Staying present Part 4 of 4 Urge Surfing
When you live in the moment, you are fully present and aware of the emotions and thoughts that you have right now. However, staying present is not always easy for us and there are many reasons why we find it difficult to stay in the now.
It's easy for us to get caught up in our thoughts about the past or the future. Our minds wander, and we often catch ourselves thinking about other things. If we're not careful, these daydreams can quickly turn into worries and catastrophizing and create unhealthy urges and cravings. The result could be that we find ourselves in crisis.

Thankyou for the useful resources, Ami!
What do you think people could do to help themselves when they feel an urge is coming on?/ What helps you?
I find it helpful to let the urge pass on its own, its not easy but sometimes using some distraction and keeping busy can be helpful to divert your thoughts, I feel!
Just need to hold on tight to whatever that helps you float through the situation, till the urge passes!
Using our senses can be helpful in grounding ourselves when the panic before a stronger urge hits, hot/ cold shower or a splash of water, rubbing an ice cube, listening music, scribbling on a notepad, hugging/ holding a pillow/ plushie etc!
Excellent information here, so thank you for introducing me to it.
With all due respect, it takes time and coming to terms with what happened in order to heal. For me, going into those thoughts about the past is what helps in sorting them out, understanding what happened, and learning from my mistakes. If I were to push those thoughts down, they would stay inside my head, swirling around. We grieve for whatever it was we lost. We must go through the five stages of grief to get to acceptance. Anger, one of those stages, turned inward becomes depression. We need to think and to talk it out, thus 7 Cups is so helpful. The degree of time we spend in our dark place makes the difference. I go there when my mind needs to, I spend about 20 minutes in that tunnel and then come out on the other side where the light off day has been waiting. Getting back to our balance is when living in the present is optimal. Just my thoughts that have worked for me.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I agree with you about sorting our thoughts out and understanding them. This is essential to make a foundation for healing as it is essential to learn to deal with the associated urges and mental loops so that we do not add more suffering to what we have already.
