The Hidden Reason You Can’t Focus (And What to Do About It)
Hi everyone! It has been a while since I have written a post. But I recently came across a topic that I rarely see being talked about yet I see people impacted by it all the time. So here I am doing my part to raise awareness about two very important concepts that everyone should know about
- Dopamine Stacking
- Dopamine loading
What is dopamine stacking?
Dopamine stacking is when you pile up lots of exciting things at once so your brain gets a bigger rush. There are a variety of ways you can do it but I see the following becoming a staple practice:
Eating whilst watching a show.
Multitasking entertainment, like texting while watching a movie.
Scrolling through social media whilst lying in bed.
Scrolling a social media app whilst watching a show.
Cupsing whilst working/in class.
I’m not here to tell you to give up things you enjoy or to be productive all the time. The goal isn’t to remove fun from your life. I just want to help you understand why sometimes it feels impossible to focus or get things done. Being aware of dopamine stacking and learning dopamine loading may explain why your energy and motivation fluctuate and give you some tools to manage it better.
Why should we care about avoiding dopamine stacking?
Because extreme highs are almost always followed by extreme lows. When you constantly chase big dopamine hits, it becomes really hard to focus on tasks that are just moderately challenging. Difficult tasks feel impossible, motivation drops, and procrastination increases. You may feel drained, low on energy, or even irritable. Often, you turn to sugar, social media, or gaming to get that rush again, and the cycle repeats without you even noticing.
A common cycle in action:
Morning: You scroll social media while eating breakfast and listening to music. Energy spikes, you feel excited and stimulated.
Midday: Energy crashes. You feel tired, bored, or restless. Hard tasks at work or school feel overwhelming.
Afternoon: You snack on sweets or check notifications to get another boost. The high comes back, but only temporarily.
Evening: Energy drops again. You may binge-watch shows, play games, or eat more snacks to feel alive. Sleep is affected.
This loop keeps repeating. The highs feel amazing, but the lows get worse each time, making it harder to feel motivated or energized for ordinary tasks.
Most of us will not realize we are trapped in this cycle until we are pressed for time and can’t figure out why we can no longer focus on a task. You maybe a straight A student who can no longer study for a test, or someone who loved work but dreads it now.
Dopamine loading to the rescue!
Good news is that its not hopeless, its hard to get out of this cycle but not impossible! Dopamine loading means giving your brain smaller, steady boosts instead of chasing a huge rush. It is about doing simple, healthy things one at a time, like going for a walk, stretching, or finishing a small task. Each one gives you a little lift without overloading your brain.
This way your energy stays more balanced. You still feel good, but you avoid the crash that comes after stacking too many exciting things at once. Over time, your brain learns to enjoy calmer activities too, so even everyday things start to feel rewarding again.
Start smart, not easy
You don’t want to begin the day with easy dopamine highs. For very difficult or important days, hold off on highly stimulating activities until after you complete your hardest tasks. For example, if you are studying for an important exam, avoid a carb-heavy indulgent meal like cake or binge-watching videos before your study is done. These easy dopamine hits can make it harder to focus and reduce motivation for the tough work.
Use dopamine stacking strategically
If you must do dopamine stacking, save it for after you have finished everything you want to achieve that day. For example, having dinner while watching your favorite show at the end of a productive day is fine, but doing that at breakfast can make it much harder to focus on the day’s important tasks. You can also use stacking in a controlled way by combining small, healthy activities that complement each other, like walking while reviewing flashcards. This gives a bigger but safe dopamine boost to make hard work more manageable.
Daily steps for dopamine loading
Start the day with calm, simple activities like stretching, journaling, or a short walk.
Focus on one challenging task at a time before rewarding yourself.
Take mindful breaks away from screens to refresh your brain.
Use small, healthy rewards after completing tasks.
Space out stimulating activities rather than stacking them all at once.
End the day with quiet activities to let your brain wind down.
