Impact of food on the brain

Pasta, pizza and desserts are the favorite foods of many people. I believe that consuming them as a treat is okay once in a while provided one does not have any dietary restrictions. However, eating too much of it can lead to a sugar crash (sudden drop in energy levels after consuming a large amount of carbohydrates). You might feel tired, irritable or even anxious without knowing the reason - it can be due to the high amount of carbohydrates you ate.

But there is more!

Eating a poor quality diet might lead to brain changes that are associated with depression and anxiety.

Seeking Help

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

@amiablePeace77 What does a healthy diet look like to you? Vegetables and lean meats and grains

How would you describe your diet? Fairly healthy lol. Right now the sugar and snap peas are being picked. They make a good snack while the others are being picked. 😁 I'm not a big fan of pasta tbh. Pizza 😋 could probably be an every day meal but it's limited to to no more than once a month. I'm not big on cake. Cookies can be a problem if they're in the house. The same with candy. I've developed a wicked sweet tooth

@mytwistedsoul

Tbh I think most of us have that "Wicked" sweet tooth 😀 - save the dried figs and apricots from me! lol

Nice though that you're following a healthy diet in general and sugar/snap peas can both be awesome snacks for sure - yummy!

Good that you take care of your weight so it does not go too low or too high. I think eating high quality food (food that actually nourishes our body and mind) can make sure we get all we need with smaller amounts.

That's food for thought!!

For starters, a healthy diet is out of reach for a lot of people who live too far away to have choices. If you live close to a variety of food markets with prices you can afford, you are among the lucky ones. You may also live in a country where prepared food ingredients are not the healthiest. Natural food stuff is expensive generally and not always as natural as claimed. Some of us have the space, money, knowledge and time to take care of a vegetable garden or even raising animals for your own consumption... but this is a rare privilege, being that most of us live in cities.

1) What does a healthy diet look like to you?

2)How would you describe your diet?

1) Homemade regular meals, a well-organized pantry and fridge, buying food in season, different main course everyday, planning menus a week ahead of time.... I am old enough to have known a time when there were "helpers" at home and nothing would go to waste, not even the kitchen scraps.

2) Well, at least I eat a lot of local cheeses, vegetables, walnuts and fruits, but do not know what "regular meals" are any longer since I live alone. A real meal is when my son is around - he likes to cook. Otherwise, I eat open sandwiches (on French traditional bread with butter often), a home-made salad made up of diced raw veggies and legumes which can last a few days. I have a taste for bitter herbs and lettuces as well. I avoid stuff that is too sugary because it gives me reflux. My weight is stable and BMI around 20.  I ought to point out that I live in a hyper-rural area, so some food is actually free (game and river fish, for instance), I have an herb garden and all kinds of arrangements with my neighbours friends in the area. Desserts are few, because I am unable to stop once I have a pavlova or anything creamy.

@Fradiga my grandmotjher used to feed the scraps after dinner to the chickens. They loved leftovers! lol

Since we have chicken, yes, we do the same thing with SOME of the scrap, but otherwise it's the compost bin

@CreativeKombucha

Nice that you have a healthy breakfast as often as possible along with fruit! With today's prices it can be harder to keep a healthy diet so I try to find things with are usually lower in price and very versatile to use like chick peas (garbanzo beans) or any kind of beans, pumpkin etc. It can help to check around what is acceptable in price and still healthy.

What does a healthy diet look like to you?

I'd say it would be a diet that you're willing to maintain regularly and not feel pressure or shame to implement in your meals. it's also a diet that gives you gradual results, such as losing a few pounds over time and general health improvements, reminding you to take care of yourself on a daily basis.

How would you describe your diet?

I'm not on a diet, at the moment, but I try to make sure not to overeat or consume too many sugary foods or meals. Sometimes I stress eat via binge eating, but slowing down and eating only when I'm hungry helps to maintain my weight. As well, eating fermented food like kimchi, sauerkraut, and natto greatly reduces bloating for me.

@PurpleHearts7

Good that you are mindful with what you eat! Fermented food is usually good for most people and helps with the healthy gut bacteria. Stress eating (emotional eating) can be a problem for many, glad you're taking care of it. When I feel stressed and have the great desire to eat something I have a carrot or an apple.
