Ability to Feature 2 Types of Threads in Sub-communities - Options & Ideas!

Hi All -

You have been asking for a while for us to add a 2nd featured thread to our sub-communities! This would allow leaders to feature both a check-in thread and a second thread on a topic relevant to the community. We have been working with our site designer to come up with options on how this could work and what it would look like. Below you will see 2 possible options! Take a look :)

This post is written in collaboration with @krinkthemellowunicorn who took the lead in communicating this idea to our designer and getting these options created!

Option 1 - Check-in located within the cover picture for easy access. Once you have joined a community, the subscribe/join option was disappear and the check-in button would be the only one that displays.

The 2nd featured thread would appear in the usual position.

Option 2 - Checkin would appear on the right side bar. There would be a drop down option that would allow you to navigate to check-ins from recent days. The second featured thread would appear in the usual position

We would need an easy way for threads to be classified as a check-in or a featured thread. Our idea would be to add a selection option to the star icon that would look like this:

Please take some time to review the ideas above and share your thoughts. Please note - the goal of this project is to make the existing behavior of checkins easier to use and do. We need to work within workable parameters of the ideas presented or what we are currently doing.

Additionally - right now we send a notification to all subscribers when a new thread is featured. In this set up, we need to decide if notifications should be sent for both types of featured threads?

Thank you all for your ideas. We are excited to bring this option to our community pages!

@Laura I love the idea! And we were talking about this so so much and we were asking to make it happen for so long so it is so awesome to see it finally in a progress cheeky

Talking about the options, I personally like 1st idea more because it is more easy to notice. I know that lots of people are struggling to find things that are putted in our top bars so I want to reduce the number of the information that is there. So 1st option sounds like a great way to do it yes

@Laura

If these are the only two options being given, I personally would prefer OPTION #1..... I feel it gives a better detail and is more easily noticeable than the 2nd option that is given. I am also split on weather to feature "both" threads since we already have so many notifications to go through... however, at the same time featuring "both" does alert the community as a whole as well... I'm sure my decision may become more clear on that once I have more time to think it through better.

Hi @Laura ... I do like Option 1, it is easier to find the most recent check in, seems more user friendly. question tho, will it be user specific, meaning, if you've checked it that week will that option disappear until the next week's check in? I'll go back and read the post in case i missed it. But definitely Option 1 for me.

@Keola

Thats actually a really good question!... I didn't think of it that way (on how long would it last) etc... hopefully that question will be answered!

Personally , I find OPTION 1 to be a better choice..so I am going to vote for it .

@Laura

I think both layout options would work well, although the one with the check-in thread on the right side would perhaps be more useful because it shows the past couple of days' check-in threads in a drop-down menu. However, if the check-in is at the top, it is easier to find.

I don't really mind whether I'm sent a notification for both featured threads or not. It's nice to have a reminder, but it doesn't matter to me too much either way, as long as they are easy to find. smiley

Option 1 is prettier and more straightforward! It also doesn't push important info out of the way.

I agree that option 1 sounds really user friendly and doesn't "clutter up" the screen too much.
In rgards to the notification being sent for both fetaured threads, I don;t think that's necessary. There's enough stuff in our alerts as it stands!
Thanks for helping make this a reality @Laura.

I like the 2nd option

I prefer the first one! However, there shoud be an ability to edit the word "daily" to "weekly," (or monthly, or no option since some sub-communities may not partcipate in check-in's) since some sub-communities chose to have weekly check-in's rather than daily so it's less forum clutter

@Emily619

Oh so true~.. I didn't even think of that! Thats an excellent point... as How Healthy Living only does this weekly in my subcommunity.
