Problem Solving
We've been co-creating a culture here together.I understand culture as the joint ideas we embrace and act out in our community. You can read our valueshere. We've also recently added an emphasis on being welcoming and encouraging.I'd like to introduce another variable today that I think is important:problem solving.
We are building the emotional support system for the Internet. This is an incredibly challenging undertaking.I tell our team regularly that building 7 Cups is like putting a puzzle together with a million pieces. To be honest, it is actually even more challenging that that. A better metaphor might be that it is a giant maze of mazes. It is pitch black. We can't really see. We are feeling our way across the walls and every so often we find an opening and we walk through it. We shout to the others nearby that we found an opening. They join us, walk down the hallway, and then we spread out again trying to find the next opening. Each opening and hallway we go down brings us closer to building the global social safety net that is 7 Cups of Tea.
My goal is to empower those all around me to be problem solvers. The more problems we solve the more progress we make. The more progress we make the more people we help. The more people we help the greater our momentum. It is a virtuous circle.
What I'd like to do in our community is to invite you all to become problem solvers along with me. This maze of mazes that we are trying to figure out can't be done by one person, or even 10, it can only be accomplished by many people working together. We've already seen this work in our community. For example, when we started the forum I had no idea it was going to be as helpful as it has become (this was an opening in the maze that we walked down). Then, I didn't realize that you all would start making suggestions on how to make the site better (that was another door we walked down). We've incorporated - and will incorporate - much of what you share with us. This lets us walk down more and more openings and get closer to our goal.
There really isn't anything mysterious about problem solving. Let me briefly outline how it works:
1.Identify the problemas specifically as you can.
2.Create the goal- this is almost always the opposite of the problem.
3.Come up with a potential solutionto the problem.
4.Try the solution.Did it work? If yes, fantastic! Keep doing it. If it didn't work, try another solution. Did that work? If no, try another. Just keep trying solutions until you find one that works.
Here is an example from our recent past:
1.Problem: New Listeners do not feel welcome.
2.Goal:New Listeners feel welcome.
3.Potential Solutions:
-send genuine welcoming messages to new listeners
-welcome new listeners in the chat room
-welcome new listeners on the forum
4.Did it work?Yes, it is working, but we can do more here. We are adding new solutions to get better at this. We'll keep doing what works, but we'll also add more things to make it better.
I wasn't even aware that some new listeners were not feeling welcome before. This was really surprising to me, especially because we are such a warm community. It isn't that any of us were being purposefullyun-welcoming. We had just assumed that it was happening. Then, when we realized we were not, we took deliberate steps to be more welcoming, b/c that is the type of community we are; we are a welcoming community! With problem solving it really helps if you can clearly outline the problem and then outline specific ways you are going to try to solve the problem.
Let me share another a problem we haven't yet solved:
1.Problem:There are lots of people struggling around us. 30-40% of the people that we know struggle and don't really want anyone to know they are struggling. They need help. We, at 7 cups, can give them the help they need.
2.Goal:The 30-40% of people that are quietly struggling around us learn about 7 cupsand use the servicetofeel better.
3.Solution: We haven't really figured out a good solution to this quite yet. Let's work together to problem solve this.
4. After we get our potential solutions together. Let's test them and see if they work. We can probably come up with 4-5 things that really work well. We can then start doing those things deliberately to help more people.
You can see from the above outline and example that problem solving is fairly easy to implement, especially if we are working together. One last point: fear of failure.
>Failure- often times we are afraid to try things because we are afraid of failure. We somehow believe that successful people just come up with great ideas and then drop them into existence. This NEVER happens. Things that work work because someone has failed about a thousand times in figuring out how to make them work. We are no different. We are going to fail a lot. That is good! Failure is good, b/c it means we are trying and making progress. There is a famous Thomas Edison quote about not failing a 100x, but, rather, learning 100xhow to not do it. We need to have this same mindset.I fail all the time.I've failed or made 100's of mistakes with 7 cups alone. I keep failing and making mistakes. This is good though, because this is how I learn. Please hear me that I welcome failure, b/c that is going to be how we learn.
>>No permission needed- We want you all to feel free to experiment and problem solve as outlined above. If you see a problem, then post it here in this thread and share how you are going to try to solve it.
In closing, I'd like us to officially incorporate problem solving into our culture. We are already doing it - which is the main reason why we have grown so much - but we can do it in a more deliberate manner. Thank you to all of you for helping us walk through this maze. We are doing it by solving one problem at a time. Onward and upward!
Problem solving is something we all do in our lives constantly. When it comes to 7 Cups of Tea, we all can be part of figuring out the problem and experimenting with solutions. We are all part of a big team! I am certain that combining all of our brain power will help us solve many problems and continue to make 7 Cups amazing! I am excited to hear from everyone and collaborate together.
Lets get started!
As a part of facilitating the collaborative problem solving process, we invite the community to share theri feedback, comments, suggestions through the following channels-
1- Support forum
2- Chatroom
3- Email (community@)
4- Personal messages
5- Suggestion box
Please be candid, there are no wrong answers on the path to success:)
1.Problem:There are lots of people struggling around us. 30-40% of the people that we know struggle and don't really want anyone to know they are struggling. They need help. We, at 7 cups, can give them the help they need.
