Member Email Verification for Group Support Rooms
I'm excited to announce that we will be rolling out the member email verification update to all group support rooms! Check out Laura's original post about this for more information on what we mean by verified email. The update has already been live for forum and seems to be working well, so I'm looking forward to seeing how this impacts the rooms.
Meaning, anyone who enters the group support rooms must have a verified email address. This update is currently in development and I will let you know as soon as I have more information regarding timeline.
I'm hopeful that this update will continue to increase accountability and overall safety in the rooms.
Subscribe to this thread and stay tuned for updates!
Very excited to see this update! I hope the rooms continue to be safe and supportive places on 7 Cups!
@Laura How do I verify? I'm not sure what to do.
@HopeFloats91 It's not live for the rooms just yet! Will update soon!
@Kate Thank you! My picture won't update in settings, and someone suggested I may not have verified my email or something.

@Kate Thank you! I myself have had alot of terrible cases of people disrespecting mods and others... Which should never be happening in a mental health support room! However... Still alot Of long time members I know like to cause ruckus! Hopefully I can attend the next mod meeting, I have a questions concearning someone getting muted, or even permanently blocked, and In the case that did occur, can their IP address also be permanently blocked? I've had alot of members ask me about this, as most just make new accounts...
An IP address is usually shared by many people, so if you block it, you block all of them. For example, you might end up blocking an entire family, an entire office, or an entire college building.
Also, an IP address is usually reallocated randomly from time to time, often every 24 hours, so a permanent block would affect different random groups of people each day.
Also, a baddie can easily and almost instantly connect using a different IP address, so the only people blocked would be innocent people.
For these reasons, IP blocking of end users is hardly ever useful.
@MissMeghan
@RarelyCharlie My pologies for my late reply, and thank you Charlie!
Yes, that is Very true that some IPs are connected to entire buildings, hmmm, So I think It just boils down to finding a safe way to block certain members, without, yes, ending up blocking entire buildings!!
@Kate
Awesome! Hopefully we will stop seeing people bypassing mutes and making new accs in just minutes
Unfortunately that is not very likely, because anyone can easily "verify" many fake addresses. In fact, on my member account 7 Cups refused to verify my real address and only accepted a fake one.
The problem is that the verification e-mail can be forwarded to a different address where it still works. It doesn't check that the mailbox where the button is clicked has the same address as the one the e-mail was sent to. This makes it almost useless (as our forum spammers quickly discovered).
@SmileyPower
@RarelyCharlie I had the same issue, except reverse the member with listener account.
This app has great intentions, but still a ways to go before Ill even give it a rating.
Thanks for the update, Kate! :)
@Kate
wootwoot Kate so loving the improvements on this!!!!
YOU ROCK

Yay! I'm so excited for this update! Thanks for all your hard work! @Kate
Step by step to secure 7cups.
I'm so glad about this update! I hope that people who tend to use fake emails just to create new accounts to bypass mutes and suspensions as well as to do the act of trolling will be alleviated.
It might give us a break, then it will start again when bypassing technics have been discovered.
I'm worried of the day someone concludes this site shouldn't be used anonymously.
