Problem: Welcoming New Users in Chat Rooms

Hey, I wanted to share with you a problem that we're trying to solve and a solution we'd like to try. Have a read through it and share your feedback!

Problem: New listeners and members entering group chat rooms don't always feel acknowledged or welcomed. They can find it difficult to get involved in the conversation and leave feeling unsupported.

Goals:
- Better identify new users in chat rooms quickly and easily.
- Ensure that new users feel welcomed and invited to participate in the conversation.

Solution: Make the Newbie badge appear in chat rooms, so that as a community we can quickly identify new users and make sure they get the welcome they deserve!

Share thoughts and feedback below!

@Heather

Cool idea! This would help everyone know who the newbies are and make sure they get a warm welcome!!!

Would this be in the forums too!?

@Laura

I'd love to see that in the forums too, so great to know when we have new people who just started on 7 cups engaged in the forums!

@LilaGrace

i can relate to feeling like i'm eavesdropping. smiley not that it's entirely wrong to just read ongoing conversations (and yes, sometimes a lot of different ones within a chatroom, quite confusing really). right now, i do click on individual member/listener level profile always, because i feel that if they've been around for long then they know each other already quite well and i sometimes hesitate on joining in their conversation.

Heather, that is a super idea. It makes new listeners feel more part of the team.

I know that it doesn't always show when users enter the room, I know when user names pop up as ....entered the room, it definitely makes it easier to acknowledge and welcome them.
I think we as users (both members and listeners), especially ones that have been here awhile, need to make sure we are taking time to welcome each person into the chat as they join, whether it's someone we know or not.
It's so awesome and incredible the friendships that form here at 7cups, but it's unfortunate that at times the group chats seem cliquey to others that are maybe new, or don't spend as much time in the group support rooms. As great as the friendships are that we are making with one another, we need to also remember that this is a community created for support, so let's remember to support each other...and that means EVERYONE laugh not just the people you know. I think a "Hi...." is great, and acknowledges the user that entered, but I'd encourage people to take the next step as well and engage them in conversation as well, which will hopefully help them feel more comfortable in the group support chat and put them a bit more at ease. Whether it be, "How's your day going? How did you come across 7cups? We're just talking about....what do you think about...? etc..."
Let's all work together to welcome and support everyone we cross paths with here. You never know what a little hello, short conversation, listening ear, or encouraging words might mean for someone. heart

@Moj I responded before I read your reply, but this is very similar to my line of thinking.

@Heather

I think this would be a wonderful idea, for listeners AND members. Both groups, when it's a newcomer, deserve welcome and respect, and not impatience if they ask a question that those of longer standing know