By combining dopamine loading with strategic dopamine stacking at the right time, you can get energy boosts when needed while keeping motivation and focus steady throughout the day.
How to see the full potential of dopamine loading?
This is not necessary but if you are really in need of a productive week or a day then here is how you utilize it to the max. The golden rule: No dopamine stacking or high dopamine activities before all your work is done. This looks like no social media, no energy drinks/coffee, no very tasty carb meals. Some of you may have tried a low carb diet and felt amazing, it could have been dopamine loading in action. You can of course eat but choose nutrious meals over yummy meals. You basically make your brain work for its dopamine and end the day with an intentional dopamine high as a reward. But as you would be sleeping in sometime after this reward, the low won't be an issue.
Let's practice!
Give yourself 3 days! For the next 3 days:
- Pick one dopamine stacking activity you do a lot. Write down exactly how you will avoid it for the next 3 days. Be specific, don’t just say “avoid it,” say what you will do instead.
- For the next 3 days, when you wake up. Clear your schedule of any dopamine highs! Schedule the most difficult tasks first. For example, no phone, go do your workout. Or get started on your school project.
- Comment today with your plan and check back in 3 days, regardless of whether you succeeded or not. You can keep coming back every 3 days until you get it right!
@Hope thank you for this very informative post!
@Hope
Thank you for sharing this. Super useful at the start of yet another semester of uni. Easy to get off track with bad habits from vacation lol
@Hope I'm going to do this starting tomorrow morning. I have started the bad habit of legitimately checking something I need, but going the down the rabbit hole only to find two hours of useless scrolling has passed.
@junketyjunk
oh me too, I completely relate. I will commit to this as well - we can cheer each other on!
1) I'm really behind on everything, for next 3 days, I'll avoid scrolling youtube and cupsing... I get distracted very easily... I'll study instead, watch lectures, I'll sleep early... I haven't been sleeping at nights. I'll try to change this pattern.
2) I'll avoid phone/ scrolling after waking up , avoid cupsing , binge eating , I will focus on studys instead.
3) 25/09/2025
1) It didn't go well, youtube being a big distraction, patterns being repeated and I slept very late, I reduced time on cups, but still was checking in frequently... my triggers are also an issue.
2) Avoid scrolling, sleep before 2am, wake up early , remove all the triggers and focus on studies.
3) 28/09/2025
@Hope praise goes to the auther for giving us the most crucial post about mental health. It's really very true that dopamine management is so much important in managing out daily works and activities . Keeping a balanced dopamine levels also keeps us away from lot of mental health sufferings like untimely mood swings that leads to mental health disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorders etc. It also helps to thrive in social activities. Thank you very much for this lesson from the most honored and wise person for concerning and helping us to increase our focus and develop our mental health. Thank you !
This is me. 100%. But even before reading this, I’ve been adding walks and turning off the PlayStation earlier than before. Letting my brain have moments away from the screen.
Now to start doing it consciously.
Just Do It!

@Hope Thank you. This was surely posted on time, as I was struggling with mid-day distractions, especially scrolling on my phone. I have noticed that I grow impatient sometimes. I am planning to go for a walk instead, as working from home can definitely put you in a comfort zone, and it becomes difficult to come out of it.
@Hope
Ooph, this is SO relevant these days. I've been struggling to get schoolwork done as I find it so hard to focus. Thank you for these tips! I'll have to think about how to re-structure my life so I don't start my day with a dopamine rush (breakfast and a show). Thank you!
@Hope Thank you so much for the post. Very relatable and helpful.
I have screwed up a lot of things. mostly studying
I wait for perfection and end up doing nothing and avoiding tasks. I go scroll on social media, or just talk to someone about a totally non important topic.
I will not go on social media in the morning and limit time on 7 cups. I will go outside, be present . I will start studying , not aiming for perfection and won't get distracted when i feel unnecessary thoughts.
I will eat without using my device. And avoid high dopamine levels which makes it impossible to study