SOLUTION: This can only be done by one thing... making them aware that there is a "7cupsoftea" org, which can help them with their problems... and that too, with full discretion...
Our biggest help will be Social networking sites, we need to make sure, that everyone who wants a listener, knows about this site... I have seen your twitter account... We need to work a lot on that... You are mainly a tumblrbased site... we need to hit twitter, facebook, linkedin.. anything and everything which will make these people aware about this site... so that if they are in trouble... they know where to come to...
this is just a suggestion :)
Abhinav, I completely agree! We've done some work in these spaces - we have a twitter account, FB page, tumblr etc., but I think you are right that our efforts could really be multiplied. What would you all recommend here? How could other listeners message to people that we are here to help? What would that message look like?
Need to talk? Or want to be a listening ear? Either way - check out www.7cups.com.
We've done some testing on our home site and the language there seems to work well. People seem responsive to it and dont' find it threatening.
Would love feedback here! Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and helping us solve this problem ; )
Yes! thatsreally seems like a nice way forward :)
i will try to come up with more friendly and innovative ideas :)
Glen i think i might have misunderstood your starter postand thus my reply above might notbe applicable.
Love, love this post, Glen! Thank you for adding it. :)
Advertising is always a good start. I don't know how we would do that or where, but perhaps Google would host an ad through Google Adwords. Facebook, Tumblr, and Twitter all offer advertising too.I am not sure if 7 Cups has the resources to start a campaign because it can get expensive or if this has already been done. What do you think about this?
TWITTER! If 7cups starts following teens/adults who need help example of a twiiter account may be @depressedteen or @pleasehelpme we will start to get known in the twitter mental health community and once we known in there community they will start tweeting about us and then retweerts will happen! we need to get more well known in the other online chat mental health chat rooms. One last idea I have is partnering up with big websites, if the bigger people know us they will start spreading the word. Have we considered blah therapy?
I see some super exciting responses coming through! THANK YOU!
Social Media is by far the best organic advertising and the it's totally available to us. We could do more on Twitter pretty easily. If you happen to have suggestions of the best methods, I will try some! Kristy my Handle is @Sheila_7cups - as to be clear where I am from. I do see the value in what you are saying. We should think a bit more on this.
Things like training and quality are super important as well. Please share all of the ideas you can with us. I have always said I LOVE feedback, and I do. We all love it. I know you all may worry about hurting our feelings sometimes; it is how we grow! I assure you!
I look forward to following this thread. Looks like we will have a lot of great ideas popping up to help us Problem Solve.
Thank you all! Oh yeah..... YOU ROCK!
hello! i would really like to work along in developing the twitter and facebook pages :)... if given the opprtunity :)
Facebook.
I use it for my business and it is a great way to get word of mouth out there. The key to it is original content though. The way the page is set up now is pretty informative, but very impersonal.
Posting content that people want to share is so important and can reach a huge audience. And people love to share memes or inspirational posts. Things they relate to, then their friends see it and share it, and even check out the page. BLAMO you are reaching part of that 30-40% of people that need help and now know where to find it.
You can get content creators by getting listeners to volunteer to be admin of the page and have a constant flow of inspirational and informative content for likers to share. (you can restrict their roles on the page as well).
and that is just my humble 2 cents, I also volunteer to help with content if you choose to go this route. xx
thats a great idea, I have not thought of that!
Great ideas! We do have a Pintrest account with many Memes I beleive. We can always use those one multiple sites! However, I think that it would be great to have Listeners submit Memes - I really like this! We can approve them and then populate Facebook/twitter with them.
How would you orginize the submission of Memes, Chandra? I'd love feedback on this particular idea.
Also if we could post those memes on Instagram! That way we also getting Instagram moving!
We would need a place to post them, we could link to them here, and then whomever posts them on Pinterest (love that idea too!) or Facebook can just save and share. Or create a listener group on facebook where we only post memes we want to submit.
Kind of like this:
great idea!
ChandraS, I'd welcome your help here! Can you email laura@7cups.com so we can get you plugged in? Also, are you a part of the growth team?
I'm sorry I am just now checking this thread!
I emailed Laura and I am not a part of the growth team. I actually have only been on the site about a week but would love to be part of it!
Another aspect of this is, i.e. convincing those (a section of that 30-40%) that talk therapy are going to make them feel better, is that some arejust so overwhelmed with material problems that they don?t have much faith in the healing power of words or at least the role it can play in managing their emotions.
Additionally, do those people really perceive us as genuinely caring? We might say "I am sorry", "I am sad to hear that". But what does that do to my problems? And I am a stranger; does he/she really mean it? So in our mostly impersonal world some people need some convincing that there are people out there, strangers they don?t even know, that does really care about them.
In other words, finding solutions on how we can make them aware of usis only one aspect of the problem. The other one is perception and mindsets.
Yes, I agree here. I like to conceptuzlize problems into 2 circles. one circle is things i can control and the other circle is things I can't control. The good news for us is that there are plenty of people that need support and believe that talking to someone helps. If we focus on this group - and it is huge - we should be able to do lots of good!
