the other one
was given to me by my dad. He told me a while ago that he gave me this name
because it reminded him of a person with that name which had always shown him
endless amount of kindness in his years growing up, and he felt that the name
was fitting for me. And my heart just melted when I heard that 🥹
We truly have awesome names my colorful caring twin of joy 🌈
💚 Love you too, twin 💚
