October 10/12: Discussion Annoucement Feature
Hello community!
In our continued effort to encourage and support discussions in our chatrooms, we will be launching a discussion Announcement Feature. This feature will be used to announce discussions and encourage them to continue to happen by giving more resources to our amazing team of discussion leaders!
Here is how it will work!
Every listener with a discussion leader badge (group mod badge, chatroom mentor badge & guest host badge) sees a Start discussion button in the chatrooms.
When this button is clicked:
1- a pop up appears with their pre-filled name and they enter the topic
2- an optional box to enter the name of the co-leader
3- All participants see the topic and leader name in a banner which appears in the chatroom for all to see
4- the button changes to end discussion

Sounds like really good news for everything else because it will make it easier for the leaders/hosts of the discussion when new people come into the room.

Will this pop up be in all discussions rooms? Like in the guided discussion room as well? I know there is always a discussion there otherwise the room wouldn't be visible.
This sounds like a great idea, don't get me wrong.. I'm a little bit not on the yay side with this, though. Here's why:
--It will be more difficult for someone who has not ever lead a discussion, to lead one--
--It will make discussions less meaningful in a way--
To expand on that one, I mean that discussions will become more common, and they won't be as special
--It may encourage trolls--
Again, to expand on this one, people may urge to get a badge needed to have access to the button, and just troll with their discussion
--People will want access to the button ASAP, making them want the badge as quickly as possible--
I know that goes along with my last point, but still
--May have Listeners that do not have access to the button feel non-important--
.....But on the bright side!
--Discussions will be easier to lead--
--A new feature is usually always good--
--No planning required--
Although that one can be a bit bad, as trolls may be a result

Hi, Emily! There is no change in the way that people can get badges here. You still need to go six months without any behavior issues, pass the Mod application, among other requirements to get the badge. In addition, the amount of discussions taking place is going to be the same. This will just make it more organized to hold one.
